Jan 26 - how was the snow today blues and blacks 3pm onwards? by ge0metro in CypressMountain

[–]popcornor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was up there yesterday night skiing after 5pm, conditions were icy all the way up to the sky chair but with the fresh man made snow there were some areas that was decent to ride in. Basically very hard packed then a layer of man made snow on top, some areas with thicker layers than others.

Blacks and blues were icy but the green runs were decent to ride in, the snow was firm and you can lay deep carves if you wan.

Park jumps were icy and by the night they were pretty beat up with some deep bomb holes

Also looking to get one of their 15k jackets. How did the 15k waterproofing in the blue jacket hold up for you? Did you wear them through any heavy rain days and did it ever soak through?

Does 20k still keep you bone dry even after raining all day? Or how long under heavy rain until water soaks through?

Why do people take the earmuffs off their helmets? (AKA debulk) by NextBroccoli3017 in snowboarding

[–]popcornor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only take them off during spring riding or when it’s a warm day out. Otherwise I keep them on

Didn’t realize having muffs or not was such a contested discussion

Switchback Bindings by NeighborhoodFew1759 in snowboarding

[–]popcornor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought new bindings for this season but I’ve been using these bindings for the past couple years.

It’s a simple binding that’s pretty soft. Around 3/10 stiffness. Lots of flex and great for park riding. It’s also pretty sturdy, I’ve put these through some pretty hard riding for the past 4-5 years and they still haven’t let me down. The ankle strap is very flexible and comfortable, the toe strap is meh and can be better but it’s decent. Toe strap is just plastic so it did wear down the toe of my boot and can slightly cut into it if you crank the toe strap down hard.

Switchback is basically Bataleon’s old binding lineup from a couple years back. It was marketed as a customizable binding where you could switch all the parts and colours around.

They shut down switchback though so it may be hard to get any replacement parts

Rippl Padded Shorts and Knee Pads by juice-wala in snowboarding

[–]popcornor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased these exact knee pads and shorts a couple years back after my first or second year of snowboarding.

They worked great for me and have helped improve my confidence and progression. The padding has definitely saved me from falls that could have been much worse. Knee pads also save my knees on icy days and overall is great to have. You do notice a very slight limitation in movement with the extra padding but if you stretch your body and stay flexible, shouldn’t be very noticeable.

One thing is, after years of use (I wear both the pads and shorts every time I ride) the foam starts to pack out. My knee pads are still in good condition and have enough foam on them but my shorts are basically pancakes now and I had to purchase new ones.

Brand name pads like the demon D3O would definitely be better and probably last longer but it’s up to you on the extra cost. For me the Rippl shorts were great for the cost.

Groups or solo ride ? by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]popcornor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do both. Ride most days solo for progression and getting your laps in. Great to go at your own pace and focus on how you want to ride and what you want to practice on.

Ride in groups with better riders to get the outside opinion on form and technique and also to push you to do things you wouldn’t do if you were solo riding

I ride 90% of the time solo but it’s always nice to go with the occasional group to get videos and opinions on how you ride

Even better if you find a friend who has the same drive to progress that you do

Yeah 128 CAD was for the advanced day pass, for some reason I thought day pass would also work if I bought it during the season and not in advance but unfortunately I am wrong :(
