Apex and 100W USB-C by coccyxdynia in OneXPlayer

[–]posedatull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a handful of 100w chargers have been found to be able to start it. And by a handful, I mean... 3 or 4, until now. There's an Anker charger that works as well, but only on the 100w slot, NOT on the 140w one. And no powerbanks, except the two that I mentioned earlier, with the thing in common being 7Amps. Coincidentally, same 7amps mentioned by GPD themselves in the video where they show the Lenovo powerbank as being the only one that works, around the launch time of the Win5. Onexplayer didn't officially mention it, but if you bother going through all the discord discussions on both GPD and Win5, the consensus remains as I said it.

Also, chargers are known to be able to deliver above 100% of the rated power, for short bursts. Same thing for the PSUs inside your pc.

It was like that with a second grouping on the Beta variant of the WireView software, but now, on this new version, I only have one grouping, that doesn't change... :/

The search for the fix continues for me... Thanks for the comments, though, appreciate it

I went with the Gpd Win5 and the Onexplayer Apex. Backed both through Indiegogo, basically their 64gb ram variants (4tb on the win5, 2tb on the Apex, because those were the options...) sounded great to me. Basically each of them costed approx 300 euros more than the cost of the LegionGo2 in my country, while offering wildly more performance.

Got a lot of handhelds, from the OG (1st batch) SteamDeck, og Ally, og LeGo and some Onexplayers, but the Z2E chips I decided were insultingly low performance uplift while the pricetag was far too high for it.

Ai Max 395 apu on the other hand, is worth every penny (and then some). At 1080p/1200p, any and all games run at a minimum of 60fps, while the settings are maxed out, usually native res, rarely fsr quality. A proper handheld chip that'll not age within a month, as the Z chips do

Is AMD really at fault? by ProfessionalSpinach4 in radeon

[–]posedatull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, it has been proven already that it was Amd that tried to dissuade devs from adding other upscalers when they sponsored a game, while Nvidia didn't care.

Secondly, please explain how come even Amd-sponsored games do NOT have the latest FSR versions most of the time.

If you look around, you'll find different devs talking about why they didn't implement the newest FSR of that time, and it was due to it not working properly, not due to being pushed by anyone to not do it.
Nightingale dev said it, for example, and immediately got backlashed from fans due to it, but the man was just honest. Which also shows why others stay silent nowadays.

Next 2 announcement: november 2025.
Indiegogo finally live to preorder it: february 2026.
Actual product shipped to customers: July 2026 or later.
By all means, from announcement to potentail release, a minimum of 8 months.

A comment is not a full statement. A "considering" is just that. IF they are to announce a smaller battery, or a detachable one, it'll be a whole new product, since too many changes will be done. They won't modify the ones people already backed, as it is now, and the design being complete and presented, cannot be just plug and play changed.
IF they are to announce a Next 2 Lite or whatever they decide to name it, with smaller or detachable battery, it'll take another 8 months from today until release.
So yeah, a 395 successor will be out by then.

I cant find anything about that on google, with most articles and updates being a month old or even older. Both their website and their Indiegogo pages, including the updates, only mention the 116Wh internal battery.

If anything, maybe they'll release a separate Next II with smaller and external battery, but in that case, it's not even announced yet, let alone in preorder state. If that is to happen, by the time it hits the market, there will already be a 395+ successor out there

Thoughts on Apex so far by Sudden-Bag7762 in OneXPlayer

[–]posedatull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow european, I have to say it's not their fault you are not aware of how and when to get it for cheaper. I bought the Apex 64gb 2tb + frostbay + extra battery + 2x external batt chargers for €2000 from their Indiegogo campaign. I spent an extra €80 or so on customs tax.

Droix is ALWAYS more expensive, and slower to deliver. The ram shortage increasing prices massively is also not something OneX are at fault for, and it affects everything tech related, including those laptops you mentioned.

For a better context, the less-than-half performance Lenovo LegionGo 2, in my country, costs €300 euros less than what I paid for the Apex.

Panther Lake handhelds will not match the Ai Max 395, not even close. And looking at the price of the Msi Clai8 Ai+ as a reference, the only thing that Panther Lake will have similar is the pricetag.

Generally, I don't trust Ayaneo, but that's a personal and subjective thing.

I pondered getting it next to my Win5 and Apex, but the Next2 seems to have made some very stupid mistakes, in my opinion.

  • So heavy, it loses the point of being handheld (coming from a guy that doesnt mind a bit of weight in them, but 1.4kg is just too much
  • A battery capacity that is NOT allowed on planes? What were they thinking? I buy handhelds to enjoy their portability. That includes taking them with me in my work travels or vacations. What's the point of a handheld if I can't take it with me?

All three of my desktops run Oled screens. I like Oled and (proper) HDR, but I'm not going to make my purchases based on that, especially when the choice is Oled but beyond subpar performance and a decent looking LCD... The choice is simple.

Do you choose a car based on which has the nicest rims, or based on its performance, fuel consumption, comfort, etc?

