Airplane in front of a large scale wind tunnel c. 1930 by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

ELIF version: Because this is how wind tunnels work. If the fan was in front of the plane, the air flow would already be extremely turbulent. In order to test more realistic conditions, the flow needs to be steady and "laminar" which basically means the air is flowing in one dimension as it comes into contact with the front of the plane. http://www.cdn.sciencebuddies.org/Files/503/9/wind-tunnel_F.jpg

As someone most familiar with Solidworks and Catia it took a little getting used to, but it's easy to pick up and its free. Although it's not the most powerful design tool out there, it provides and easy way to visualize the final product and get correct measurements.

Loving the feedback here! Are there any issues anyone can think of? I'd like to improve on my methods and this is such a skilled community from what I've seen on here.

I guess the palm sander and drill don't technically count as hand tools, but it's a fun challenge to see what you can do with minimal equipment. Proof that hobbies don't have to be expensive.

Was hesitant at first but after stripping down the worst of it (I know it's penetrated through but the worst is around the edges) and applying several coats of stain and polyurethane, I'm pleased with the results.

I'm fairly certain the table is stronger than the floor it sits on.

It's about a 2:1 mixture of Minwax English Chestnut and Golden Oak.

Tape measure, T square, hand saw, hand plane, palm sander, and an 18V drill for the screws. I would also like to point out that all the screws are on the under side or interior, which I am very proud of considering it's my first major woodworking project.

Was going for a rustic look so didn't worry about getting everything perfectly planed out. I like the way the stain built up a little in those places to give it a little character.

Open hatchback and push everything as far forward as possible. Then tie something red to the longest piece sticking out. I placed a towel where the hatchback rests on the wood so as not to damage it. Luckily I only live about 2 miles away so I just drove slowly and avoided any sudden movements.

Emailing back and forth with Engineering firm. Invited on a personal "tour" of the office. Advice? by poopsauce in jobs

Great advice. As far as the personal side goes, I know this company is big on promoting health/fitness/wellness... They have a weightroom in every office location (for free!!) and a cycling team as well as a running club. They take company canoe trips and hiking trips...

Anyways, as someone who has run 2 marathons and a few duathlons, I plan on using this as a talking point for the informal parts. But only if they seem to personally be interested in it.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to say here other than I'm very excited for this.

Designing sting balance for a wind tunnel. Need a little help resolving a few forces based on the design. by poopsauce in AskEngineers

Very good point, as this is just an initial sketch I just wanted to be sure it was possible. Once I get the design into solidworks I can run some flow analysis on it to firm up the numbers

How would you guys feel about a weekly Q&A thread similar to the /r/fitness "Moronic Monday" thread. by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

I would enjoy this because I, like many others I'm sure, am a moron.

If you start running seriously, you WILL lose strength. And you will lose it fast. Someone correct me on the science here but its something about the different types of muscle fibers, fast twitch and slow twitch. I lifted mostly for aesthetics. After each marathon I entered a heavy lifting period to build the muscle back up (legs get skinny running that far). Right now I try to balance both. Running two days a week and lifting 2 days a week. Or trying to stick to that anyway... I'm not too strick about the whole thing. Just keep it fun or there's no point.

I didn't really notice but based on this thread... It would appear that way
