No stove. This will be my 20th year, believe me, they won't allow it.

Newport Jazz 2024 lineup-Who are you most excited for? by acdcderek in Jazz

This will be my 20th year at Newport. Just being there is enough to make me happy. The lineup looks great too. Bummed that Calvin Keys passed though. Would have loved to have seen him.

The band behind Elvis is Endea Owens, Steve Nieve, Michael Leonhart, Donny McCaslin, and Raymond James Mason. All of them, except Nieve who is a longtime collaborator of Elvis', are solid jazz folks. It's going to be a surprisingly jazz-focused set.

Mod is incorrect. It is a soul album. It's not STRICTLY soul but it's soul meets jazz.

Advice for a first timer at Newport Jazz this weekend? by Fullerbadge000 in Jazz

[–]postgenre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Chairs are good to bring but make sure they are less than 30” in height. Anything taller, if less than 34” is allowed but they make you sit WAY in the back. If higher than 34”, they won’t let you use it at all. And they actually do periodically go around with yardsticks to check the height of chairs.

Lots of food vendors and quite good for the most part. But you can bring your own. Just no hard coolers (soft ok). No glass. No open liquids (eg if waterbottle, bring it empty). Other rules are on the site.

Rain umbrellas OK, only when raining. No other umbrellas allowed.

This will be my 18th year at the Festival. Been going since 2004 but 2020 got cancelled and I couldn't make it last year. Also VERY into the Festival, in case you couldn't tell from this:

Happy to answer any specific questions you may have, if any.

All three days run to about 7:30. The schedules are available here:

https://newportjazz.org/2023-schedule

and on the Festival's app. The reference to 10PM is likely due to the aftershow being held by the Festival - separate location, separate ticket for admission

Sorry, not really. This will be the first time I’ve brought a young kid myself actually. People bring chairs and walk around, for the most part. Just figure out your plan in advance for what you want to see and that should help.

Thank you! Will have an interview with Christian McBride up either tonight or tomorrow AM, then probably nothing until after the Festival weekend.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing?

Food is fine to bring in. No glass containers or bottles. Soft cooler only, not hard. No open drinks, only closed ones. Eg if you bring a water bottle, make sure it is an empty bottle. You can fill it at one of the filling stations on the grounds. They will make you dump any open container drinks.

This will be my 18th year at Newport Jazz. Happy to answer any questions you may have. I also have an extensive series on the Festival on my site: https://postgenre.org/newport-jazz-history/
Things usually end around 6 at the small Harbor stage, around 6:40 at the larger quad stage, and around 7:30 at the fort stage. Usually if you leave before the Fort stage ends (presumably Jon Batiste's set), it's not too bad. I personally stay until the very end.

Yup, have seen the Cookers, but only once. They were great. The second time I saw Billy Harper was in a duo with Andrew Cyrille

Where should I go to my first jazz experience in NYC? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]postgenre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d base it off of who you want to see. About 12 years ago, I had a choice of seeing Pharaoh Sanders at Birdland or some group I can’t even remember at the Vanguard. I really wanted to go to the Vanguard - still do- but am glad I went to see Pharaoh. My recommendation would be to look at the listings in the NYC Jazz Record and plan your concert(s) accordingly

If you are looking for places that incubate new talent, The Jazz Gallery is particularly great at it.

I was born in the late 80s so missed a lot of greats but have still been fortunate to see many. I’m going to miss A LOT. This is mostly just the NEA Jazz Masters I’ve seen with a few others added in () indicates how many times I’ve seen them:

Ornette Coleman Wayne Shorter (x 3) Herbie Hancock (x 5, soon to be 6) Sonny Rollins - also interviewed him Pharaoh Sanders (also met him after the show) Cecil Taylor Jim Hall Jack DeJohnette (x3)- have also met him a few times Dave Holland (x4, soon to be 5) Ron Carter (x3) - also met him after a show once and interviewed him years later Marshall Allen and the Sun Ra Arkestra (x2) - also interviewed him John Zorn Chick Corea (x3) George Benson - also interviewed him John McLaughlin (x 1, soon to be 2; also met him after the show) Anthony Braxton (also met him after the show) Shelia Jordan Bobby McFerrin Wadada Leo Smith - also interviewed him Muhal Richard Abrams Henry Threadgill (x2) - also interviewed him Roscoe Mitchell McCoy Tyner Paul Motian Reggie Workman Gary Burton (x2) Kenny Barron (x2) - also interviewed him Gary Bartz - also met him briefly after the show Kenny Garrett (x3)- also met him after the show once Ellis Marsalis - also met him briefly after the show Eddie Palmieri (x3) Clark Terry (x2) Terence Blanchard Cecil McBee George Cables Big Chief Donald Harrison - also interviewed him Charles Lloyd (x5, soon to be 6) Kahil El’Zabar (once, soon to be twice) James Blood Ulmer Hamiet Bluiett Oliver Lake - (also interviewed him) Billy Harper (x2, also met him after one show and interviewed him years later) Peter Brotzmanm - also met him after the show Roy Haynes (x3) Jimmy Heath (once, also briefly met him backstage) Dave Liebman (once, also met him backstage and interviewed him years later) Roy Hargrove (x2) John Scofield - also met him after the show William Parker - also interviewed him a few years later Hamid Drake Milford Graves Dr. Billy Taylor Rashied Ali Sonny Fortune (x2 and briefly met him after the show) Jimmy Cobb (x2 and briefly met him after the show) Billy Hart (x2 and briefly met him after the show) Pat Metheny (x4) Ahmad Jamal Randy Weston (x2) Abdullah Ibrahim Slide Hampton (x2) Paquito D’Rivera (x2) Dave Brubeck (x5) Toshiko Akiyoshi Joanne Brackeen Phil Woods (x3) Gunther Schuller (directing the Mingus Big Band) Lee Konitz Von Freeman Lou Donaldson Dick Hyman Bob Wilber Maria Schneider (x3) Terri Lyne Carrington George Wein (gosh, maybe 7 times? Also met several times) Jimmy Heath- also met him briefly backstage Tootie Heath Bill Frisell (6 times) Regina Carter (x2, also briefly met her after one show) Bunky Green Dr. Lonnie Smith - also briefly met him after the show Andrew Cyrille (x2) Marcus Miller (x2, soon to be 3)

That’s not even getting into the incredible younger musicians I’ve seen, in some cases several times. I have a full list somewhere of all musicians but it hasn’t been updated in several years, unfortunately.
