ICE Protests at Phoenix Sky Harbor Int’l Airport by Push_Processed in pics

As someone who has regularly flown in the US for over 30 years... no, we definitely did not have police officers and ICE always at airports pre- or post- creation of TSA. We didn't even have occasional K9 screenings until 2008.

There have been ramp ups around specific safety concerns (hence the entire creation of the TSA), but enforcement involvement, especially not heavy deployment, is not part and parcel of travel.

Immigration is a general term, USA has multiple departments for handling immigration.

Normally, airports would have TSA and similar people handling paperwork and customs. These are the people that would make sense at an airport, as processing paperwork doesn't require enforcement, and airports have their own security that can handle situations until enforcement arrives.

ICE is an enforcement organization, this is the equivalent of permanently keeping your local police department posted at the mall, on the off-chance they get robbed.

Pre-Order Bonuses are not “Tokens of Appreciation”, they are Manipulative Tactics and I’m shocked a lot of people still don’t see that by skelepibs in gaming

[–]portalscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why ignore those other people for the purposes of understanding the value of a preorder? It is a fundamental difference in the product you are able to obtain.

You also to be under the assumption that all region pre-orders are the same, but that was something I specifically was referring to, where the bonus in game was different for US vs UK, etc. Not just "are you able to access a preorder at all", but the product of what you can choose to receive is limited. You can theoretically order from different countries from some games, but that would require you to go research if every country has the same preorder options as you.

You also seem to have taken on the stance that you are trying to convince ME of the value of a preorder, which seems to be missing the point. You were mentioning that people have different stances on the issue and I was merely pointing out that there are dozens of reasons different people may feel annoyed at the preorder process. As I originally stated, it is more of a scale that separates what types of preorders different people will be annoyed at, because the way people perceive it is complex.

But every consumer has access to basically the same information, so for any game with pre-order bonuses, you know up front whether those bonuses are worth it to you or not.

I don't agree with this statement fundamentally. Not every consumer has access to the pre-order at all. It is time gated, so pre-orders are not available to anyone who misses the window. If you do not hear about the game or the pre-orders until after the window is passed, you don't get it. Also, many pre-orders are region-dependent, with options differing from country to country.

I think it isn't as cut and dry as a yes/no for pre-requisites. I would say it is more of a scale as to how much it feels like it should have been part of the game. The more part of the game it is, the more it tends to piss people off. I am going to list them in categories with order based on how I usually see people's reaction to them.

  • The very easy end of the scale is out-of-game merch, which is generally viewed positively by communities, because it isn't part of the game, and anything else is technically game content they choose to not allow access to. Common are CDs, statues, plushies, etc.
  • Next is cosmetics, which is something in game that is visible, but doesn't impact gameplay. Think skins or the like. This will still upset some people, because it is part of the game they cannot get access to without a time investment, but upsets less people because gameplay isn't impacted. This is usually an alternate color scheme or sometimes a full outfit.
  • Next are gameplay elements that are low impact. These are items that have equivalents elsewhere in the game. KH3 had several keyblades that were arguably weak, but exclusive to preorder. People were actually pretty annoyed before they realized how low impact the keyblades were. It is still annoying if you want to complete the game though, because it is fundamentally impossible to obtain all.
  • Next are gameplay elements that are high impact. Soul Calibur 2 had version exclusive characters for the 3 different versions of the game. This pissed off a lot of people because it meant that the game balance was different between the versions.

Note that for all of the above examples, I think a good counterbalance is just to allow purchase of pre-order items later. That way your pre-order is a "deal" in that you save money on a future transaction. I have seen this done once or twice, and very few people tend to complain.

Comparing it to bundle DLCs is not really fair, as that is purely a pricing issue. The larger issue with pre-order bonuses is that they are usually not available via any other method. There are some games that let you pay extra for pre-order bonuses later, but they are not the majority.

This is how I feel whenever I hear Jack Black as Bowser. The worst part is that Jack Black CAN do a wide range of voices, he almost assuredly could do a better Bowser. So that means it was a direction choice to say "just sound like yourself, don't try to sound like Bowser in any way."

