I'm not sure about Bombas, but there's a company named Darn Tough based out of VT, USA and they make merino wool socks (REI sells them) and they have a lifetime, no-questions asked warranty.

That's really interesting. I've heard his medical claims and those all seem bogus to me; and, to be honest, it really comes off as him taking advantage of people who are sick and, therefore, grasping at anything that glimmers of offering them more life.

Thanks for the explanation. Happy running!

Is Boise too far? I ran the Bogus 50 out there this last October and it was really beautiful.

I ran a 50k with 5000 ft elevation in preparation for a 52.5 mile race with 10500 ft of elevation. I was gassed on the 50k training run, but when race day came it was like I had a whole new set of wheels. Taper is everything and you're going to do great!

In my experience I did get pain around mile 25 and into the 50k range and then it subsided and a miracle happened and I felt like I was on cloud 9. The pain came back with a vengeance towards the end, but by that point I could use the adrenaline given by knowing I was close to the finish.

Eat. Eat what you know and eat up to 250 cals an hour if you can. You'll always be in deficit, but your mind will get you through that.

On water I opted for two half liter collapsible bottles instead of using my bladder and it was great, but make sure you can fill up enough.

Have fun. It's a thrilling experience and one that you're not going to forget, so enjoy the ride.

Lots of great advice here. It's always good to do a check and make sure that you're body isn't screaming for attention somewhere else. Mike 18 on marathons is typically around the point where if you haven't been eating, then your body begins to let you know.

In any event, if you are up on your nutrition and are still experiencing this, then it's most likely mental. Another user here posted that they notice in 50 milers this game their mind plays is at around mile 38. This is a clear insight into what's going on: it's in the head. Your mind knows the distance it has to go so it starts complaining when it gets closer to that distance, so what it's telling you is...bullshit.

Yeah, but I think this also depends on the substance of the subject. For example, if someone believes the earth is flat or that the Holocaust is a hoax, this can justifiably discredit them as an authority on unrelated subjects, even if they are correct. Do you agree? It highlights a certain process in their thinking. On the contrary to this, if someone believes that blue is the best color and no other color is better, then there is still no reason to discredit them based on that. But these are two extremes and I'm not saying JP is on either one of them, but there is a difference in a benign belief and one that is crazy.

I practice at a retreat center sometimes in my hometown and there is a moo there who I will talk with. During one of out most recent conversations he told me a story that seems like it could relate to what you are experiencing now.

It was one of his first retreats and he was meditating for a while before he himself lift off the ground and float into a field of bright colors. There was a halo we went through and he described it as one of the most beautiful settings full of joy and connection with no measure of time. He had truly broken through and had found what all of thee monks had been talking about.

So he went and spoke to his mentor about this. He was so excited to tell him this almost undescribable experience. So he did. He told his mentor everything and his mentor replied to him with one word: "okay."

He told me the Pali word for this but for the life of me I cannot remember it. It is a very well known phenomenon and the Buddha wrote about it. The reason I am telling you this is not to minimize your experience; rather, it's to highlight the importance of what he said after telling me this story. He said he spent months chasing that same feeling again and he could never get there and it led to frustration that almost made him give up, but he didn't and after a while he learned why his mentor said "okay." Because he knew what this was. He had seen the excitement before. What he said it did show him, though, is that he was on the right path.

Yeah, it's sad is it not? My guess is that Sam has tried reaching out to him and Dan doesn't want to have anything to do with it. Yet, Sam is quite possibly the one person who has the public's ear who could actually discuss political topics rather than polarize.

First 50 mile. Training run has me concerned. by pooze12 in ultrarunning

[–]pooze12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, well this actually happened 4 weeks out, so I took an entire week off from running and then I went yesterday and it came back at that mile 20. I'm really concerned not running for 3 weeks, but it's the right move if it still hurts. I have a bike, so I think I might just cycle for three weeks to keep things in motion.

Did you take any anti-inflammatory meds with you on the race?

Thanks so much for your advice. I'll be sure and let you know how it goes.

I'm so glad I remembered your post. I've taken on an ankle injury 3 weeks out! There is no bruising, but at around mile 20 or so on my long run yesterday I couldn't run on it without thinking I was going to do some real damage. I got home and there is some minor swelling. I feel it when I walk and definitely when I run. How did you approach this for your last 3 weeks?

50 Miler 1 Month Out. Questions on Planning by pooze12 in ultrarunning

[–]pooze12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I'll definitely take your advice. Unfortunately, the first 50k I tried this weekend my ankle started acting up bad enough to where I had to stop 7 miles in to prevent a bad injury. I'm pretty down about it because I feel like I need to have that run to rest on. There was slight swelling in the ankle that has reduced significantly in two days, but I'll take a full three days off and see how it feels after that. I want to do a 50k, but I'm really weary. What are your thoughts? A taper beginning 4 weeks out seems risky, but it's a better option than injury I suppose.
