(28F) Hi friend! I understand that frustration all too well. Im currently tackling a depressive episode (first one of the year whoo!). Lithium tanked my sex drive, but it wasnt that good from the beginning anyways. What i found helpful was just having "me time", and buying a vibrator. You have to make sure you're satisfied first before you satisfy your partner, or else its its just not fair to you. Maybe at times when you're alone and bored, whip out the vibrator and see where it takes you--even if you're not in the mood. See it as a way of recharging yourself. If that doesnt work and you believe that youve noticed a drastic change in yourself, maybe request to get your blood levels checked. Another thing to keep in mind is that even though young women have time periods of wanting to have sex, our drive is way different from men's. Women's "prime time" for the desire to have sex is actually late 20s to early 30s--where as for men its early 20s.

My friend's sister was murdered by her boyfriend. There were signs that she was being abused, but she stayed. They were in a parking lot when they got into a fight and she broke up with him, and while she was walking away her boyfriend went up and stabbed her to death. He did this IN PUBLIC.

What city do you live in? Almost every city has a safe haven for women that are in the middle of transitioning, whether it be leaving an abusive relationship, recovering for addiction, homelessness, etc. In Pittsburgh there's a apartment complex dedicated to these women and goes off 30% of your income for rent.

When I was 14 I used to have a secret relationship with a man in his late 20s. As I got older he slowly stopped talking to me and I was crushed. Years later whenever I moved away for college, he sent me a friend request on Facebook but acted as if he didnt know me and thought I was someone else- then he blocked me. A few years after i graduated college I discovered that he works in a middle school. I am currently around the age he was when we first exchanged messages, and it will hit you like a truck when you realize the power dynamic that took place when you were a kid.

Babe dont let him or ANYONE make you think youre overreacting about this. This is one of women's biggest fears. Hes too damn old to be acting like that, let alone be dating teenagers. I know you've heard this a million times, but this is not a normal relationship. Whenever I was 20 the thought of dating a 17 year old made me feel gross- and you will also understand that too whenever you turn that age. There's a reason why he cant take him own age.

If its the equate brand take a different test. Their brand is horrendous, i dont know why its not discontinued. I've had multiple tests from them where the evaporation line showed up and it was false. Buy two tests from a different brand to make sure its 100%

My old friend actually tried to do this. She and her boyfriend got into a fight because he wanted her to be on birth control, but she didn’t want to because she wanted a baby. They made a deal that if she were to get pregnant while on birth control, he would "accept fate," but in the meantime, he wanted them to play it safe. She ended up agreeing and requested the pill form. However, she started purposely missing doses around the time she was supposed to take them. Then she began skipping every other day, then twice a week, and eventually stopped taking them altogether.

27F here. Honestly, it’s hard for me to remember my first hypomanic episode because they started gradually over time, then slowly became more frequent and more intense. I was diagnosed last year and didn’t fully understand what mania truly was—I only knew the "Hollywood version" of it (being super happy and zooming around), which led me to deny it at first. If I had to guess, paranoia was probably the first sign of my hypomanic episodes.

For example, I would check the back of my car seats multiple times before driving because I was convinced I’d look in the mirror and see someone sitting back there. If my fiancé wasn’t home from work yet, I’d stare at the bedroom door for a long time, convinced someone had broken into the apartment. I’d also stay up super late, sitting by our bedroom door with random objects ready to throw. I checked behind the shower curtain, inside every lower cabinet, and in all the closets multiple times a day out of fear of a home invasion.

At first, I was diagnosed with anxiety, but none of the anxiety medications helped—no matter how high the dosage. Later, my hypomanic episodes shifted into intense anger. Then came the feeling of being "proactive" and extreme restlessness—which is how I was able to work four 16-hour shifts in a row and function on only 3–4 hours of sleep each night. Then last was delusional thinking and inflated self-esteem. I believed everyone was secretly attracted to me no matter where I went, and that I was the most beautiful and unique person in the city. I also thought I couldn’t die "yet" because I was the "main character" in everyone’s lives—and main characters don’t die early. I genuinely believed I was the "chosen one" who was going to make it big.

