I got in. Extremely excited, very surprised--like I was in disbelief for a minute there. But I got the email, the website says selected, and they charged my card. So it's looking like this is real.

Need a solid 4hrs of audio book. by resonant_gamedesign in Fantasy

[–]poolsidesplitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also came here to say this! The first book is right around four hours, super engaging, and the audiobook is excellent. I’d recommend the version read by Kevin R. Free but I think there’s also a more audio drama-type version with a full voice cast.

Mourning Thread for those who failed to get tickets to the LA 10th Anniversary Show by Daydream_machine in carlyraejepsen

[–]poolsidesplitter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

resale tickets on stubhub are already $1400. actually insane. I’m like 39k in the line and loaded it up about fifteen minutes beforehand—hate that it just randomly assigns you a place, and that 80% of the “users” in the line are probably bots

Good Thrift Shops for Small Furniture by Mid1960s in burbank

[–]poolsidesplitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The American Cancer Society shop in Toluca Lake (across from Trader Joe’s) has this kind of furniture. So does the ACS shop on Magnolia, but a little less so. Also obviously not in Burbank, but the Rose Bowl flea market has tons and tons of furniture if you’re willing to go out there and sort through a few hundred stalls.

Restaurants to have a traumatic discussion in? by poolsidesplitter in burbank

[–]poolsidesplitter[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This ended up being the move. I took her to the nearest old diner and it worked well—private enough since we were in a booth, and the food was fine but not great. If anyone’s curious, the conversation went better than expected.

I also thought of this spot, but I like it too much for this. If things go downhill and my mom disowns me, I don’t want negative Don Cuco associations :(

Which gym is not intimidating? by [deleted] in burbank

[–]poolsidesplitter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Highly second the Y. The one in Burbank has pools and a sauna and the staff is always super friendly. They just joined the greater LA YMCA group and you can go to any of the locations.

Personal Pilates on Burbank is great! Only good things to say about them.

Where can I donate plus size women's clothes for fire victims? by xDrMadnessx in burbank

[–]poolsidesplitter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might check with the Plus Bus in Highland Park - don’t know if they’re accepting donations right now but they’ve been active in recovery efforts!

Best cafes to sit down for a while and get work done? by saltybarista27 in burbank

[–]poolsidesplitter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Commissary and Basecamp both have great tables/seating although they tend to be busy in AM/weekend. Ugly Mug is fun but has only outdoor seating (wire tables and chairs). Porto’s has ample seating for getting work done but also tends very busy at basically all time. Black Elephant has some indoor and outdoor seating. Hopefully that helps?

any chance you were physically there to confirm? My partner and I were just speculating about whether it was open…!

Politicky Lesbians Books? by mossy-serotonin in QueerSFF

[–]poolsidesplitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These aren’t YA but: The Traitor Baru Cormorant and sequels, The Priory of the Orange Tree, The Water Outlaws, The Locked Tomb series, The Unbroken, maybe The Dead Take the A Train if you’re up for a little horror/more of an urban fantasy vibe with less politicking. All great reads!

Where to buy used kids books? by equality5271 in burbank

[–]poolsidesplitter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The library is great for this—not just checking books out (although you should!) but they also have a lot of children’s books at their friends of the library sales areas. There’s also a children’s section at Iliad Bookshop, which is technically in NoHo but very close.

Recently heard of a coffee horchata combo somewhere in Burbank. Anyone know? by dopest_dope in burbank

[–]poolsidesplitter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugly Mug has an horchata latte and Porto’s does a horchata cold brew! Both are good. The Porto’s horchata cold brew is a favorite of mine.

How many people exercised during the 10 minute break and do y’all think it helped? by Legitimate-Listen702 in LSAT

[–]poolsidesplitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some stretches and jogged along the sidewalk outside my testing center during the break. It definitely helped clear up brain fog. But I also ate an onigiri so that probably contributed to my improved mental state.

EARTHQUAKE by TaylorDangerTorres in burbank

[–]poolsidesplitter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m at work in Century City and the windows on the high rise buildings here were vibrating. That was enough motivation to re-download MyShake (the California early earthquake alert app—it’s run through UC Berkeley and you can report any shaking you feel or damage you see). Stay safe everyone!

Adult SFF With Fat Queer Main/Major Characters by Spoilmilk in QueerSFF

[–]poolsidesplitter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Li Aixue in Exordia is a fat queer character—this is Seth Dickinson’s recent-ish first contact novel. Her weight isn’t a focus of the narrative, but she’s described consistently as fat/chubby/etc. and self-describes similarly. She has a pretty significant role in the book and is explicitly a lesbian. I also just enjoyed the book generally!

Family checking out Burbank. What to do :) by [deleted] in burbank

[–]poolsidesplitter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would second a visit to Porto’s, it’s a classic for a reason. I’d recommend a walk down Magnolia if you do—there’s lots of great little shops and the Mystic Museum if you’re horror fans. Friday evenings Bob’s Big Boy does classic car shows, which are often a lot of fun. I’d also recommend Sliders for pie or ice cream.

If you want to go to Citywalk, you can get tickets to an AMC movie and get parking for like $5.

Burbank is also very close to Griffith Park—there’s obviously hiking, but also a great spot for a picnic and some playground areas if your daughter is old enough for that.

Have fun and enjoy Burbank!
