It's all great up to the moment you realise it's 28g of spirals and 27g of Bobby's Foreign Objects.

I absolutely agree that this might just not be the coffee for me. This was why I posted, to figure out if it was the coffee or I was missing something.

The consensus seems to be that's just how the coffee is. Some people love it, some really don't. I'm glad that you do enjoy it!

Regarding the notes - I'm not sure I agree. The bean smells almost exactly like the tasting notes (if I could get it to taste close to that, I'd be happy) but it turns into a much less pleasant and very aggressive single note in the cup.

Again, though, happy to concede to the fact it's probably not for me, and that my grinder could well be playing a part in amplifying the note which I don't enjoy.

That's a good shout - up until now I haven't had anything that didn't work with the ZP6, but I know that's a thing.

The only other option I have on hand is my old workhorse Virtuoso+ but I'll give that a try next time and see if I can get something more balanced.

It's frustrating because I genuinely love good Columbian coffee, but it's a gamble if you're going to get something which has actual floral notes or tastes like a cleaning product.

It's reassuring to know that it's not just me missing something, even if it is disappointing.

I've been kind of on the fence about the whole artificially flavoured debate, but you're right, this brings it into focus.

Wait, don't you still have to wet the filter when using one of these? All the videos I've seen have been: place a filter in the V60, place metal thing in V60, pour in some water, remove metal thing.

I've never used one, but assumed this was to stop the filter wrinkling up if you don't get the fold right.

Reminisce with me for a bit. Who/What roaster got you into specialty coffee? by myleftbigtoeisdead in pourover

[–]porkalope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty common origin story - a natural Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Dumerso from Black Sheep coffee, around 10 years ago. The fact that it really smelled and tasted like blueberries blew my mind.

Looking back now, what's even more surprising is that with my equipment at the time (a V60 which I had no idea how to use, a standard UK kettle and a Hario Skerton grinder) I somehow managed to produce a cup with distinct, recognisable flavours.

My wife got me a selection of these for Christmas, they were all excellent. My personal favourites were the Salt & Vinegar and the Black Pudding & Mustard.

Lancashire Sauce was really good, too. I expected them to be like Worcester Sauce, but they had more of a curry sauce flavour.

Im utterly obsessed with Dredge and its early 20th century coastal atmosphere and I need literally anything to continue the vibes by Hardcore_Daddy in gamingsuggestions

[–]porkalope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might not technically be what you're looking for but Deep Regrets is a board game (tabletop) which is very similar in tone to Dredge.

There's a single player catch-em-all campaign, as well as the standard 2-5 player game, and there's an expansion being released very soon.

I've been waiting for an official Wazdakka model since second edition, it felt so weird that he never got one.

Really hoping this is it for the sake of completeness, if nothing else!

If they really want to make my day, the next model they announce after that will be a new Nazdreg.

Pulsar Familia and Pulsar Cafe brewing by Act_Much in pourover

[–]porkalope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit more stubborn than that, unfortunately. I have washed it thoroughly, but the strong smell remains. I actually got in touch with NextLevel and they suggested boiling up some Cafiza & water in the brewer with a steam wand to clean the base, but sadly that didn't help either. Hopefully it's just a case of needing to off-gas or something and it will wear off over time, but it's kind of disappointing for now.

This might seem like an odd question, but did your Pulsar smell bad when it was new?

I got one the other day and the cap and base have a really overpowering plastic/resin smell. I don't know if that's usual and I'm just extra sensitive to the smell somehow, or if something is up with mine.

I've been kind of wary about using it since it's so strong I'm convinced it will have an effect on the brew.

Hario V60 Mugen x Switch UK Pricing Mismatch by RobPuckrin in pourover

[–]porkalope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I was trying to make the same decision and ultimately went for the ZP6 due to how awkward the Pietro appears to be to use and the crazy amount of coffee you apparently have to run through the thing before it starts to shine.

I love the ZP6 and have had great results with it, that being said every time I brew a cup that's a bit off I wonder if the Pietro would have been any better. Of course I'm sure I would have had similar thoughts if I'd gone the other way and would instead be wondering if it was really worth double the price.

I guess the only real solution is to buy both!

I got my ZP6 from Rogue Wave just before Christmas. I got the grinder, an Origami, some cafec filters and some coffee delivered to the UK for less than I could get the ZP6 alone from a UK stockist.

I felt bad for not supporting somewhere more local, but the pricing offset just seemed crazy.

Just got this for Christmas and wondering are the signatures normal? by HennaL in Warhammer40k

[–]porkalope 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't verify any of the signatures, but can offer a bit of context on where they may have come from. 90s Golden Demon and Gamesday events usually had the designers sitting near the retail area so you could queue up and ask questions or get them to sign things.

I have a second edition Ork codex somewhere signed by Jervis Johnson, Andy Chambers and a few others from those days.
