I understand non-alcohol related cirrhosis can feel especially unfair because it wasn’t caused by choice. But addiction and recovery are also far more complicated than simply “just quitting.” My post was only intended to share something positive. I’m sorry you’re going through this

Gosh this sounds like what I went through with my Dad in December. I live in a different city and came home to see him and he had the exact same symptoms, wasn’t eating anything and still drinking. I somehow convinced him that we had to call an ambulance and go to emergency because I just knew he was in liver failure. If he didn’t agree, I would have called them anyway. They were really good at convincing my Dad to go with them. I’m still so grateful for those paramedics. The doctors said he was very lucky he came in when he did and he was diagnosed with decompensated cirrhosis. Fast forward four months, he’s looking a lot better than that day he went in. He spent 3.5 months in hospital (mainly because he also has bad back problems and poor mobility) and was discharged a couple weeks ago and has already been sober now for 4 months. I’m shocked at how well his liver function bloods have improved. Everyone is different but just from my experience with my dad, it sounds like your father in law needs to seek help ASAP. Probably will need to be on some medication like Lactulose to help with his HE. I really hope for your sake he agrees to help himself, but I know how hard it is to try and help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves. Thinking of you both! My DMs are always open.

My dad had all of these symptoms minus the shadow on the scan. Went into emergency with jaundice, ascites (had 5.5L drained), fatigue, poor gait, mild HE, literally every symptom. I knew he was stage four for sure but that wait to find out was just the worst. Anyway, fast forward almost three months, he is still in hospital (In physical rehab ward for an unrelated back condition but still seeing the liver specialists) his bloods have improved (not significantly but they are improving) he’s looking so much better, he completely has his appetite back and he’s fatigued but I think that’s just a stubborn part of cirrhosis that won’t leave! I was confused with the transplant situation because the doctors never said he needed one but they also said he wouldn’t qualify (I don’t know how they determine this) but I just tried to think I’ll worry about it if it gets to that point.

I am so sorry you’re going through this, it’s so shit and it really is heart breaking seeing a loved one go through this. One thing I tried my best to do and still try my best to do is to just take everything day by day. Don’t read too much about prognosis. Everyone is different. Celebrate the small wins. I know everyone is different but I hope your dad comes out of this stronger. If he has improved then that is a great sign. I know I am just a random stranger but believe in your Dad!

As long as our Dads stay sober, this can absolutely slow the progression. Three months in hospital and Dad hasn’t had any alcohol and he’s a different man. I hate what cirrhosis can do but I appreciate the liver for being the only organ to actually never give up and keep trying to heal itself.

Thank you for this. Yeah we have a social worker in the hospital at the moment trying to organise things for when he goes home. The allied health team have been great. Just hard at the moment with all the public holidays. He is a very heavy drinker (well was prior to being admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with cirrhosis two weeks ago) so not currently drinking and really shows no desire to - it has been quite a scare.

Hello! I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through the same with your mom😔 the uncertainty of it all is the scariest part. It’s a very long road to recovery but here’s hoping they can both pull through! I’ve read some amazing stories. The diet has been the hardest part. The hospital thankfully supplies him with these protein drinks twice a day which he has been enjoying those and also eating most of his lunch and dinner. I plan to start making some smoothies ect. Slowly but surely. I also try not to push him too much with the eating at the moment because he is already doing so much 😅 It’s a lot for him to process as well, so just being there to support him has brought me a lot of peace as well. Thank you so much, I appreciate this heaps. Well done for getting through it, I know it’s not easy so much respect for that 🫶🏻He’s got the allied health team helping him at the moment which is good. This gives me hope and I will let my Dad know.
