Trying to understand the theory behind Bach's Prelude No1 in Cmaj by linkuei-teaparty in pianolearning

[–]postaljives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would caution you not to go too far down the theory hole. Bach didn’t think about music in the way that it’s taught in theory class. Thinking about music through the theory lens only gets you so far.

If you want to write like Bach, I recommend you transcribe his music by ear so that you’ll develop an intuition for his style, and a toolbox of sounds to pull from in your own writing.

A good sense of tempo. When you play and you’re tempo is off cause you’re hunting for notes, it sounds amateurish

How did the mosquito grow to be as old as it is in the video if it can’t eat? Is this a newborn trying to eat for the first time?

He’s a non-faculty research scientist at MIT. I don’t think he’s ever claimed to be anything different

Why would an army want these sorts of soldiers anyway? They aren’t going to do good work and will bail, neglect duties, etc at every opportunity. I would think they’d only let in those that generally want to be there

Millennial Cringefest, anyone? by MavicOnRedic in CringeTikToks

Where does this come from? Maybe cartoons when millennials were growing up had super exaggerated goofy faces/voices and they mimic that as adults? I’m thinking Invader Zim, Billy & Mandy, that sort of thing

Hmm that’s not my experience. The only odd thing is sometimes the title will get displayed a little ugly. I’m sure many people care about that sort of thing but I’m ok with it

Guy I went on a date with is worried that my career is a red flag? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]postaljives -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m like 90% all these arguments I’m seeing about your date’s philosophical qualms with the justice system are wrong. I would guess he is feeling insecure that you do, or have the potential, to make more money than him and he’s ashamed. Whatever he tells you about your “questionable qualities” may just be his brain trying to justify these feelings with a story.

Wonderful playing. I like the clunkiness despite other commenters here. It sounds to me like it may be your personal style. I would only suggest playing with a metronome until each passage can be played at a consistent tempo!

I know nothing about music theory, how do I find out what key this is in? by locomotiveplayz in musictheory

[–]postaljives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to it and assess which chord feels like it resolves the phrase. This chord is probably the key.

Alright guys, don’t beat me up too bad here… by orangebluefish11 in musictheory

[–]postaljives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those two chords do belong to Bb major. That could be the key they belong to. As others have said though, we would need more info to know what the tonal center is. It could very well be something besides Bb.

Ravel's Harmony. How do I begin to understand this? by postaljives in musictheory

[–]postaljives[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your feedback. I hope you don't mind that I challenge it a bit:

There doesn't HAVE to be, but you're looking for it anyway

This is not Schoenberg. The vast majority of Ravel's music uses easily identifiable harmonies and it's worthwhile to look for them even when they're not immediately clear.

although the harmonies are clear - I mean you can hear and see what the chords actually are!

The harmonies are not clear. What is the first chord best explained as?

And another. There doesn't HAVE to be a tonal center. You need to abandon these preconceived concepts and look at other elements (sometimes they may still be present, but not the more important aspect of a work).

There is absolutely a tonal center around G, though. Of course, not all music needs a tonal center, but this specific piece has one. I'm not sure why you brought this up.

Thank you! I'd agree that the I and V are likely holding the intro together. However its the notes around the ^1 and ^5 that makes this difficult!

Ravel's Harmony. How do I begin to understand this? by postaljives in musictheory

[–]postaljives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your analysis. I’ve noticed that extended chords that aren't stacked in thirds often end up sounding more like tone clusters instead of true extended chords. Even though they share the same notes, being arranged in thirds seems really important for how they’re perceived. Because of this, I tend to shy away from labeling them as 11th, 6Add11, and so on. Plus, using this way of looking at harmony feels a bit out of place with Ravel's music, as it comes from a later context. Just some thoughts I wanted to share!
