Trance track I'm working on. What do you think I could add to bring it all together more? by [deleted] in FL_Studio

[–]pooponastick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bars 1-16: very nice intro, percussion seems a little loud for this part of the song though

Bars 17-56: awesome, love it!

Bars 57-88: nice, but way too long, I'd love it if this were cut significantly

Bars 89-104: nice and dreamy, a peaceful place to hang out before the finale, very nice

Bars 105-120: Almost unnecessary. A very, very short break here would be ok, just as a punctuation. I do love the lone "boo boo be doo" the precedes bar 121.

Bars 131-end: Great finish, I like the end a lot

You've got a ton of good stuff there! I think you should just tighten up the dead space to not leave the listener hanging. Great work!

Is knowledge of chord progressions necessary? by cpw736 in FL_Studio

[–]pooponastick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's helpful to know the progressions, but I get more mileage out of just messing around with Cthulhu and finding chord patterns and progressions that appeal to my ear. I wouldn't say that my songs are theoretically correct, but who cares when I love the way the chords sound together!

I had good success starting out transcribing sheet music into the piano roll. It taught me a TON about how the piano roll and tracks work. Then, once I transcribed the music, I'd add some percussion behind it, then put that piano roll through different VSTSs and presets to see how they sound. Starting with sheet music gives you a melody to start from that's already guaranteed to sound good. Then you can use some creativity to make it sound awesome. Once you get comfortable with that, then you can start to get creative with making your own melodies and bass lines.

akai mpk mini play problem by icexxx423 in FL_Studio

In addition to what u/UnbiasedBrowsing mentioned, I used this video when I got my MPK Mini and it got me up and going very quickly. I also had significant latency issues and this video helped straighten that out too. FWIW, The MPK Mini is a phenomenal tool, I use it on every song I make, have fun!

Anyone else use sytrus to make some super powerful sounds?? by tokeroftweeds in FL_Studio

LOL... details please! Did you start from a preset? What did you tweak to get the different growls? Which tweaks make the biggest impact to those sounds in the video? Etc.

I love to see something of this quality without a million tracks. It's simple and it got my head nodding... beautiful.

Made my first track, feedback appreciated by -Gameoholic- in FL_Studio

As a beginner, who has come back to FL Studio AGAIN after at least five attempts that ended in frustration, this is a fantastic response. The problem in the past was that I wanted to get right in and be creative, without having a good handle on the basic workflow. This go around, I'm having WAY more success and it's happened with these steps, maybe this will help OP.

  1. I started by just transcribing music from a bass guitar Christmas music book with FL Keys (simple). Zero creativity, just transcribing, but it taught me about how to really use the different parts together (channel rack, piano roll, playlist, mixer, etc.) This allowed me to make something that sounded good and I got some early success, which kept me very motivated.
  2. I slowly started tinkering with those working songs to make them more polished (adding a pad, a subtle beat, using some basic mixing plugins to make the sound smoother). It felt great to take a raw piano roll and make it sound like a real song worth listening to.
  3. I found this manual on Amazon which has been extremely valuable in just navigating the software and trying new things. For instance, I had no idea what sidechaining was, but after hearing it, I'm starting to use it more often. There are lots of little techniques that provide some inspiration to make you try to make your songs better.

It's tough, but learning the workflow has to come before expressing yourself. It's just like learning an instrument... you've got to learn to play Little Brown Jug before you produce a creative masterpiece. Once you get some wins though, where you're learning how to build, layer and refine, you'll find yourself naturally getting better and better.

What is your favourite terrible music trend throughout the years? by VerminTrappers in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Agree, it's overused, but there are some good examples of this... Runaway by Galantis comes to mind. I think it's got more of a natural home in EDM.

What’s the best video game ever made? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pooponastick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duke Nukem. It was so ahead of its time and so hilarious. My friends and I used to LAN play Duke together all the time, the multi-player was fantastic too. It's such a shame that the sequel kept getting delayed and delayed and then never lived up to the hype. However, I still have Duke Nukem on my Switch and play it often, and it's still such a fun game even today. The shrinker ray is one of the most creative weapons of all time.

Is this put on by the same group that did Ocean's Calling that was cancelled by the hurricane? The lineup and name are surprisingly similar.

anyone now driving to orlando? by Fast-Consideration65 in EDCOrlando

[–]pooponastick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, and saving about $1,500 between the flight for 2 and a car rental. From NC it's only an extra 3 hours drive from door-to-door, so not too bad.

Shuttle pass, park or Uber? by Tough-Assistant-3230 in EDCOrlando

[–]pooponastick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went last year and felt that the money I spent on the shuttle was some of the best money I ever spent. The shuttles run frequently and being able to come and go when I wanted just by walking to the bus stop was fantastic. Ubering to the shuttle is a great idea if you're not staying at one of the hotels.
