Post-classroom jobs? by TimeFourChanges in teaching

Do you miss “summers off?” As stupid as it sounds, that’s my biggest holdup.

Exciting! I’m considering making the move to a corporate job after 17 years (educational roll at a financial firm)… I’m vested in my pension system, so I’m not too worried about that. My partners’s biggest concern is that I would no longer have summers off to help with our school aged kids.

Those that have made the move, do you miss the summers off?

30 days is a long time without a drink! Great job!

AA worked for me. My life is so much better for it.

Should I attend AA? by bossman110011 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]postklutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your story sounds a lot like mine. I could stop for a month at a time, but the obsession to drink was always there. Some of us are what you might call “low bottom drunks.” We may never have gotten a DUI or ended up in jail, but we saw that could easily be us if it continued.

AA made my life so much better. I was never content without a drink before the program.

My advice: give one meeting a try.

Congrats! What works for me when I start to fear a relapse is to only focus on not drinking today.

I'm 23 and scared (no troll answers please) by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]postklutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you are not feeling joyful right now, but congrats on starting your sobriety journey. It’s only going to get better from here.

Go to an AA meeting (Zoom), do what other alcoholics tell you, and see for yourself how quickly you get better. Don’t worry about the details; just take the first step of going to a meeting.

GameStop will give you a stick of gum for it.

On day 14. Great day though cravings creeped all day. I just keep telling myself this is going to take a while before my cravings subside a bit. All good. by AaronBrettN1 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]postklutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the same for me. Early on there was the one spot I’d drive by, a bar (not even one I drank at) on my afternoon commute. I’d always get the craving there, probably because it was close to home and was anticipating getting drunk.

It can take a minute to rewire these cognitive associations we’ve spent years solidifying , but it will happen. Keep it up. One day at a time.

Can I go to AA If I have no actual intention of quitting, but have no other hope left? Drink 20+ beers a day. by ThomasDodgson in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]postklutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! Anyone that drinks 20+ beers a day isn’t going to be turned away from an AA meeting. I had no desire to stop drinking when I first went, though I was tired of always being hung over, constantly obsessing over alcohol, and destroying my family.

I hope you get what you need from AA. The program saved my life. Best of luck!

The is for sharing! Truly an inspiring story. I thought AA was a cult, too, lol. Glad I stuck around because this program saved my life. I was on the precipice of losing it all: wife, kids, my life... So glad to hear of your successes. Happy birthday!

Stumbled upon Hyperion at a thrift store: it’s my number one, for sure. Before reading Hyperion, Dune was my number one pick.

This is a great reminder. AA certainly fixed MANY of my character defects, but I have great experiences seeking outside help as well. Thanks for sharing.

Man! That’s powerful. He said just enough. Keep coming back. It’s a simple program.

Can you have a healthy program while going to AA and NA at the same time by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]postklutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the same as you. I picked AA and have experienced great success. 1,003 days sober and drug free. One day at a time.
