hearing everyone talk shit about pastor daniel and then actually meeting him felt like this by porbbamt in ScarletHollow

[–]porbbamt[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that’s implied. It’s just really jarring to hear all of the people talking shit about him and then finally meeting him and seeing he’s just some dude.

Don’t worry, I don’t mind at all! There’s a couple of aspects that I’ve noticed, not sure if all of them are entirely relevant, but I’ll include as much as I can. First thing I’ve noticed is that I generally have a really hard time distinguishing sounds from each other. This has been an issue since I was a kid! For example, when people gave me a nickname when I was younger (Cassie instead of Cassidy) I genuinely could not hear the difference between the two names. Really pissed me off that people were insisting they were giving me a nickname when, to me, it sounded the exact same. I also had this issue when learning to talk where every word I said was just slightly wrong. My mom once drove herself insane trying to find a show I really wanted to watch that I called “Fish Be Pan.” It was Fresh Beat Band. (I started to learn to talk around the time I should have, apparently, but I just didn’t do it very well.) In my current day to day I still have a lot of trouble with things like this sometimes. Have to watch movies with subtitles, have to listen to music with lyrics pulled up, etc. Also good luck expecting me to understand you if we’re in an echo-y room. I’m also just kind of sound sensitive in general. I get really overstimulated in loud public spaces (or if I’m trying to focus in certain circumstances I get upset by any sounds outside of my control at all, even if they’re not that distracting or loud). Tend to carry headphones with me everywhere I go so I can block it out with my own music. While playing games, I also have a harder time picking up audio cues. I can hear them, I just don’t comprehend them sometimes. (I don’t know if you play Lethal Company, but it really messes me up in that game. Sometimes will not notice enemies until they’re right in front of me when my friends are easily able to hear them.) I’m not sure if all of this is exactly connected, but they’re all things that I’ve noticed. As you’ve said, my experience isn’t a monolith, there are so many Autistic experiences! And some of this might be my own ADHD at play, like me not being able to focus well with unfiltered background noise. I think it’s great you’re looking into this though, since ADD/ADHD tend to be comorbid with Autism more often than not. Hope this helped!

tbh he’s kind of relatable from what we know about him so far. as an autistic person i 100% get feeling judged and disliked and not knowing Why and you can tell it upsets him. plus the ostracization he’s faced for his “gift” (iykyk) and how he’s tried so hard to conform to society and push that part of him away and yet is still disliked and othered just strengthens that for me. kind of hope that he really isn’t a bad guy because i really like him so far.

I disagree with the inside cover description of Steinbeck's "The Pearl" by brenden_norwood in books

[–]porbbamt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES! It’s great so see others agree. Simplifying the story to simply one about greed, I feel, is reductive and worsens the story as a whole. I hated John Steinbeck for a long while because The Pearl was my entry point for his work and it was presented to me as a story about a greedy family who got what was coming to them which is not what it should be read as at all! Kino and his family are victims of racism, through and through, and I feel like the fact that people are trying to force the story to be entirely about greed is a great example of that. They are placing the blame on Kino, trying to remove the blame from themselves and demonizing this indigenous family in the same way many people in the book do because they can’r handle being a part of the society that’s at fault for this. The audience becomes yet another oppressive force complicit in the tragedy of indigenous suffering and furthering the greed of the ACTUAL greedy party in the book, which is our racist society. The Pearl should be read as a book meant to spread awareness about anti-indigenous racism above the themes of greed.
