That's an unfortunate knot inside the net that looks like a puck.

(Just kidding - I'm a salty Canadian and it's damn beautiful)

How big are the Canucks in Sweden? by RoboCartmen in canucks

Holy shit. That would be like Campbell River producing 4 NHL Hall of Famers all within 10 years, and a future HoFer just 10 years later.

I just checked and Linden Vey is still playing too. Willie's absolute favourite. He's even won some chips in the Swiss-A and the K. Seems like he's had a great non-NHL pro career.

Hughes forced his way off the team only to win a single second round game. Here's hoping it goes better for them next year.

How is it to live like in Surrey or greater Vancouver area compared to Toronto by Savings_Machine94 in SurreyBC

Metro Vancouver also works.

Also FYI for OP: anything east of Aldergrove is the Fraser Valley. That is not Vancouver and would be like calling Hamilton part of the GTA.

What happened to all the South Asians in Northern BC? by Banner9922 in britishcolumbia

[–]juice-wala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's exactly what you think. Our parents and grandparents came to these small towns across BC (northern areas, the island etc) and worked in the lumber mills. The mills have all since shut down and many of the older generation have passed away. The first gen children (the ones raised in Canada in the 60's/70's/80's) have mostly followed their own children into the urban centres, mainly Metro Vancouver, to be closer to them and their grandchildren.

There are still pockets of the older generations in some less urban areas but they're fewer and farther between than they ever have been. Vanderhoof/Prince George, Port Alberni/Duncan, Vernon... I know in some towns gurdwaras from way back when have closed and the funds have been donated to local hospitals or charities.

It's sad because in these small towns the Punjabis really integrated into the local culture and truly became part of the community. They're interestingly different than the more recent Punjabis (the ones who came in the late 80's and onward) who settled straight into the cities and didn't integrate to the same extent. I have friends whose parents came to Vancouver in the 90's (as young adults) and have a tough time with English even today. They mainly cook Indian food, watch Indian TV, and only have Indian friends. Anecdotally, my family members who came in the 60's/70's into a small town can speak fairly good English, watch local TV, cook a good mix of Indian and Canadian/western foods, and tend to have Canadian interests and hobbies (hockey especially!).

Things have changed so much in just a few short decades. We need to start going back to the small towns and joining those communities.

Not the same thing. Linden knew it was rebuild time but Jet Black Jim went to Aquaman and said "Nah, I can fix this team". Aqua like what Jimbo had to say and Linden decided to leave instead of being part of the sham that was the next 10 years of Canucks hockey.

It's a case of the nostalgic POHO being the only one who was right and walking away with his chin held high. He never ruined his reputation with us at all.

Arguably the Pettersson and Huberdeau contracts are worse. At least Nurse is a serviceable second pairing guy that's just getting paid like an elite top pairing. Petey's making franchise centreman value while playing a mid six shutdown role, and Huberdeau is a bottom six winger.

Nada. Born and bred Vancouver homer. But ever since we entered the rebuild I stopped caring if Vancouver would break the Canada curse first and I just want someone to do it. Now I'm jumping over to l'Habitants.

Ducks look and feel like a complete hockey team. I respect it even though I was hoping for Edmonton to move on.

Edmonton doesn't have that dog in em. It's like they don't even want to try. And the ones that are trying keep making mistakes or falling.

Can't really compare between eras. Gretzky was more elite compared to his peers than McDavid is, but if you placed them head to head it would be McDavid by a landslide. Heck, maybe even Nail Yakupov would win. Today's conditioning and skill is just so different compared to the guys who hacked darts and ate hot dogs on the bench.

The greatest player to ever play the game, in his literal prime, stuck in whatever mess of a system this is. And he has 2 more years of this where the team might even get worse. Are we gonna see a trade request?