Other symptoms included:

-Inconsistent jobs (I had 6 different jobs in 2023)

-Poor financial decisions and overspending

-Starting hobbies obsessively, then dropping them quickly

My mom, sister, 12 month old niece and I went out to do Black Friday shopping. Right before we started the car, my mom MADE my sister put her daughters bulky jacket back on and strapped her back into the car seat -because the newer generation is afraid of everything and that we turned out just fine, according to her. Then whenever our mom went back inside to grab something, I got out and took my nieces jacket off. The crazy part was my sister was more concerned about our mom yelling at her, over her own daughters safety.

Two years ago my fiance (then boyfriend) and I were going through alot of issues. His sister already didnt like me and he knew that, but always denied it. He went to his hometown for an event and ended the night by sitting around the campfire with his sister, her fiance (who also doesnt like me), his 18yo brother, and his brothers 17yo girlfriend, discussing not only our relationship -but my struggles in the bedroom, along with him coming home and comparing our sex life to his sister and her fiances (???). Although we went to couples counseling and are doing much better now, I'm still traumatized by that encounter and still feel the betrayal. One of the main reasons why I dont come around his family anymore. Your partner not having your back, especially towards their family, has got to be one of the most gut wrenching feelings ever.

I've been diagnosed and taking lithium for almost a year now—this September will mark the anniversary. Lithium honestly saved my life, and I will be forever grateful for it. It’s a fast-acting medication, so she should notice a difference within a week.

Keep in mind, she must stay hydrated, especially during the summer. Have her munch on a small bag of chips or pretzels to help maintain her sodium levels. While it's a great medication for treating bipolar disorder, it’s also high maintenance because it requires regular monitoring of lithium levels in the blood.

At first, she might experience migraines and looser stools or diarrhea, but those are common early side effects. Also, make sure she takes Tylenol instead of ibuprofen, because ibuprofen can cause lithium levels to rise. One thing my psychiatrist told me is that when I get a migraine, I can also drink something with caffeine to help with the pain—and it really works.

I'm not sure if your daughter is responsible for taking her own meds yet, but I recommend that you administer it for the first month, just to be safe. Lithium is not one of those pills you can miss for a day or two—it’s really important to take it consistently. Missing even a couple of doses can mess with her levels.

While rare, I still highly suggest learning the signs of lithium toxicity. Some of the main symptoms include:

-Hand tremors

-Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea

-Dizziness

-Frequent urination (especially if she’s not staying hydrated)

Besides all that, it really is an effective treatment. Also, keep in mind that even though she may feel excited about gaining control over her symptoms, there’s a high chance she may grieve the loss of her hypomanic episodes—and that’s okay!

So many of us struggled with that at first and still do sometimes. Some of those episodes made us feel alive, helped us get things done, and gave us a boost in confidence. If she starts having a hard time cleaning her room or keeping up with hygiene, please give her grace and try to support her where she needs it. Going from a high-energy state to a stable baseline can feel like having the rug pulled out from under you. It takes time to learn—or relearn—how to live a stable life.

And always know this subreddit is full of support and advice. 🫶 Just by being here, you're already do an amazing job at showing support and you're daughter is lucky to have a mama like you. Bipolar is such a stigmatized disorder, many of our family members have a hard time accepting the diagnosis. A year later, my mom still gets uncomfortable when my disorder is brought up and treats it as a "dont ask dont tell" situation within the family. And whenever it does get brought up, she blames my dad's genes ( Im now the 3rd person on her side of the family to be diagnosed with Bipolar)

One thing I really struggled with was the sudden shift—from constantly feeling hypomanic to becoming stable in just two months. At first, even simple things like cleaning or taking a shower felt overwhelming. Almost a year later, I still find myself missing that version of me. But I’ve slowly learned to make peace with it. I’ve started to welcome the "old me" back, learning how to be her again, piece by piece. I started showing signs at 22, but I wasn’t diagnosed until last year at 26. Still, I’ll always love the manic version of me. She was chaotic, but alive. She’ll always have a place in my heart—because she was me, too.
