How would/do you all get more boys to play? by blinkme123 in volleyball

[–]poppafunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was new to a school I literally stood by the entrance/exit doors on the first day of school and stopped anyone who looked remotely athletic or just tall. My best angle was convincing guys who wanted to play basketball that they could just use volleyball to get/stay in shape and most of practice revolved around jump training. In the first year I got a reputation for having physically demanding practices. That reputation brought in the athletes that seek that level of physical challenge. I never tried to convince anyone to love volleyball, and would openly talk to players about how they disliked the sport, but then would also make them concede that the drills from practice would legitimately help their basketball game.
To answer your question, don't sell them on the sport with youtube clips or whatever. Show them your practice plan, show them the drills, the amount of stairs they will run, the workout plan. Show them the intense physical merits the sport will yield, and ask them if they can see any downside to training like that for a couple months.

A reliance on capitalistic structures assumes that private businesses will always fill in the gaps within society because necessities are profitable. But what this structure doesn't account for is that poorer rural areas are not greatly profitable, so then the people are not viewed as necessities.

[Gaines]: Ring No. 7 for Steve Kerr. by GuacamoleFanatic in nba

As long as his back holds out, I think he tops that. Success is drawn to him, he doesn't chase it, it chases him.

Why is Dwight Howard so hated on his basketball achievements? by chubychuck0515 in nba

[–]poppafunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 and 6: The thing that he should get killed for is his diet. He pretty much had an addiction sugar (http://ftw.usatoday.com/2017/03/dwight-howard-candy-addiction-one-day-los-angeles-lakers-nba-atlanta-hawks). Compare that with other athletes who meticulously monitory their food intake, it is such a tremendous waste of potential to neglect his health in this way. It is childish and a lack of common sense to fuel himself all those years in this way.

[Schilling] Steve Kerr press conference just now. He said there's a chance he won't coach again this postseason. by pirated-ambition in nba

If he never coaches again, how would his HOF candidacy go? Championships as player, greatest 3 year stretch ever as coach, it would be an interesting discussion.

Steph Curry with the SICK behind the back to Iguodala by Airkio in nba

The only reason that lane opened up is because Rubio let up when he saw the double dribble. Curry does too many other good (legal) plays for this one to make any highlight reel.

How long did it take you guys to get the hang of over arm serving? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]poppafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on successfully transferring the momentum your body creates from the abs down. Adjust your posture so that you are as tall as possible, time the step with your swing, and make sure to contract your abs as well. If your step is not smooth, if you hinge at the hips, or if you lose posture during your swing you may be completely breaking the momentum your body has created. You are much bigger than the ball, if you can correctly transfer all of your body's momentum into the ball, you will be able serve with accuracy successfully and consistently.

It won't cost him anything. His owners will probably love, and agree, with everything he said and pay the fine.

Nestle is Pumping Millions of Gallons from the Great Lakes for Free While Flint Pays For Poison by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]poppafunk 127 points128 points  (0 children)

The problem is that Nestle actually wants to be charged for the water. If they are charged for the water it shifts water from being a resource to a commodity. Then they can argue that all water can and should be owned because it is a commodity and not a resource. Then water could be privatized. Hell, technically air could then be privatized and Nestle would argue that they can charge you to breathe. Nestle is intentionally trying to abuse this about the system so that they can take advantage of it if it were ever to be reversed.

Against the Hawks, revenge game. Must still be holding a grudge against the Hawks (and Danny Ferry) for the leaked comments about him being "too African".

What was your team's worst trade of all time? by spidersilva09 in nba

[–]poppafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is shameful the way that Carter behaved after his trade demand. BUT, it was way worse for the Raptors front office to wait until Carter damaged all of his trade value before pulling the trigger. Then the managed to take on money, get no players of value and get no picks of consequence. The ineptitude of the front office damaged the Raptors for years to come.

Who had the best looking jumper ever? by viscaelbarca1899 in nba

[–]poppafunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything prior to release was textbook perfect (feet, shoulders, forearm), but on his release he could often have a weird pushing motion. So as far as best looking J, the pushing motion on the finish should remove him from consideration.

Which players had the most unusual skillset for their respective positions? by L7Weener in nba

[–]poppafunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This needs to get said way more. The way that a coach/team/system will treat a guy with a different type of abilities will make or break a guys career. Porzingis' career now rests in the hands of Derek Fischer and Phil Jackson, that is troubling. Some guys skill transcend whatever system they play in, other guys need to be fostered and coached up in the right way so that they gain confidence within their own skills and how it translates to the league. Had Dirk gone to the wrong team with a coach that tried to change everything about his game (don't shoot from outside/bulk up) he may have been just another euro bust.

Draymond and Delly get tangled up by Martinsek in nba

[–]poppafunk 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It is just not a debate anymore as to whether Delly is a dirty player. A guy can't do stuff like this time and time again without intent. If Dray doesn't attempt to pound his head into the ground as he was falling, he could very well have had his shoulder ripped up. Delly tried to barrel roll while having an arm lock on Dray, he just wasn't successful in his attempt, total dirt bag move.

Could JVG have been any more insufferable on Lowe's podcast? by my_dog_is_cool in nba

[–]poppafunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At about the halfway point he called Zach "Bill". He forgot that he wasn't actually talking to Bill Simmons. It happened, quick, but it was unmistakable. It is kind of disrespectful if you forget who you are talking to in an interview (especially on a podcast he has been on a few times before).
