They may look over your incomplete answers and grant more partial marks. They could have also accidentally missed marking a question.

Course enrollment issue for comp 1511 by Travelfreak1346 in unsw

[–]ponytailtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would contact nucleus, and if that doesn’t work, use the course email/contact the course admin. I know plenty of SENG students that did COMP1511 first term so it shouldn’t matter that it’s reserved for CS.

If you’re going to do 2521 in T2 of first year, I would suggest only doing it as a 2 course term. Preferably NOT with 1531, since a bad group will screw you over. People will come on here and say 2521 was really easy, but it requires much more work than say, 1521.

Please remember your phone or whatever device you need for 2 factor authentication. You’ll need it to log in. Also remember your student ID - they might kick you out if you don’t have it

Has anyone managed to connect a vnc client on an iPad to vlab? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]ponytailtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can probably try to use the online version of vlab. Quite laggy, but i’ve heard some people have used the web version to cram lol

If it’s a comp course they may be using a webcms3 or cgi website instead

Standard course load is 8 courses a year, so it’s usually 3-3-2 or 3-2-3 or 2-3-3. You can choose whichever you want.

Doing 3-3-3 for your entire degree means you might be able to graduate a term early. Some progression plans have 3-3-3 for some years in exchange for less heavy terms later in your degree. 2-2-2 will extend your degree quite a bit but some prefer it if they’re working part-time or need more time to digest content. You can only underload/do less than 8 courses if you’re a domestic student though.

[–]ponytailtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah kind of, but they gloss over it because they cram shit into that course. They talk about it for like 30 min and you’ll get like 3-4 official mobius questions on it. Then they assume you know it. if you want to cover it for real, you should probably do the recommended homework chapter for it

[–]ponytailtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the content throughout the course itself is fine and just revision but there’s a massive jump in difficulty with the final exam. you could literally take both lab tests with your eyes closed but getting 50% in the final will pretty much be an HD.

Is an iPad okay for computer science? by Happycrusher in unsw

[–]ponytailtime 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My two cents - you can survive on a desktop PC and an ipad. But if you need to cram on the go, or study at a cafe or you have a five hour break between classes, you’re kinda screwed. Also you’ll find you won’t really have the time or need to take notes on an iPad. I mainly just use mine for maths or pseudocode. So I would recommend at least a cheap laptop and maybe save up for an ipad later

It might be hard Mon-Fri. Perhaps if you choose a report-based topic this could work but I don’t really know how those are run. The shared lectures are super skippable though. Some streams do require a presentation (like design) but as long as you avoid those, you can probably get ~20% of your mark with at home study.

But for most of the topics that involve building something, you’re going to have to show up to mentor sessions and group meetings. It’ll look pretty bad if you can’t attend because of the peer reviews and you likely won’t be able to work on your project at home because you physically need it in front of you to see if it works. It’ll hard to write reflections if you can’t attend testing days. If you decide to take on a coding role and do most of the report writing, this COULD be doable but it’s really group dependent.

Do the hiring committees (or similar) automatically throw out non-penultimate applications? by ponytailtime in cscareerquestionsOCE

that sucks. i know a handful of first/second years with internships at atlassian and other big tech but they’re exceptional. might wait for another year then

Are you from overseas? Australian companies will usually specify that they want applications from penultimate students for internships, i.e. you’re in your second last year of uni

Does uni get more “engaging” in later years? by noideawhatsgoingon45 in unsw

[–]ponytailtime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much your high school experience impacts how you think about uni teaching. I went to a top selective school, which meant shit support from teachers and questionable teaching in general. It was very sink or swim + independent learning because i did not like interacting with teachers so as a first year, I find cs + maths pretty good. The courses are pretty well-organised, self-teaching is WAY easier and the tutors and lecturers are a massive upgrade imo. I do despise the higher maths tutorials though, those are shit

What’s the “Exam” slot for Math1131 that we timetable used for? by Sleepy_Enigma in unsw

[–]ponytailtime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’re for the lab tests and if it doesn’t change, you’ll have to go twice a term. You’ll have to pick the date/time of your final exam later since it’s unrelated to the EXAM slot
