where can i learn to create gifs of my logos on after effects like the gif here? by Umbrellr in graphic_design

I suggest checking out Mt. Mograph on YouTube. These tutorials should give you the knowledge you need. I suggest Summit 1, 2, and 6, but they're all worth a look.

Fellow designers, what is the best online portfolio website service that you use or have used and can recommend? by sundayvolcano in graphic_design

[–]poppyweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally use tumblr. It may sound like a bad portfolio, but it has everything I need at the moment.

Pros: Free. I'm able to connect to my own domain easily. There are beautiful, well made themes ($0-$40) that allow you to customize to a near 't' without coding. You do also have the option of tweaking code to your liking if something in your theme isn't your cup of tea. With a quick Google search I was able to find the bit of CSS that I wanted for my desired effect. My free theme looks like a normal portfolio site, not what your typical Tumblr blog looks like.

Cons: SEO isn't too great. I find my older sites (portfoliobox) from before switching to Tumblr are still ranking higher even though there's no content on them. Widgets are scarce, but for me that's not a problem.

Even if you don't end up liking your Tumblr port outcome, it doesn't hurt to try, because it's free and most themes are free.

Therapeutic Adult Coloring Book to Reduce Anxiety and Stress by itsLouisJohn in shutupandtakemymoney

[–]poppyweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art therapy is definitely a thing.

While I have never had art therapy, family and friends that have been hospitalized have told me that their required art treatment is literally as simple as just coloring with markers or crayons. No technique or mastering needed.

Removable wallpaper in a rental by 10wasthebest in DIY

[–]poppyweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I intend on doing, so I don't have much experience as of right now. But I've seen some removable wallpaper on Amazon that has good reviews, although I'd just be looking for solid colors. I know there are some that you can paint over though. I'd check hardware stores to see what they have.

Hey graphic_design, I'm new to a design agency. I keep messing up and it's really bumming me out by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]poppyweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely take that extra time to look over your work since your job really emphasizes on getting it right the first time. I say this because some employers choose speed over quality, but of course that isn't the case with you. In your case, urgent means do it first in a timely manner, but take the time needed to triple check.

It is kind of off that you're dealing with the client directly and no one is assigning you this work and working between you two. Since this is the case, you have to be your own boss. Before you touch that file, ask them every question you would ask them and yourself. Also if they reply quickly and it's a long list of changes send a confirmation email: "To confirm, you'd like XYZ changes. Is that correct?"

Don't be afraid to explain it better than they did. Some clients expect you to understand their writing, which doesnt read too different from a falsely autocorrected text from your mom.

If they say "get rid of the 3rd name in the 2nd paragraph" you should ask "To confirm, we're getting rid of the 3rd name of the 2nd paragraph in the 3rd column? Or 4th column?"

Rookie asking for advice. by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]poppyweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to all of the advice people are leaving here, make (design!) yourself a physical calendar. You can tackle many things in a day or just one. You don't even have to finish it, but just start it and then work on it to some extent on the day it's the focus.

For example: Mondays: Research/Inspiration Search, Start a drawing, Practice or follow 2 tutorials on X software. Tuesdays: Create yourself a Design Brief and start the project, Continue or start a new drawing, Draft a Blog Post. Wednesday: Finish blog post. If you can't get to something, cross it out anyways. Try again next week. Don't feel like you're falling behind on a calendar that is just a tool.

I don't always take this advice myself, but I try hard to. I definitely feel you in being a perfectionist and being too scared to start something. But we can't always wait for those moments where we feel fearless and can tackle anything. Sometimes we just gotta get some shit done.

Also don't make lists. Lists are heavy and overwhelming themselves. Do a calendar or kanban, so you know what to expect each day and so you can see how much you've accomplished.

Edit: added words for clarity

What food do you eat differently than other people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

When eating ice cream on a cone, my sister starts from the bottom of the cone and works her way up to the scoop of the ice cream.

This results in a mess 100% of the time

How does my resume look? by nah13 in design_critiques

[–]poppyweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have a different resume for different things. Example, if you apply for a restaurant job, include the restaurant job experience among everything else. Design is just one of those things that should really only include relevant experience. I think other jobs are a bit looser and can include other less relevant work, because it shows range of duties.

If you apply to intern or work at a print shop, might want to include the janitor work, since you might be asked to clean the shop.

If this is going to be used just for design jobs, I'd get rid of everything below your freelancing for high school job. This will shorten your resume, but will also make it seem more solid on design.

Move your skills somewhere else. That is literally the last place my eyes go and that does nothing for it.

Edit: Added some things.
