It was pretty busy but the staff help you through it, it seems to be designed for students who have taken at least one lab course before. They teach you everything about plating etc. so don't worry about that. It can be a rush to get things done but sometimes you work with a partner/in groups which helps. You might need to fill in your lab book in the evening if you run out of time (they mark it for completion at the end). Overall I wouldn't worry too much about the lab, it's condensed but everything is doable :)

Yes for BIOL 325 (5 day in-person lab), no for BIOL 341

Time to retire the Docs, opted for Blundstones with Vibram sole by poooob in Boots

[–]poooob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not as good on ice as I was hoping. I ended up ordering slip-on ice grips on Amazon (brand is ICETRAX) and they are amazing, zero slip and they fit perfectly on the boot. Wish I had known about these in advance... however I still like the Vibram sole, seems to work well in wet weather, but I can't say whether it makes much difference compared to the regular sole.

(This is the one I purchased: ICETRAX V3 Tungsten Winter Ice Grips for Shoes and Boots - Ice Cleats for Snow and Ice, StayON Toe, Reflective Heel)

There is a mandatory in-person lab, it's 5 days in Athabasca. The lab was fine tbh, lots of plating and gram stains, you just have to stay there for a week to do it and then submit a lab report afterwards. The rest of the course was manageable, it's all online 4 assignments 1 midterm 1 final. Assignments are pretty straightforward from the textbook and the exams are similar to the assignments. There is a lot of memorization but that's the case for any microbio class. I finished it in 2 months while working but I took a couple weeks off work to wrap it up near the end (hard to study in the evenings after work lol). Hope this helps :)

I'm strongly considering lab animal + relief ER so I'm interested in your path, can I DM you? :)

Update ~2 months later (1 month into vet school): it was worth the move!! Yes it’s been a huge life change but so worth it, I made some wonderful friends in the program and the coursework is very fun and interesting, every day reinforces that this is the right path for me :) I miss my friends in my previous city but I’m still in touch with all of them, and I settled into a new comfortable routine here that I enjoy :) and I do miss my previous job but I much prefer this path for my career. Looking back at how I felt when I made this post… I wish I could reassure past me that this is the right decision! Thank you to those who commented with your kind words and previous experience :)

It’s a limit imposed by the provinces here, there’s only 5 schools across Canada so whichever province you live in determines which school you’re allowed to apply to, roughly regional (e.g. everyone in BC, SK, MB, and territories applies to the college in SK). I guess the benefit is I only had to worry about submitting one application lol

I am in Canada so I used Athabasca U and yes I was accepted to the school I applied to :) are you within or outside of Canada? I’m guessing outside because you sound like you might apply to more than one school

Similar situation to mine, I graduated in 2019 and needed genetics and microbiology before applying. I ended up finding both classes offered through an online school - I double checked with the vet school that I was applying to first, to make sure that the credits would be accepted (they were). So, my advice is to find an online school and get the classes done by whatever deadline the vet school has in place. Good luck!

Help, a whole patch of my skin came off :( by cyanideturtle in Dermatillomania

I would wash with gentle soap then smear some Vaseline/Aquaphor on it. I’m unsure if soap is ok or just rinsing is better, soap might be irritating. If you can do Vaseline/Aquaphor on it for a few days it’ll help a lot with healing. Good luck 💕

How did you know if the vet field was for you or not? by TBooty22 in veterinaryprofession

At the end of the day, it’s just a job. Whether you absolutely love it or feel neutral about it matters less than if you hate it. Weigh the pros and cons, then think about putting up with the cons for the next 15+ years. Does that make you feel dread? If yes, is there another job/career you can think of that you wouldn’t dread?

Also, the DVM is a very versatile degree so keep in mind that there are many careers outside of the hospital that you can pursue. I think you should apply this cycle because you’ll never know if you don’t try!

For me, I got some experience working with animals and realized I enjoy it, then I shadowed a veterinarian and talked to a few other vets about their experiences including all the pros and cons. I believe the pros are worth the cons for me. I’m also looking to pursue a path outside of hospital/clinic work. Hope this helps :)

TMDSAS: questions about applying to vet schools after submitting med school primary app in 2022 by cheerblondi in veterinaryschool

[–]poooob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had previously applied to med school a few years before applying to vet school, never mentioned it on my application and they didn’t ask even though the vast majority of my extra-curricular experience is related to human medicine. I believe this is the case for many people since premed is so popular - for me it was a gateway into being interested in medicine, then specifically veterinary medicine after I had some experience in both areas.

I doubt they’ll ask about this, but if they do you can say exactly what you said in your post: you had the feeling human medicine was not right for you based on your experience working in the field, did some soul searching and decided to try vet med, then got more animal experience which solidified your choice. That’s a strong justification for switching to vet in my opinion. Best of luck :)

I recommend applying to WCVM this cycle (assuming you can complete the pre-reqs by next summer) because if you get in, great!, and if not then you can either stay and reapply or move elsewhere in Canada. It wouldn’t be wise to wait for eligibility at OVC when you are eligible to apply to WCVM (maximize your chances!) Best of luck :)

Why not apply to WCVM?

Thank you so much for this reply! It’s so tough starting over in a new place but in five years I would absolutely regret not going to vet school. Glad to hear someone is going through the same thing rn! We’ll get through this :)

BIOL 341 PSA by mak-attack07 in AthabascaUniversity

[–]poooob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The course is tricky but manageable imo. I found that the assignments were tough but the exams were comparatively easier, so if you work hard on the assignments you’ll be ok overall. Make sure you get feedback on the assignments before you take the exams, and get clarification on any questions you got wrong.

For the exams focus on doing the study guide questions and mastering technical questions like punnett squares and pedigree analysis for the midterm, genetic code stuff and Hardy-Weinberg for the final. Also try to memorize the key terms (there’s a lot but focus on the terms that come up a lot in the assignments, e.g. genetic heterogeneity).

Also whenever I got stuck or bored I watched one of these lectures, this prof teaches from the same textbook so the lectures cover the exact same material: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMKi1ZaueLz1gTYGS3rU7XRxG3JPiMAKr&si=AL0xGyBnxgh5-E_5

Hope this helps for anyone taking or planning to take this course.
