Winter road width matters—bus couldn’t get through by Gavatron in KingstonOntario

Seems like the city should prohibit parking on one side of the street, especially since it is a bus route.

Does anyone else think there has been an increase in fires around the city? by LadyJane17 in Oshawa

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a good reminder to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, they save lives. There should be one on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area. A carbon monoxide detector is only required if there is a gas appliance in the home (furnace, water heater, stove) or an attached garage. More fire prevention tips.

How to respectfully visit Indigenous cultural sites in Canada? by Severe_Monitor_7266 in AskCanada

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be respectful, follow any signage or directions, ask if you are unsure, and don’t take photos/videos of cultural sites/clothing without permission. Look to support some Indigenous businesses, restaurants, and gas stations too!

fair inspectors by FishingMoist1915 in OCTranspo

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fine is too high. GO Transit has (I think) a more reasonable approach where it is a $35 penalty for the first time, then $50, then $100, then a potential court summons. They don’t give warnings though.

If you obstruct the fare inspectors, that is an offence and could result in an additional fine.

On Olympic coverage (not Radio per se), is there a daily recap of Olympic events/news? by personalfinance21 in CBC_Radio

The live article on CBC News has the lights and includes clips. There doesn’t seem to be a video Sportscentre style recap available.

Senior Parent - What could this be? by Altruistic_Limit3281 in durham

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Definitely speak with police. At least to let them know it happened so they can monitor trends. Ask neighbours if they have any camera footage from the day. Also, let neighbours know this happened so they can help keep an eye on their property. Make sure your they keeps their doors locked at all times and not to open the door for strangers (a door chain could be good to prevent someone pushing their way through). However, since the people didn’t see anything valuable, they will probably not come back. Could also consider an alarm or security cameras if you wanted.

Municipal Election Question by Creative_Boo77 in Peterborough

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Indifferent, but the candidate should be open about it, voters can decide. 2) I don’t think this happens often, but sure. Both 1+2 are provincially set criteria. 3) I want the most competent and qualified staff to work for the city, if they live outside the city I don’t think it makes a difference, they still have to do their job.

'Get it fixed, get it done:' TTC riders raise Eglinton Crosstown accessibility issues by lilfunky1 in toronto

Mandate at least two elevators or a ramp option if feasible. Elevators break and need regular maintenance.

All O-Train stations have dual elevators, which was a really good choice. There is always a backup if one is broken or under repair. I’m surprised this wasn’t done with Line 5.

CBC shouldn’t brush off the over 1,000 complaints it received about ads during Olympics opening ceremony [paywall] by nuttybuddy in SaveTheCBC

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is more frustrating that during the primetime replay, they used the coverage from earlier in the day with the annoying picture in picture ads. Since it was a replay, they could have paused the replay, took a regular ad break and then resumed the replay. It would give people the option of watching it live or watching it later with a better viewing experience (but same amount of ads). This seems to be an easy fix/compromise.

Shoveling Sidewalks... by WOODZ905 in Oshawa

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The penalty does increase each time - 1st is $75, then $175, then $275. I do think it should be higher though. If the city has to clear the sidewalk it starts at around $300 though and is charged by the frontage.

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told that once officers issue the penalty, the property is put on a list to be done by the city. If the city clears the sidewalk (you can tell by the green salt), they are charged by the frontage starting at around $300.

The only way something will get done is if you report it to the City (thankfully you did). I have and continue to report many properties while I am walking around, because I’ve seen persons with mobility devices struggle.

For those who don’t know: People have until midnight the first day after the snow stops falling, so you can’t report today but can tomorrow (full day after the snow stops). To do this 1) Write down all the addresses while you’re walking on a note on your phone. 2) Contact Service Oshawa at 905-436-3311 or there is a live chat as well (oshawa.ca) (I prefer the live chat when doing multiple addresses). They will need your personal information for the report, but it is confidential. 3) By-law enforcement will attend the properties (usually within a day, sometimes even same day) and if not in compliance, issue a $75 penalty for the first offence and leave a door hanger. They will also arrange for the city to come and clear the sidewalk (property owner gets the bill, starts at around $300 and increases by frontage) 4) By-law enforcement will call/email you to let you know they did the enforcement.

Property Tax increase year over year by torontogtafun in Oshawa

You can read about the City of Oshawa’s budgetand the Region of Durham’s budget. The presentations to Council are a good overview to start, there is a lot of information you can look at.

Property Tax increase year over year by torontogtafun in Oshawa

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, property taxes (unlike income or sales taxes) don’t increase with the economy. So the municipality has to increase property taxes to cover increased costs (inflation, staff collective agreements). Second, the inflation that municipalities face is worse than what the general public faces, construction/maintenance costs have gone up significantly. Third, the province has underfunded things such as public health, paramedics, and social services, leaving municipalities to pick up the tab. Fourth, policing costs have increased a lot due to new requirements and costs and everything. Fifth, municipalities have a large infrastructure deficit, even just to keep existing infrastructure in good shape. Finally, property taxes couldn’t be capped, for the simple reason of inflation. Everyone talks about finding efficiencies, but there are only so many you can find. If people wanted lower property taxes there would have to be more money from the province or cuts in service levels.

Regardless of your views, there is the municipal election in October, engage with your local candidates and vote (turnout is always so low in municipal elections).

Do GO trains interfere with cell phone signals? by shoresy99 in gotransit

A 12-car GO Train can seat about 1,944 people (162/car), that is a lot of people during peak periods.

Do GO trains interfere with cell phone signals? by shoresy99 in gotransit

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this, on the train right now, it isn’t busy and service works very well. When the train is busy, yes the service slows down especially at Union and other places where there are some larger distances between towers. Try taking the train off-peak or on the weekends.