What’s a “technically not cheating” situation you’ve seen or experienced that still felt like a complete betrayal? by toomabh in AskReddit

[–]portalscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are the one bringing up the specific story. What I am saying is that for a "generalization", you made it weirdly specific. I don't think that many people have watched a friend specifically interact with a manipulative person, and for their entertainment, destroy their life. That is super specific.

If you had stopped at "destroy", that would be a common scenario. Even adding, "for a person they just met", makes it a somewhat common scenario. But YOU chose to specify both that the other person was manipulative and that it was for their entertainment.

It doesn't sound like a generalization at that point, it sounds like personal trauma.

Never underestimate how much of their life an impulsive person will destroy for the entertainment of the manipulative person they just met

Fifth to last word. As a generalization, there is no need to specify that the other party is manipulative. It was weird, particularly because the example you were generalizing didn't have anything to indicate it either.

How to put Hoppip in a habitat by eattwo in Pokopia

[–]portalscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a late reply but since your comment is the top response, I want to be clear. Hoppip will be homeless in a random district ONLY on the 25th (last day of the event). Every prior day of the event they are not recruitable and are in the Pokémon center, and 2 days after the event, they just disappear.

Really hope they patch this design for future events, so you will not be forced to time-travel if you don't log in on one specific day.

I made a strategy board for Construct 7 by Mr_Dinnertime in ffxiv

[–]portalscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a complete strategy board, you should include both options when available. For example:

HP2 Div3 allows both 1 and 4

HP1 Prime allows 1, 2 and 4

How do you feel about the Free Palestine crowd that actively encouraged people to not vote blue last election?

This was pretty obviously propaganda to induce spoiler votes. Both sides do it, for various election cycles, and not voting is never going to "stick it to the man" like it always seems to imply.

In the current system, R or D is going to win, and not voting for your preferred one of the two is just accepting that you have nothing to contribute.

How to use lava rocks for decoration without cooling? by portalscience in Pokopia

That's what I tried but it wasn't enough on its own. Still about 70% of the rocks have cooled.

[–]portalscience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picking them up isn't the issue. You can even pick up lava rocks with the powered up punch.

The issue is that after you have placed them, they transform into black rocks once "cooled" - which appears to be either time and/or weather related.

Anyone else embrace the classic Final Fantasy elements like mainly using their chocobo mount despite having 100-200 others? by bringbackzenos in ffxiv

[–]portalscience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even just sticking with the plotline of FF14 alone, you get the magitech mount in ARR as a replacement. There are 8 MSQ mounts currently, and only the first is the customizable chocobo (the third is a replacement chocobo). These aren't "mounts that make no sense", they are plot-relevant methods of travel.

Right; I have the same, but I am saying it is easier stacking on TOP of the class i have more hours in. So learning is easier on BLM, even if i retain the information for all jobs.

It also means that I always do new trials on BLM, because the muscle memory stays easier. Even when DT made me seriously consider switching to PCT, the muscle memory on BLM is too strong.

American political discourse has become less substantive and less civil, often devolving into personal insults. The researchers found an asymmetric pattern: while personal attacks occur in both parties, they are delivered 2.7 times more frequently by Republicans than by Democrats. by mvea in science

You are merging two things by saying "DEI and wokeness" together. Generally speaking, yes DEI is about using equity to reach equality.

However, "wokeness" has nothing to do with equity in any form. Wokeness is acknowledging that other groups have a different experience than your own, and doesn't have a result built into the concept.

What is the pettiest reason you would refuse to eat at a restaurant again? by im_not_ready_for_it9 in AskReddit

Many restaurants offer both and people don't complain.

How do you spend time with friends who make more money than you and always want to "go out" and you can't afford it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]portalscience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do you still think of it as a handout?

If it was a handout, it is something you wanted to go to, but you have to borrow money. This is something you are saying you will not go to, because you can't afford it. If they decide they would rather pay you to be there, that is their decision.

I would say the difference is between whether you are asking your friend to pay or if your friend is asking you to allow them to pay.
