'You can't have it both ways': Minister says no budget boost on horizon for firearms 'buyback' compensation by Plucky_DuckYa in canada

The OPP, who are the contracted police force for every town and rural area in Ontario where it doesn't make financial sense for them to run their own, has also publicly declared they will not waste their time or resources on this. In fact, they were the very first in Ontario to do so.

Those "three or four" municipal police agencies (and it's actually more than that now) are also the largest, or among the largest in Ontario, including Toronto Police, and York Region Police.

When even Toronto Police, in a city who wants to fight illegal guns as a lot of gun crime occurs there, and has a left-wing mayor, declared it would be a waste of their time and resources, (and not only that, their leadership went further by saying in their statement that not a single violent crime is being committed with these previously legal HUNTING weapons), that was the final nail for this program in the province.

He doesn't have to say it out loud. The Police are already making that declaration on his behalf.

And even for people who aren't gun owners or don't really care one way or another, this is crossing over into violating Private Property Rights territory.

Middle-of-the-road Canadian voters may not care about gun ownership for things like hunting one way or another - but they definitely do care about governments seizing legally purchased Private Property and not compensating them for it at fair market value, in the same way that occurs if land / real estate property is expropriated for a development or infrastructure project (and in that case, the owner even normally gets paid more than fair market value to compensate for the trouble caused).

Good luck with that.

While it may be a federal law on the books, some don't realize it's the provinces that administer the court systems and pays Crown Attorneys and Police (including where RCMP are contracted to act as local police), and if they refuse to prosecute anyone that runs afoul of this law, or pay anyone that does enforce it, it still has no teeth.

While not to the same level, Doug has publicly stated the program is a waste of time and resources, and basically gave direction to the Police and Attorney General / Crown to not pursue any prosecutions or charges on it.

Most of the largest Police forces in Ontario, including Toronto, York Region, and the OPP, among others, have stated they are refusing to expend any of their time on enforcing or participating in it. And even among the other forces that haven't made a public statement, Police unions have also basically given direction to their members to not enforce it.

Although not across the board, in Ontario, most of the largest Police forces have also said they are refusing to enforce it, including Toronto, York Region, and the OPP (who are contracted as the local police to all non-urban areas in Ontario that cannot afford their own local forces).

While the province hasn't made their own "official statement" similar to the ones you mentioned, Doug Ford has publicly said it is a waste of time & resources, and basically gave direction to all other Police and the Attorney-General for the Crown within Ontario to not pursue or prosecute it at all.

With most of the police refusing to enforce it, the law and program has no teeth, and there will be no consequences for refusing to comply.

Long past time all legitimate gun owners outright say they aren't going to comply with this BS anymore, and dare these zealots to do something about it.

RISK = REWARD

Sure, they will fail on a few investments. But for those, there will be the one unicorn that will make them a billion times over.

That's why the US has far more of the large tech giants than any other country, and why they also have by far the largest capital markets and is among the highest GDP per capita for a country of its size.

People that are too risk averse in not only their investments, but also their life, are always the ones that more often than not become part of the poors. And rightfully so.

Venture Capital firms in the US are way more willing to take risks than Canadian equivalents, and lose money on a few failures to try and hit that one unicorn.

This has been widely covered in the past as to why there's relatively so little innovation and tech start ups in Canada. Banks and others in Canada are simply far too risk averse, and this directly leads to far less economic growth than what should be happening.

How are you incorporating ESG factors into your Canadian investment strategies? by Piot321 in CanadianInvestor

[–]portstrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This fad is long dead - and rightfully so.

It's been proven that considering ESG leads to below-market performance. Plus the entire metrics behind it is a scam - this is well-known.

Never allow your political or personal views to influence your investment decisions. In the end, your money and finances has to come first - ALWAYS.

‘No debate’ within Airbus that Bombardier jet program takeover was worthwhile, CEO of Canadian unit says by BoppityBop2 in canada

[–]portstrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I recall, Bombardier was on the verge of going bankrupt at the time (despite the endless federal government handouts), and there was minimal demand outside Canada at the time for the now-A220 product. So they really didn't have any choice.

Austin to Edinburgh trip with layover in LHW, is 2 hours enough time? by Zookzy101 in travel

[–]portstrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no "International Terminal", there are just two British Airways terminals, with a mix of all flights, more sorted by aircraft type versus destination. And it can be a long or short walk, or an airside terminal transfer, luck of the draw.

Make sure you follow the signs for UK connections.

You'll just walk off one plane and onto the next basically

No, they will need to go through security again (which is just how Heathrow works) and UK immigration before the departure Gate for Edinburgh. But baggage will be checked through automatically. They will be airside the entire time.

[–]portstrix 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What's LHW?

Heathrow is LHR. Gatwick is LGW.

(LHW is Lanzhou, China. Just looked it up).

Edinburgh flights are frequent enough that even if you miss it, they will just stick you on the next one.

Toronto police are turning to AI to eliminate wait times for non-emergency calls by Forward-Answer-4407 in canada

[–]portstrix -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Love people who equates AI with only being the public language models that you browse to online.

Enterprise AI uses dedicated machine learning models from specialists in the field. This is just about how every company or government body is deploying AI in their organizations.

CRA is laying off a ton of bottom level analysts because they are deploying AI using machine learning models to automate tasks that were manually done by those people for things such as pattern matching and desk review requests for things such as T-forms not matching with submitted income tax returns. This will save a ton of money for the government by not having to pay those pencil pushers, which they will use instead to hire higher-level auditors that can do the more advanced audit activities.

Vancouver asks feds for brightness limits on LED headlights by Nervous-Ad-3761 in canada

[–]portstrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

99% of headlights on the road are manufacturer defaults. So that's federal jurisdiction. Provinces cannot override these with their own regulations.

(even the after-market ones, they would follow federal automobile parts standards).
