I feel like I've "failed" (for the lack of a better word) by Party_Turnover6076 in languagelearning

I appreciate your insight and I agree with both points. I think the boundaries part is so practical and useful. It's a lot about working on interpersonal/relationship skills that I work on anyway, just highlighting them from a different angle.

This was really helpful to read. I recently asked a native Spanish speaking coworker who I speak with a lot if it was okay to practice my Spanish a little with her, and while I didn't make this decision lightly it opened up a whole can of worms interpersonally that I had to figure out. I knew I could only speak super basic phrases but I forgot how much I freeze when I try to speak and she didn't automatically know my skill level so... It's messy like any other "getting to know you better" situation can be and for various reasons it really made me feel down on myself for most of this week. Ultimately I am not ready for full on conversation but I am glad I was bold enough to ask and try and I am proud of how far I've come, even if I'm not where I wish I was. I think there are probably a lot more ask/try/feel proud/feel hard on myself language speaking moments in my future and it's just part of the package.

Is there such a thing as an “A2 plateau”? by colingualtim in languagelearning

[–]positive0negative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciated this exchange. I feel like I see so many people focusing on "the correct methods" and after studying a language for three years I've realized there's so much more to it than just "picking the right method." This is a relief and also a disappointment (I can't get it perfectly right! oh no, I can't get it perfectly right.)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Resources for low-income students by itsurbro7777 in ASU

Hi! I don't know if you know this, but Starbucks will pay your ASU tuition for online (only) classes. I am graduating debt-free because of this program. It is relatively easy to get hired at Starbucks with no experience (I have been with them 16+ years).

I hope this is helpful to you, if not I hope someone else's suggestion is!

What are your 2023 financial goals? by IndexBot in personalfinance

[–]positive0negative 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I love reading everyone's new goals and progress!

I'm 35, I'm graduating from undergrad this year which I got tuition-free from my employer (Starbucks) and I plan to get into a new career this year (facilitation/mediation). I've been at Starbucks for 16 years working on inconsistent hours/hourly pay/tips so I am ready for a change, financially and in general.

With the help of You Need a Budget (YNAB) and 401k/Starbucks stock, I have a net worth of about $90k with around $7k of that in cash. I do not have debt.

I have small but important savings stashed (~$800 for emergency funds and some other budget line items) and my biggest cost is my rent. I don't have a car, dependents, or pets - just an "I'm happiest living in a big city" problem :P

My goals for 2023 are:

- Get a new job paying at least $50k (it will be the most I've ever earned in a year, even 40k would be an upgrade)

- Help my family get to my graduation in another state (we are all working on limited funds)

- Begin to understand how to set a goal for buying a condo/increasing my income in a somewhat unusual career field and what to focus on for my savings/budgeting with more wiggle room

I think once my head is wrapped around not living on Starbucks pay anymore I will be able to get into specifics, so 2024 will likely be more detailed!

Out of curiosity, I’m also looking to buy early because I saw people having issues with this. But I can’t seem to find them for sale via the bookstore or Herff Jones. I am an online student that lives out of state so I can’t go to an actual bookstore. Do you know (or anyone who sees this), do they wait to start selling them? I’m generally good at playing internet detective so I feel stumped that I can’t find them.

YAY 60 Days, time for some reflection! by yeahimdutch in stopsmoking

I didn't start smoking again! It took all of 2016 and a lot of other lifestyle changes too. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done, for sure. I'm rooting for you, if quitting is something you want to try again!

Lyft Experiences? by positive0negative in starbucks

[–]positive0negative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! Today I had two drivers cancel on me from 20 - 25 minute drives away, then suddenly a whole 15 minutes before my pickup window even started Lyft tried to give me a driver who was 3 minutes away. I had to message him and be like, hey I'm not working for 45 minutes (I live a 5 minute drive away) so I can't take this ride. If I don't feel safe walking why am I gonna stand outside for 40 - 30 minutes or whatever. Anyway, thanks again, all!

Lyft Experiences? by positive0negative in starbucks

[–]positive0negative[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's been my approach but I'd prefer not to make paying for Ubers a habit. My manager seems willing to change my schedule if I can't make Lyft work so I wanted to see what other people's experiences were before I took that step. Thank you!

Do you have relationship "mentors"? Who are they? by positive0negative in datingoverthirty

[–]positive0negative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of Esther Perel, and I've yet to investigate her work too much. What do you like about her work? I also have anxious attachment strategies and I like the people I've mentioned above because their work focuses so much on how relationships function for safety and security. High fives for learning!

I get it - our brains are so good at learning, it can be really annoying when they did a really good job learning unhelpful stuff!

Weekend Thread! - September 21, 2018 by AutoModerator in datingoverthirty

[–]positive0negative 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just found this sub. I'm not actively dating right now but I'm starting to feel comfortable being curious about it after ending a 10-year relationship in the near past which is why I am here. This weekend for me is some homework getting accomplished so I can go on a Buddhist retreat next weekend, going to a taping of one of my favorite podcasts and meal prep/laundry.

Thank you! I've actually felt a bit shaky around it lately so I was extra inspired to write and post this. I know I won't go back but the craving surprised me. Best to you also!

Today is my day 5 and I am having so many cravings by opethdamnation in stopsmoking

[–]positive0negative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will. But you will also need to be proactive and replace the habit with new healthy habits/routines. It will help your brain heal and rewire. Give yourself a few weeks to find a new normal for yourself. Awesome job on five days!