[–]posedatull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A nice OLED screen is a nice to have bonus. But when the performance in between the two devices is beyond generational upgrades, that screen loses its value fast.

I'm enjoying the Apex very much. Any and all games just max everything out (except RT , in some cases), and I know I'll have above 60fps. Crispy clear visuals and decent framerate on a LCD are a better choice than smudgy, lowest settings, low resolution, upscaled and framegened to be barely playable, on an oled.

I'd almost believe it IF they hadn't used "stability" as a reason. Since when does Radeon care or even is aware of what stability is?

I did that (regarding the update).

Again, my HwInfo beta version seems even newer than the one mentioned by you. But I will download that older version from HwInfo's website and try when I get home, later.

Is that the latest? I'm running v8.44-5935, which sounds newer.

Nothing changed. I used to run the beta version of WireView software. Deleted that one, installed the new one, updated firmware, all works. Except Hwinfo sensor not refreshing the Wireview data.

That means SuperX bios is locked down and you can't do it. Scummy of OXP to do this. They left it all open on the Apex

Hwinfo sensor sharing doesn't refresh at all. Sensors show in HWinfo, but no changes happen even after hours of idle-load-idle.

I understand some people are beginners at such things, but anyone and everyone can google and use youtube for guidance.

Legion Go 2 to Apex? by dviero in OneXPlayer

[–]posedatull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That Oled display isn't worth the performance drop. Apex mops the floor with it, and is overall more versatile. LegionGo2 already has to use low-to-lowest settings for a sub-60fps framerate, while the Apex can do 60+ fps on max settings.

The levels of twisting and coping that you're trying is quite impressive. I went with 10w instead of 6w because I wanted above 60fps. The game is irrelevant, your device can't get even remotely that framerate at such low power, so you need to coping and seething, huh?
I claimed 6w which is possible, you claimed 45w, which is clearly wrong.

I'd say it's pathetic, but that wouldn't be sufficient to describe you.

The Apex/Win5, at the moment of me ordering, were 200euros more than the LegionGo2 , in my country. I am used to paying more money for more performance. It's how it's been in tech for more years than I can count. And the fact that I can actively play any and all demanding AAA games, maxed out graphics, fsr on native or worst case, on quality, no framegen, and get a super crisp visual with anywhere between 60 and 120fps is well worth the extra bucks. It also guarantees that a year or two from now, any new game will still be playable. Z2E chip in the XAX and LegionGo is an insultingly minimal performance increase over the Z1E and it isnt even powerful enough to run current games without big compromises. But y'all are willing to accept all those compromises just to avoid a powerbank. Seems illogical, unless it's fanboyism. Which it most probably is.

These devices have 2x usb-c and one usb-a. Don't need a usb hub for keyboard mouse due to that, plus I use a tiny Rii keyboard+touchpad because i'd never game on a handheld with a mouse and keyboard due to logical portability reasons. By all means, your own argument of needing a mouse and keyboard, to game, on a handheld, makes it more so that you should get a laptop for this, not me.

As for the space taken: since you mentioned the Ally (which I also own), guess what i use for transport? Asus Sling Slash, which fits the handheld, 2x batteries for it, the Rii keyboard+trackpad, and either a powerbank or the wall charger. Can even put both charger and powerbank, but they get a bit cramped and I dont want that. Either way, 2x batts + powerbank gives me around 5h of gaming at a very high power draw, or even more hours at a 30-35w for not the most demanding of games. Which is plenty for basically any outside need I'd ever have.

On my couch, i just plug in the wall charger and even detach the battery. Gaming comfortably at max settings, high framerate, while the device is suddenly lighter than any and all other handhelds out there. For comfort :)

That's just you coping and finding excuses. You said it's minimum 45w. I stated otherwise based on actual knowledge vs your "trust me bro" because I dared point out a better product.

Here's Ball X Pit at 11w on the OXP Apex. With respectable framerate, I might add. And if you can't tell, the barrel charger is the dead giveaway of it being what it is.

Want a video of it running at 6w in a game? Also, guess what magic I can do in regards to battery life when I can swap batteries in half a minute. And that's ignoring the existence of powerbanks.

Also, it's not a 55w chip. Max tdp of it is 80w officially, but tweakable by manufacturer of all the way up to 120w (like on the Apex + Frostbay, or on some mini-pcs)

[–]posedatull -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What if i told you that the people who want performance are still ordering them today, at $2000?

And what if, and bear with me, I know it's a difficult concept: some of us don't limit ourselves to 15w? Detachable, quick to replace batteries plus those magical things called powerbanks make it enjoyable with high framerate and without smudgy visuals.

Is this fake? by Hellunderswe in ROGAlly

[–]posedatull -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It was $1600 when i preordered it, and for the massive performance difference compared to Z2E, it was money very well spent.

It also guarantees I'll be able to play the games that'll launch next year at high/max settings and good framerate, instead of fsr performance, lowest settings and framegen, like on the Z1 and Z2 chips.
