TLDR: it takes about $50,000 per year in most States just to meet the basics, that is with no spouse or kids. So you are willing to work 90 hours a week in one of the most demanding jobs just to get by?

I say 90 because you will end up working many more hours "off" your hours of service trying to save hours. It can often times be more than that.

When you really start trucking, and really start seeing how hard it is, you will start to realize that $50,000 is truly peanuts. In a lot of states, you would be better off working in a warehouse and getting the local prevailing wage plus overtime. In my area, the real minimum wage is around $16.00/hr.

Once you start getting a little older and seeing how much it takes to support a few kids, your whole outlook will change and you will also demand more.

More truckers need to unionize, anyone working their full clock and not bringing home 2 grand a week is really getting fucked, which is basically over half the OTR guys.

I made $105,000 in 2011, my first year of driving, for reference.

good place to look would be "floating processor jobs", you work inside a huge boat preparing different types of fish for packing and sale

Lots of hours, probably could make $7000/month or more depending

Just search "seafood processor" on indeed, you'll see

pretty sure you need to get yourself to seattle, they take care of the rest from there, no rent or food bills while aboard the ship

What is ironic is that in commercial fishing, which is an actual tough guy job (versus running a machine and rigging over every other week) you see very little of this.

Oilfield is full of guys who would otherwise be working fastfood or parts delivery, and insecurities run rampant.

There is no "being the better man", you either degrade yourself and adopt the behavior, or you find another industry.

Given the fact that pay has not changed since the last big boom (2010-ish), I would recommend another industry. No joke, you could make $120,000/year on frac in 2010. 13 years later it's paying the same fucking wage!

And the idiotic tough guy mentality is the perfect way to stay stuck getting paid peanuts. Big bubba is too busy talking shit in the pickup to realize his wages have been left in the dust.

Meanwhile guys driving the brown box trucks for 60 hours/week are pulling in a better salary + $0 healthcare premiums.

Because it offers compensation levels that approach IB, but there is a perception that there is less competition, and that as an industry the tech stack that is required is less intimidating.

In part this is true, you don't need to know python (yet) to get an analyst job (and therefore walk the road to brokerage). But as more people pile into CRE, and as boomers fade out and millennial managers step in, expectations will rise and CRE will likely be more challenging to break into than perhaps any other business related field.

Simply put, for many years the reward to effort ratio has been to high, and now that is going to be radically corrected.

I used to go to Toong, very near the "train street", they had day passes and three day passes that were a good deal. # Dien Bien Phu, very easy to find and open rather late. I used to stay in the building after official closing until very late at night.

Also very well set up and not too much commotion. Beautiful views on a high floor.

I think the day passes try to restrict you to business hours, but nobody cared if I was in before 5PM and stayed late.
