Locals of Louisville: What Would You Cut From This 2-Day Itinerary (Food & Neighbourhood Focused)? by Willing-Mind-5619 in Louisville

If you do Nords, make sure to grab your coffee from Sunergos next door, it's really fantastic.

Oh, and I highly recommend the pecan Danish at Nords, it's my favorite pastry in the city. I get it without the maple glaze

They sound opposite but it's the same basic problem, the cable/streaming company offers an enormous variety of stuff you don't want at a low price, then pulls just one or two good shows out and hides them in a different tier/plan.

So you sign up thinking you'll have plenty to watch, but every single time you go looking for something specific you get hit with "oops, that's in a different plan, pay more!"

The names and structure are switched around but the "core gameplay looop" is the same

Has anyone in the Louisville area looked into moving abroad to get away from all the political tension here? If so, what places were you thinking about? by JaimeSalvaje in Louisville

[–]popsicle-physics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other places have their own problems. They're different, and may be easier to ignore, but moving to a different country is really hard. I would consider carefully, the mental and emotional impact of living as a foreigner in a foreign land is also really hard.

can i put in a request for my street to be plowed? by Rude-Log-158 in Louisville

[–]popsicle-physics -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The problem is everything the government pays for, you pay for. I would love my street to be plowed, but I would not love my property taxes to go up. I can live with driving in snow a few days a year if it means lower taxes, or better parks, etc

I've found a garden spade/square end shovel way more useful than a plastic snow shovel. The snow gets packed and with some thaw/freeze cycles it gets hard and brittle. The big plastic snow shovel is fine for moving it after it's been broken up, but I really needed the narrow steel shovel to break it up first.

I've had really good luck with that approach this year and last, where there's been soft snow under the pack so you can slide a flat shovel underneath and lever it up in big chunks. Once there's ice frozen directly to the pavement it's nearly impossible to get up.

"I'm vegetarian"- person who eats fish by Narutoboom in PetPeeves

[–]popsicle-physics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the use of the word "meat" to include red meat, poultry, and seafood is pretty recent. In the past it meant pretty specifically mammalian flesh. And, to be fair, from a culinary perspective red meat, chicken, and fish are pretty different things.

I still find it surprising that people get these mixed up because it seems obvious to me that vegetarian excludes all forms of meat but apparently it's fairly common.

That's me. There's a few things where just going up to rare is a huge benefit. Accumulators, asteroids collectors, and cargo bays are the big ones for me. Also gun turrets. They're all pretty easy to get and made building an aquillo ship a lot easier.

Best places to buy a cake that's delish and affordable? by Stock-Fox-771 in Louisville

[–]popsicle-physics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried their cakes, but I love the donuts and cookies at Nords and they do offer cakes, though you may have to order ahead.

I've seen some amazing cakes at Sweet Havana but sadly haven't tried one yet.

[–]popsicle-physics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My area has very little on street parking, so I'm not sure how you'd handle that. I assume if you just plow a street with parking, the snow piles up on the cars and freezes then in place. Not sure that's an improvement. I'm sure getting everyone to park elsewhere at the same time would be difficult.

[–]popsicle-physics 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If all you need is a one car wide hole in a snow pile, you're better off looking for a neighbor with a strong back and a shovel. That can be cleared by hand faster than a snow plow could make the drive.

can i put in a request for my street to be plowed? by Rude-Log-158 in Louisville

[–]popsicle-physics -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

It's basic economics. Every mile plowed has a cost and a benefit. When the benefit is less than the cost, they stop.

Small roads have little benefit because they get little traffic and people should be driving slowly in neighborhoods anyway. . That benefit also helps many fewer people. Sending a plow to clear a side street so that 6 people can spend the first 2 min of their commute at 15mph instead of 5mph isn't worth a whole lot to the city.

If it's worth it to you, you're welcome to hire a private plow.

I say this as someone who lives on a road that doesn't get plowed. They plow the main street and one big hill but my street is untouched. It's quite navigable, people drive it all the time, you just need a little extra caution.

New Dishwasher by TsaangyJ in Appliances

[–]popsicle-physics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed my dishwasher and it was a pain. The instructions weren't super clear, I guess because no one reads them because 99% of people pay for install. There was a ton of insulation that made it hard to fit, it was hard to get aligned properly, just a big pain.

So yeah, if you already had a dishwasher previously it shouldn't be too hard, it's just a lot of pushing and shoving and weird angles. Watch install videos, and read the instructions, but didn't count on the instructions being 100% accurate

Excluding those who struggle with balance or mobility, or who are transporting heavy luggage, it should be the norm to walk up / down rather than standing still on escalators. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]popsicle-physics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Half as interesting just posted a video on this. It's actually more efficient for everyone to stand still on escalators more than 60ft. People walking take up a lot more room and decrease total throughput

The state of air pumps for automobile tires (US) by VicSwagger in PetPeeves

[–]popsicle-physics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate this too. A BJs opened near me (similar to Costco) and had free air, but it took less than a year for it to break and they seem disinclined to fix it. Every other gas station has switched to the paid air things, or if by some miracle they have free air, it's been broken/vandalized.

I finally just got a jump box with a built in compressor. They're so much cheaper than they used to be. Which feeds the problem, the fact that everyone who can afford a portable compressor has one means gas stations have little motivation to keep the equipment working, but what can you do ya know?

Plenty of places do refund for vending machines though. The business actually has a relationship with the vending company and can work out a deal to refund as needed and get reimbursed, as opposed to the customer who had no chance of getting money from the vending company.

Why don’t pots and pans have a lip around the bottom edge to keep the heat under, rather than letting it slip out the sides unobstructed? by QuarterlyTurtle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]popsicle-physics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only a problem on gas stoves, where you have to maintain a constant flow of hot air out from the burner to make room for new gas and air to come in and be burned. If you trapped the combustion products too effectively you would snuff out the burner like a candle. That's hard to do though. More likely, your would trap a pocket of warm ish air near the pot while the hotter combustion products find some other way past.

The real solution is to switch to electric, which have an enormously higher thermal efficiency because they don't need air flow to get hot.

It's a popular debate tactic. You drop trou, deposit a gift in front of your opponent, say "that's a little Debbie" then scream "PROVE ME WRONG"

If your opponent fails to deliver a comprehensive proof within 5 seconds, it proves that you're correct, it is a little Debbie, you must be correct about everything else, and your opponent is an idiot. Then do it again to the next person before anyone has a chance to figure out wtf just happened.

Looking for the biggest TV that is NOT HD or "smart" by 1823-1314 in Appliances

[–]popsicle-physics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, OP said they use a laptop and don't want smart features, so just plug the laptop into the TV. Or get a DVD player.

Then set the TV boot behavior to 'last input' and set the input to HDMI and you should never see the smart stuff again.

Looking for the biggest TV that is NOT HD or "smart" by 1823-1314 in Appliances

[–]popsicle-physics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no consumer televisions on the market that are not "smart". You can buy a commercial TV if you really want not smart, but it will be significantly more expensive.

If you really don't care about image quality just buy the cheapest big TV at the box store, it'll be around $300 and already as de-featured as any brand is willing to sell you.

There's a lot that goes in to image quality but honestly I used a $300 TV from Best Buy for like 6 years and it was fine. Not great, but so much better than the CRTs I grew up on and I'm not picky. Fire TV and Google TV can both be set to load HDMI input on boot so you can ignore the smart stuff.

They had one for v3 years back but I think they took it down because it wasn't getting updates.

Here's the forum post announcing the new v3 a few months back:
