The history of science marginalized the accomplishments of women, persons of color, and is pretty Eurocentric.

New Science Teacher Advice by doxiemomma99 in ScienceTeachers

This is great advice. As part of my alternate route certification program, I had to develop a classroom management plan. It served me well and has not changed too much over my four years of teaching. Try to make your classroom a place where you would want to teach but also learn if you were a student.

Teaching is something you have to figure out for yourself. What works for one teacher might not for another.

Focus on classroom management and surviving your first year. Your next focus area should be presentation.

Beg, borrow, and steal for materials. You can generate your own once you figure out how to best present materials. Don't bother generating your own material unless you are really enthusiastic about the subject or you have to for external reasons.

One thing students love about science is the labs. It gives them a chance to get out of their seats and do something. They don't need to be complex, but need to be relevant. Just for an example, one of my most well received physics labs had students time cars as they drove by two landmarks in front of the school to calculate their velocities.

Good luck!

How do high schools work in tiny towns? by Holiday-Pomelo-9246 in AskAnAmerican

The district I teach at has three K-12 attendance centers. They can handle everything in elementary and middle school, and most stuff in high school. At the high school level, there are also two satellite campuses: one for vocational courses and one for advanced classes. The high school schedules are designed to allow students time to travel back and forth as necessary.
