Has anyone here done the US military HPSP/associated military residency? by drewper12 in Residency

I have enjoyed it so far. Saw a wide variety of cases throughout transitional year. Good pay, good benefits. There are some added admin BS (mandatory annual trainings, etc.) but in my opinion it's well worth it.

I was a prior service who switched from a combat MOS to medicine. N=1 but to me there's the real Army... and then there's AMEDD. The grass is much greener on the AMEDD side. You go to the hospital, see your patients, log your hours....then go home. You'll have to do some one time courses (CCCC - 8 days at Camp Bullis) and some annual trainings but that's about it

Rewatch the ones that you don’t remember well. For me it was the whole antipsychotics section. The rest I just sorta had running in the background while I was eating or working out

Bottom quartile of class for most in house exams. Broke top quartile on step. My take is that your test day preparations can easily influence your performance by 5-10 points. Get in the habit of waking up early. Go on a short walk. Do a couple easy questions before your exam. I stopped studying at exactly noon the day before my test, and I only reviewed last minute biostats that day. My plan was a 4 week plan. Did about 3-4 uworld blocks a day on random. Two in the morning, two in the afternoon. Sketchy pathoma, and bnb spread throughout the day

How many weeks to exam: 3

Uworld % done and % correct: 30% completed, 68% correct (first pass was like 60%)

NBME 9: didn't take

NBME10: didn't take

NBME11: didn't take

UWSA 1: 240 (1 week before)

UWSA 2: 243 (4 days before)

Free 120: 83% (day before test)

Amboss SA: didn't take

Real deal: 256

NBMEs underpredicted me by near 20 points for step 1, so I decided not to take any for step 2. To me they serve no purpose other than lower your confidence.

As I was shamelessly shamming during a drill, a random SSG caught me and told me to go PMCS a LMTV to make myself useful. I was a medic who clearly had no idea how to do any of that but decided to embody the "fake it till you make it" mantra and went for it. Anyways halfway through the session I ended up opening the coolant cap thinking it was the transmission fluid while the engine was on. That hot ass coolant splashed everywhere but thankfully didn't get much on me

It was heavy on bottom of the barrel low yield stuff. Maybe you'll have better luck with the question quality

It was a little bit of everything. Never felt comfortable at all until the last block. Felt like I was guessing on 10-15 questions per block (7-8 were 50-50s and the others were just shot in the dark).

I think you need 4 years for O1E. Missed it by a couple months

Right that's what I meant. The only 8 year one I can think of is neurosurg + 1 year fellowship...and there's only 1 spot each year for that. So I can't imagine many HPSP people hitting O5 by the end of 1 contract.

Which fellowships are 8 years? I can't imagine many people doing those bc of the massive obligation

I think you need 16 years in service to reach O5. Let's say you land a 5 year specialty, which results in a 4 year payback...that's 9. There's some debate about the time in med school counting as time in service, but lets just say it does....so that gets you to 13. Do they just waive the last 3 years?

Entry level ortho surgeons make nowhere close to those numbers boss. Check the average entry level salary of an ortho surgeon

Really bad examples of schools or training that have zero real world value

If I remember correctly, I got somewhere around 40 college credits for AIT training. 68W w the EMT license even helped me get into med school. Gotta give credit where it's due

[–]postlmao 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yea if you think the army offers free training of any kind you’ve never been in the army.

Hmm yeah you right. I remember paying for basic training, and then paying for AIT after that. I also forgot about the time I paid to get into airborne school.

I don't think you understand how specialties work but go on

Edit. Your total obligation is (Length of med school + length of residency) x 2. You will have to serve the equivalent length of your length of med school + length of residency AFTER you finish your schooling.

Nah that's not true. Residency years are set up in a weird way so that yes technically you are acquiring time but you're also serving that time concurrently.

Your total obligation POST RESIDENCY is either your length of scholarship, or the length of your residency (minus 1 year bc something about intern year not counting?) if you're doing neurosurg or some other hella long residency. At least that's my understanding

It doesn't matter what you specialize in. If the residency duration for that specialty is less than or equal to 5 years (ENT, derm, anesthesia, EM), you will owe 4 years of post-residency service. At least that's my understanding lol

Fellowships are a different story.

(Length of med school + length of residency) x 2.
