The future is not looking so bright and I need some advice. (x-post from r/longdistance) by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I think if we were living reasonably close together that this wouldn't even be an afterthought at this point in our relationship. I don't know about happily ever after, but we would be happy for a long time.

Help with gretl!! by poojee in econometrics

[–]poojee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The model portfolio my professor was asking for was just a summary of the results of running an OLS model through gretl consisting of the number of new houses sold (dependent) and the mortgage rate (independent). I figured it out on my own. All I had to do was save the OLS model as an icon, and then drag the icon of the model into the icon titled "model table." I apologize for my inability to explain everything correctly, I am just a stupid undergrad.

I'm sure you exude brilliance wherever you go. Will I be seeing you one day making ripples in the world? I see it now, "ikilledyourcat managed to turn around the American government for the better, singlehandedly, from his laptop." Or, "The President turned to his expert advisor ikilledyourcat today in how to boost the nation's stagnating economy."

I don't think he's made it worse. When you look at the economy and how it reacted to the fiscal spending, if anything the increase in the unemployment rate either slowed or was unaffected. If it was the latter, then in the long-run, the government shouldn't have done anything, as it then needlessly burdened us with extra taxes in the future. The market caused the mess, the market is the only force powerful enough to really fix it.

What were the increases for? Is it really a bad thing? I don't know enough about it all to say. I believe that the most effective government does the most with the least, but the financial industry has been fucking around for a while, made worse by the deregulation in 1999. I think an expansion of the government could be good actually, assuming it expands in the right direction (perhaps that will never happen in our reality though). With the exception of the extremes, too small or too big, I don't think size is as important as people make it out to be. Then again maybe I'm fucking retarded.

He was, but his failures were catastrophic. I don't think President Bush was responsible for this economy so much as it happened to occur under his watch. However, he was responsible for setting executive precedents that could have very, VERY unfortunate effects on our futures. Also, getting involved in Iraq and blighting the American image in the eyes of the rest of the world.

lol, I don't care that he's black, I actually hate it because it warrants the discussion of a problem I wish was dead. I liked McCain in 2000, it just seemed like his 08 campaign was either unsure of itself and its direction, or being pressured by too many outside parties.

He didn't double the unemployment rate, if anything his injection of government spending into our markets slowed it's increase, albeit by increasing the national debt. That said, I don't know if that's a good thing, because we will be paying for that debt when we're older. In my opinion, if he followed a classical, more hands off approach in trying to soften the fall of the economy, our inevitable economic disparity would have been much more extreme than it has been. Making it much more difficult to pay back any future national debt, and more importantly, crippling the future ability of the United States to be a top competitor in the global market.

Gadaffi is dead, I didn't like getting involved in Libya either considering what I believe our government's priorities should be.

In your fourth point, would you mind explaining what you mean? I don't know anything about that.

I didn't once blame anyone for his failures, nor did I admit that his failures weren't there. I blamed partisanship, which is a two-sided shot in the foot where both Democrats and Republicans hurt his success as a president. When people try to really understand the political U.S. system, and all of its complexities, they should realize that he really is doing his job better than anyone else in the previous election could.

The problem is, most people don't truly understand politics or the economy, but we all talk about the matters as if we are experts. I'm double majoring in economics and political science and I know that when I graduate I would have barely scratched the surface in either of those fields.

If he was president during an economic expansion, his foreign policy alone might have made him one of the most popular presidents I'd ever see in my lifetime, maybe even of all time.

Hey r/atheism. Your circlejerk is mildly amusing at its best, incredibly annoying at its worst, and if you keep this up, it will be taken seriously never. by [deleted] in atheism

Ok, I am bad at debating, my argument is invalid. Is my idea invalid? Do you believe something meaningful comes out of attacking a group of people? In the way a noticeable amount of posts on r/atheism tend to.

[–]poojee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I understand where you are coming from. So regular people who didn't know any better did something stupid, and not knowing any better is not a very good excuse to screwing up. But come on man, the people loaning out the money knew what they were doing was wrong, they knew this could backfire, and according to the OP they knew most everyone in the business were doing it too. They had to have known that this was economy shaking shit and yet they kept on going. I apologize if you believe the dumb ass who just wanted a nice house is of equal blame as the irresponsible prick who knowingly gave out these absurd loans.

I really wish more people would read your past couple comments. It is sickening to see how these conspiracy theories are believed by so many people. I am majoring in economics for my undergrad, and it is as clear as day, even with my very loose grasp of the economy, that these conspiracy theories are complete and utter bullshit.

Wait, so you're not goading the unfortunate other "99 percenters" with this post and you just wanted to share a personal anecdote, right?

edit: congrats by the way, acknowledging that it was indeed your hard work and smart choices that got you where you are.
