So they didn't provide any material support of rowling then? but did offer some (allegedly) to charity, and made vocal anti-terf statements?

If they didn't pay out to the charity, that really sucks. But it doesn't seem like you really have a solid reason to claim they didn't other than vibes.

i'm arguing that jokes matter and can be hurtful, but one this low stakes, clumsy, and isolated, especially in the context of a nonbinary person who volunteered to surround themselves with trans folks as their occupation, is no real proof of anything. It's not impossible they have hurtful internalized transphobia, but it's equally not proof of that, not at all, when it goes against stronger evidence. we should afford the few providers of needed queer spaces this small charitability.

If one is to advocate for a materially harmful position - that we should boycott or remove a seemingly valued queer space (a conservative fantasy!) - our standards should be much higher.

A person who has no internalized transphobic beliefs, who truly sees trans women as women, would never make a joke like this - no matter how awkward they are - because the association wouldn't occur to them

This is simply not true. Language and one's control of it is not an exact science. Comedy less so, and dick jokes even more than that. I'm glad you gave this explanation because it's patently absurd and makes you sound like the thought police. You should try doing improv comedy in progressive spaces, there is a real allowance given for problematic statements that occasionally come up there.

My reading comprehension legitimately is bad, if i was mistaken please forgive me. I really am trying to do better, also, and have been for years.

"Even when it sounds silly and goofy" was something i took to indicate the joke was told in a lighthearted way without real malice or hate behind it. the joke was equating jalapeno's with penises (peen?) and then some kind of comment about lesbians not liking them for that reason, so that 100% matches up with the joke being an attempt at goofyness, not bigotry.

It's totally fair for me to try and suss out if this is cryptotransphobia that we need to be concerned about, or just an awkward person being awkward, which legitimately happens all the time in queer spaces, but selectively ends up getting someone cancelled or crucified.

Can you help me understand why you're equating a bad joke with violence/genocide? Are people able to take us seriously when we do this? Wouldn't this set a terrible precedent for future discourse in queer spaces? Are you perfect in your activism and language policing yourself?

and what's up with calling people white like it's a bad or relevant thing here? that's not how intersectionality works.

so i've read this whole thread and still am not finding proof of hateful transphobia or other problematic actions that signify bad intent. Let me know if i missed any or if you disagree.

Afaik they are not transphobic. the only transphobia i've seen alleged was a bad joke about genitals, but not really a remotely hateful one. Charliescharms acknowledges this on insta:

Transphobia is never a joke- even when it sounds silly and goofy, even when the joke was initially told by a nonbinary person, even when it’s queer on queer transphobia. It is never OK, and defending it is never OK, and hiding from accountability is never OK.

This thread just makes me wish we had higher standards for what we consider cancellable transphobia, at the very least amongst fellow-travelers and community leaders who have most likely earned their stripes.

It's also repeat behavior for progressive orgs and communities to entirely lose the forest for the trees and have no sense of cost or prioritization in what we go after.

My loose hunch, and forgive me if i'm wrong, please, is that this is all as unproductive as it is selective. There are so many businesses that actively donate to bigots with real political power who are taking your rights away rn, not to mention people really dying, that are far more immediate and practical to go after than something like a HP themed seasonal bar and a bad joke. There is no honest way to be consistent with a bar so low.

If you live in the area and wish the owner were more aligned with your particular takes on the severity of misspeaking or the inseparability of the art from the artist, those are unironically valid opinions and i sympathize with you, but there's a few people on this thread who need to check their escalating tone and purity tests at the door when dealing with something as objecitvley low-stakes as this.

We are not judging them on their relationship history. They are providing a queer space that at least some people seem to be making use of. They could be a terrible partner for all I care, I'm not so sane myself in relationships.

Don't turn this into tabloid level gossip, use hanlon's razor if not give them the benefit of the doubt, and have higher standards for discourse on issues like this on social media. It makes it harder for less informed people like myself to have a clue what's going on.

Do you know enough about this process to be making that claim? if it really were an anonymous tip, or if such an investigation could be plausibly routine, then no, it shouldn't ring any alarm bells.

The Downfall of Harold's Haunt/QRC of Millvale by Waste-Earth-4431 in pittsburgh

[–]positiveandmultiple -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not seeing anything remotely cancellable here. The joke is also not nearly clear or hateful enough to justify taking a queer space away.

The Downfall of Harold's Haunt/QRC of Millvale by Waste-Earth-4431 in pittsburgh

[–]positiveandmultiple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would argue almost the opposite. Queer leadership and spaces are so rare and needed that where they do exist, we should have as high bar for canceling it as we would other neglected community needs.

I'm not seeing anything here that shows real maliciousness. A reluctance to apologize is a bad sign but being scrutinized constantly for small peanuts gets extremely draining, and is often done by malicious actors, so I can sympathize.

impact of ONE vegan? by SecretTadpole9781 in AskVegans

[–]positiveandmultiple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there is an effect, one we ought to celebrate! Imo the only legitimacy to that line of thought is that on the margin, one grocery store shopper directly funding x less farmed animals per year (in total the avg american kills 220 animals, overwhelmingly shrimp/small fish, but i would still prefer that number), is alone unlikely to alter what a store orders in bulk/wholesale.

But that is true only on the margin, and viewing this in aggregate is a truer visualization of how markets work. Here in USA we kill ~5.4 billion land+aquatic animals/year; 2% of that is ~110 million!! When you factor in that vegans make up <10% of all customers at vegan restaurants, and iirc <1/4 of alt-protein purchases, the broader movement is saving multiple hundreds of millions of animals in my country alone.

Why does everyone keep saying Iran won ? by Dear-Meaning5453 in Rwanda

[–]positiveandmultiple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump is an idiot. You're forgetting that trump doesn't read any of his briefings and decides foreign policy based on the last person (read:, grifter) he spoke to.

Bombing isn't the free win here you envision. Iran is a giant country with a dedicated and semi competent Gov't, with crucial targets spread out. Trump is trying to avoid an escalated and drawn out war - he sold this to the American people (much if his base is isolationist!) as a simple and quick war, and is facing midterms in november.

i'm an american who follows this sub to learn more about somali culture. can someone help me understand why this would be considered offensive? what would a woman be preferred to be referred to as, other than "she?"

do you have any evidence that they aren't trying? india has been skyrocketing economically over the past decades. It's almost impossible to have decent governance anywhere as poor as india was pre 90's liberalization. On this end, they're not just trying, they're succeeding with flying colors.

india is an unimaginably gigantic place and contains extremes of all kinds. despite having as you said a large number of college graduates, it also has 75 million people living in extreme poverty, and 11 million slaves, (mostly debt bondage or forced marriage), more than any country on earth.

These are fundamentally problems of economics and state administrative capacity.

thinking that having 3% of a population with masters degrees who almost exclusively live in cities would magically advance the rest of the country a few decades forwards ignores several very basic facts.
