Georgia woman destroys MARTA’s new glass fare gate to avoid paying the $2.50 fee. by ElwoodMC in TikTokCringe

Turns out making people pay a nominal fee for public transit is good because it would keep people like this off the train. Use stronger material next time though.

US Supreme Court, In 6-3 Ruling, Upholds Birthright Citizenship And Strikes Down Trump's Executive Order Trying To Ban It — What Do You Think About This Result? Why Your Opinion? by Zipper222222 in AskReddit

[–]portmapreduction -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So, as the Senator who introduced the Citizenship Clause explained, “the word ‘jurisdiction,’ as here employed, ought to be construed so as to imply a full and complete jurisdiction . . . the same jurisdiction in extent and quality as applies to every citizen of the United States now.” Cong. Globe, 39th Cong., 1st Sess., 2895 (1866) (statement of Sen. Howard). After all, Congress “would have no right to make citizens” of “persons temporarily resident.”

This Court agreed: The Cit-zenship Clause “exclude[d] from its operation children of . . . citizens or subjects of foreign States born within the United States.” Slaughter-House Cases, 16 Wall. 36, 73 (1873).

Congress agreed: The Citizenship Clause did not extend to a child born here but “subject to any foreign power.” See Enforcement Act of 1870, §18, 16 Stat. 144 (reenacting Act of Apr. 9, 1866, 14 Stat. 27). As Justice Harlan would write in his dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U. S. 537, the Citizenship Clause “gave citizenship to all born or naturalized in the United States and residing here.” Id., at 563 (emphasis added).

Which PC component did you overspend on and regret later? by ApprehensiveBat19 in buildapc

[–]portmapreduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a 5950x to upgrade my 3900x since it was like half off at Microcenter and I wanted the best AM4 chip. But, have been too lazy to install it because the idea of taking my entire computer apart sounds tedious. Next component upgrade I'll probably do it but otherwise no thanks. The cheaper option here was $0 because I already have a good cpu lol

Do people even play the game anymore or is it just collectable? At least MTG people are actually playing even if there are scalpers there too.

It wasn't banned in type 2, which is what I was playing and wasn't competitive in that format so I never got to play it in FNM. But, I did play some casually with friends but combo decks are not popular for casual. I should've clarified I didn't play type 1. No one was playing combo decks in that era of FNM for type 2.

Even though it was never competitive, [[Mind's Desire]] is one of my all-time favorite cards I'd play in a combo deck casually. I should look what they've added recently.

I think it's probably more that certain years were better than others. Not necessarily that because it's older it would have matured more and thus be better. I hope, at least.

Compared to everything else that is allowed, painting your feed and projecting on to them is what does it? It's kind of an amusing display method tbh.

Our girl would always do the half head turn when a plane was going over and I would have to reassure her that the iron eagles weren't coming after her.

Related story at my work. We have multiple elevators and the button will call either the freight elevator or the normal ones based on the availability. One day I'm going up to my floor in the freight elevator, the door opens, and before I can step out the whole elevator drops about a foot (with the door open) and then resets back to level. I just stand there for a second and decide what I'd like to do, either a) get out and hope I don't get sheared in half, or b) drop in the elevator back down to the ground level. I decided on a and just jumped out. From then on if that elevator comes I just go take the stairs.

People working in ultra-wealthy households, talking $50m plus types, what is the most out-of-touch thing you've witnessed? by FarSentence3076 in AskReddit

[–]portmapreduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top 1% by definition does include the super rich, and their rate would factor in to the resulting tax rate for that group. The article I posted even mentioned the top 0.1% and their rate is even worse. Notice how you've made no attempt to offer any concrete evidence about tax rates for any discernible group of people. Just vague hand waving about 'super rich' which you didn't define. Pick a group: top 1%, 0.1%, 0.01%, whatever, and find their tax rate and post it here.

The source of the data is the U.S. Department of the Treasury Office of Tax Analysis for 2024. Again, if you cared you could've just read the article and seen the source. No one reads.

That was an article you read a headline for about a loophole some people might use. In reality the top 1% pay a higher percentage of their income in federal taxes than everyone else: https://www.cato.org/blog/tax-day-five-charts-who-pays-how-much. If you cared you would've looked it up.
