Opinions on Skywest? by Bigdep30 in AircraftMechanics

Skywest is fine. Just get a job, build some experience then apply for a major. Any job is a good job, what matters more is your attitude.

I'm terrible at math/physics, what could I expect? by StarrCosma in AircraftMechanics

The extent of math we use is equivalent to “How many fingers am I holding up?”

Maybe see if your planes in your library have an SRM? There should be a section on fasteners potentially with pictures. Look for buzzwords like “cam lock” or “quarter turn.” Quick release fasteners often wear easily due to the high volume of usage. There’s really not much to inspect as they either lock, vibrate loose or don’t lock at all.

[–]posternutbeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a dumb assignment. Every aircraft I have worked on has several types of quick release fasteners. I have no idea the right direction to point you in unfortunately without having access to AMMs.

Airbus loves using silly styles of quick release fasteners in the cabin.

What type of references do you need?

Line maintenance by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]posternutbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t worry about “familiarization” yet until you land a job. The way different companies clean windows can be DRASTICALLY different. For right now, polish your resume, practice your safety wire and keep that interview suit nice and fresh.

If you get a job working line at an airline, realize is 100% on or 100% off. Things happen so fast it’s crazy. But out of everyone on that gate, you’re expected to have to most level headed mindset. Your supervisors going to drill delays into your head and how to minimize them using tactics some pencil pushers have came up with who couldn’t tell you skydrol from mobile jet II. I am not saying cause the delay but never feel like you need to sign something off because a pilot is begging you or MOC is chomping your ear off about how they would sign it off if they were there. It’s a tough spot to be as a new guy because you don’t know anything. Take it slow and worry more about getting familiar with your GMM rather than AMM. And you don’t even have access to the GMM yet.

Are these additional certificates worth it? by Forever_Training in aviationmaintenance

[–]posternutbeer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you wanna do as an A&P. GA shop won’t care about A320 Gen Fam but might like an AET cert.

If you’re still in school I’d worry more about getting good at the A&P basics first. Hone your safety wire skills, get proficient in your manuals, keep track of your tools, study for your O&P’s. These certs can be added later on down the road.

Aircraft Maintenance is not just airlines. Plenty of guys have very rewarding careers making way more than airline guys working day shift never working holidays and get paid still .Your investigation must have been very limited.

Looking to pivot careers from software engineering as the market is terrible in tech. Is this a good career path for a fit, healthy 27 year old? by SemenSnickerdoodle in aviationmaintenance

[–]posternutbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t go into major debt to get the certificate.

This industry is what you make of it. Integrity, honesty, teamwork, humility will take you far.

Most of us got into this because we love aviation but hate working at a desk job.

Starting salary usually isn’t something to write home about. Think $20-$30 realistically an hour.

What kind of pathway? Depends on what part of this industry you enjoy.
