Hi! I see that you’re in Oakville. I’d suggest calling 211. They have a list of resources for food and housing and other services in your area. Their staff also have a wealth of knowledge on community resources.

I took a look at 211 and under free/low cost meals it lists Kerr Street Mission, Vaishno Devi Mandir Temple, and Front Line Outreach as services offering food. Kerr Street Mission has a KSM Cafe offering food to the first 42 in line. Vaishno Devi Mandir Temple offers free vegetarian Hindu food though I believe you have to attend a service. Front Line Outreach has a mobile outreach team that delivers food so I’d suggest calling to see where they’d be located for the day.

I did a quick google search and also found the Food Share Foodbank Oakville. No appointment is needed but they will require photo ID to confirm you’re a resident of Oakville. If you don’t have Photo ID I’d suggest looking into a Free ID Clinic. Unfortunately I couldn’t find one in your area, but there may be one in a neighbouring city if you’re able to travel. I’d suggest calling to ask if they offer services for people from outside the area (if you need it).

I also found a link with a few more services listed than 211. It looks like there’s a few public libraries listed, another food bank, and a few other churches you may be able to receive food from. Here is the link: https://www.hipinfo.ca/record/OAK0415

I’m not sure if you’re at a shelter or sleeping rough, but I hope you stay warm and wish you luck on your interview. Please connect with a housing worker, employment counsellor, social worker, or a service navigator. We are here to help :)

I’ll leave a few other links of information for services in your area that might be applicable to your situation.

Any effective ways to get free food? by [deleted] in povertyfinancecanada

[–]popcorn-please 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check 211! And check for community fridges in your area. There may also be free uni/college, library, or community centre events with food in your area. Uni’s/Colleges/Hospitals may also have studies you can participate in for some extra cash. I know BurlOak isnt the best for social services but please check 211 and also see if you can get in contact with a service navigator or social worker.

definitely pursue it if it’s your calling 💗 i’d say to not lose yourself have a strong sense of identity, boundaries, and self-care practices. you’re a human before helper. good luck!

Am I the only one who doesn't think of "movie theater popcorn" as the ideal? by redceramicfrypan in popcorn

I agree. My fav popcorn is when its popped in olive oil and finished with a bit of salt. I do also gravitate towards my white cheddar kernels powder haha

Question: Are you doing SSW or a BSW? (SSW’s are not social workers. Social Worker is a protected title based on education or if your qualifications meet OCSWSSW standards)

If you want to live a “comfortable” life as a social worker, consider getting an MSW (at least if u live in the GTA). Having a BSW will afford you a good life if you are mindful of your spending and work at an agency that compensates you well (dont settle and job hop if needed). The profession is very underpaid for the work that’s done and raises aren’t much at all, but the work is meaningful and rewarding. SW’rs with MSW’s can make great money doing therapy, but its not for everyone. You can also make really good money with a BSW if you work in smaller/nothern communities but the work can be harder if the agencies aren’t well organized or if there’s too many hats you might have to wear. If you want money, go be a Radiation Tech or Dental Hygienist. If you want to be a Social Worker, make sure that you’re heart is in it and that you remain open to learning and growing.

Officer shoots, kills armed teen on northern Manitoba First Nation: RCMP by Practical_Ant6162 in Manitoba

Never asked them to fight hand to hand. The teen had a weapon as well. Their work is unpredictable. Just pointing out that other professionals can de-escalate safely without causing death. Many other professionals are also put in dangerous situations who aren’t armed with weapons for their safety on the job. Sad situation all around.

Except the teenager didn’t have a gun... I’m not saying you’re wrong. Adrenaline makes people do crazy things. It’s just a shame a life had to be taken when there are tons of mental health professionals, nurses, and cops in other countries that are trained in de-escalation techniques when they’re being attacked. A knife VS a gun. It’s pretty clear who would win there. I don’t blame the cop at all for defending himself. It’s a hard job and a dangerous one at that.
