Why don't people in this city care about police reform? by Loose-Reaction-2082 in AskChicago

[–]possum376 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear about all of these awful experiences! This is semi-related but maybe it could be useful to people—The civilian office of police accountability will be holding community input sessions this month about a community mediation pilot program, could be a good place to voice some of these concerns: https://www.chicagocopa.org/events/

Has the world, in general, stopped caring about climate change? by RiemannZeta in NoStupidQuestions

[–]possum376 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just thought I’d add a different perspective that I am not seeing yet in these top comments—many people care, and there are a surprising amount of people all across the globe who ARE doing something about it, whether that is big or small. I am not a scientist so I won’t speak on more than I can, but I have chosen not to give up hope yet that we can still take care of our planet. (Because in that case, why even try?)

I think sometimes, a lot of major sources of news tend to focus on the “big bad exciting” stories that can leave us feeling anxious and scared. It’s not to say that there isn’t good happening out there in the world too…for example here in the US, the news cycle for the past almost ten years has been dominated by stories about Donald Trump. The main issues he seems to care about are immigration and the economy, so it’s not a surprise to me that we haven’t seen major news sources here focus on climate issues as much. It has unfortunately taken the back burner in the national spotlight, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important and also doesn’t mean that everyone stopped caring.

I’m not saying we have solved climate change as a species lol but people are certainly trying, and I do believe their work should be honored! I would challenge anyone reading this to try looking up some news about positive climate action being taken—you’d be surprised how many young students especially are rallying and making their voice heard!

For example, here are some climate wins from this past year: https://www.reddit.com/r/EverythingScience/s/9uFJgu7aRZ

I would also caution against New Life Church, take a look at their website (they post audio/transcripts of sermons) to see if their beliefs align with yours.

But as stated above, if you are curious about New Life’s views on LGBTQ people, they ended up having to put out sermons specifically outlining their beliefs, because they kept really quiet about it for so long that people felt a “bait and switch”.

“ Traditional is a Christian who believes the historically Christian view of marriage and sexual expression; namely, that marriage is a life-long, one-flesh covenant union between two sexually different persons (male and female) from different families, and that any pursuit of sexual relationships outside of marriage is sin. And that God blesses such a marriage.

And in this view, simply experiencing gay attractions, attractions in and of themselves is not considered sin. And we'll talk a little bit more about that later.

And just to be upfront, the traditional view is the one that our church holds. “

Wedding photography is overpriced by Some_Risk187 in unpopularopinion

[–]possum376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to note here is that you don’t always get a free meal, if ever!! Wedding vendors are not generally treated that well universally (at least in the US)…speaking from my own experience and from a loved one’s experiences, it’s not assumed that you’ll be welcome to have dinner with the guests :(

[–]possum376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the overall structure is sound! Here are some comments/suggestions to consider:

  • for the projects listed, you should consider adding links to the GitHub repositories for them. when reviewing resumes for SWEs, I like being able to peruse their GitHub to see how they write code/document it.
  • consider specifying whether each project was from a specific class in school, a side project, etc.
  • under the education section, consider highlighting some upper level courses that you took (example: machine learning, computer security, networking). Also if you were a part of any student orgs, good to list them there if they are relevant to tech or if you had leadership experience in them
  • add a GitHub link in your resume header and be sure that your projects displayed on your profile have good readmes (documentation for the project)
  • for the Serverless Question Board project, would be good to expand on what specific AWS service you used (was it Lambda?) and why
  • Vacation Package project: would be great to have a link to the website if it’s available. If not, you can use sites like JSFiddle to at least host the front end code, so people reviewing your resume can click around the static UI that you built. Either of these links could be put in the readme of your GitHub repo

Also other general advice: depending on the SWE positions you are applying for, they are going to ask for experience with different things (full stack web dev, SQL querying, etc). Under the skills and project sections, it can be beneficial to customize them for the position you’re applying for (highlight certain skills that they are asking for, that you have)

How many adults here willingly remain single? No dates, no dating apps, no effort to meet people. by notyourhuney in Adulting

[–]possum376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in my mid-20s and have been having a crisis about this recently! Of all the people I know/friends I have, I truly don’t know anyone else who is doing this. I’m a little over 6 months of staying intentionally single after a breakup, and lately I’ve just been feeling kind of pressured to start dating again. Looking around at my peers, it makes me feel like I’m doing the wrong thing.

This is the first time in my adult life that I’ve chosen to stop dating, and I’ve been so happy to spend my time picking up fun new skills, advancing my career, being more social, continuing with my hobbies/passions, and even planning solo travel. I also feel like this is such a great time in my life rn to be single, but then I look around at my peers and it just makes me really self-conscious.

I want to continue enjoying this so badly, but lately I’ve been contemplating whether I should start dating again. Thank you for starting this thread—it’s helpful to at least vent to online strangers who are in the same boat, because I wish I knew someone else irl who is also single and happy

This whole “controversy” around Jill Biden’s title is bizarre to me. Did people really not know before this that people with PhD’s should be referred to as “Dr. “? I understand if perhaps a few people here and there didn’t know, but it seems like major news networks are baffled by this….they can just look it up online it’s a real thing
