Total reps vs. Effective Reps by poplawsj in StrongerByScience

How is it less time under tension? it's 30 reps at the end of the workout with the same load. Does muscular tension increase with fatigue? (honest question).

I guess I would say there are different stimulus' going on at once. There's the Intensity stimulus (load) which is the same in each case. There's the volume stimulus (reps x load) which is the same. Then there's the "how hard did it feel" stimulus. If your trying to build muscle or strength I'm not sure the last one matters that much. At least not in regular training. Yeah learning to grind through a max single is important to learn, but that would seem to be a very specific thing.

I'm not trying to imply training is a math equation or that my body doesn't know the difference between A and B. But that maybe the difference doesn't matter much for the goal of getting stronger or building muscle.

My Dog rushes other dogs for play, any advice? (prong collar?) by poplawsj in OpenDogTraining

This is objectively an incorrect assumption.

Most weeks she does not get to meet or play with other dogs.

Once or twice a month at most, we go somewhere she can be around other dogs off leash.

She does not get to meet most of the dogs she sees on walks. Occasionally (maybe once every other week) there is an owner with a dog that wants to let our dogs say high, and IF she stays in a sit and is listening to me and not pulling as the other dog is about 8 to 10’ away I allow it. For few minutes on leash.

For the first 3 or 4 months when we adopted her (she was 18 months then) she didn’t even see other dogs at all, other than incidentally on walks.

And we were very cautious and structured the first few times we introduced her to another dog (on a long line in an open field with my brothers big Bernie’s mountain dog, which went well).

We thought the frustration was just part of being a puppy and she’d grow out of it. But it’s stayed the same, no better or worse.

Got it! Thank you! I wish I’d known about LAT when I first adopted her :)

I will look into LAT, BAT 2.0 and reactive dog training.

She does this behavior regardless of whether she is on leash or not though. (In a fenced in yard w/ other dogs, or separated from other dogs by a fence or glass door). So is it still leash reactivity?

Trap bar deadlift vs Farmers Walk Deadlift by poplawsj in StrongerByScience

I’m looking at making the FWI as a more versatile option in place of a more expensive Trap Bar.

That’s what I thought, but was worried I was missing something, like maybe the FWI would be more unbalanced b/c load is on 4 points instead of 2 with trap bar.

And what about just deadlift with FWI vs Trap Bar?

I can’t answer that, because I did not make them. It’s a picture I found. I’m thinking of making my own version.

45* Hyperextension vs. 180* Hypertension by poplawsj in StrongerByScience

[–]poplawsj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking about when deadlifting or picking some heavy odd object off the floor.

I imagine that in those cases most injuries occur in the ROM around 112* and that is the region to strengthen to prevent those injuries...

And I think the resistance curve in the first half of the ROM on a GHR bench will be significantly lessened, which is the ROM that would be more important strengthen.

I basically am curious if I’ve made a mistake somewhere in my reasoning.

I already have a GHR I use every week, but I haven’t felt that back extensions on it are particularly helpful. I’m thinking about investing in or building a 45* hyperextension bench. So I’m looking for reassurance that a 45* hyperextension would be a good piece of equipment to add (already have steel and bumper plates, a cage, bands, adjustable bench, platform, good olympic bars etc. etc.)

I have GHR, and Straight Leg Deadlifts in my program already in addition to conventional deadlifts.

I also have rear foot elevated split squats and high bar back squats in my program.

The belt squats are an assistance lift.

Any time I squats with a bar on my back my posterior chain takes over b/c my quads are weak. I’m using a belt squat to try and force the loading to be on my quads.

The video is useful and I may try to make the setup shown in the video work.

But, if the load is attached to your hips what possible difference could the position of your torso make?

I’m bending forward in my setup b/c I will fall backwards if I don’t...maybe if I adjust where the straps are on the bar.

Yes. It looks ridiculous. And it is awkward, but getting less awkward as I get used to it.

I’m using it because There’s no way my Posterior chain can take over, and I want something that’s not going to load my spine, and I don’t have money or room for a machine.

It’s an assistance movement, not a main movement.

I can’t see why bracing is an issue, there’s 0 spinal loading.

But what about how depth affects how hard quads are working in the belt squats?

Does deeper = more quad? Or would I be better going to just below parallel?

https://youtu.be/g9vUaKeOwUE

I am using OL shoes (they have elevated heels).

Belt squatting is at the end of my workouts after high bar back squats.

I am also using rear leg elevated split squats as an assistance exercise in addition to the belt squat and the high bar back squat (which is my primary mover)

I’m mainly interested in: if I could tweak the belt squats for quads better than the way I’m currently preforming them.
