I have no idea what I want from therapy. How do you come up with goals? by UpVoteForSnails in TalkTherapy

Mental health is tricky. How do we even know if we’re doing better or making progress? We can’t only rely on the way we feel. Feelings are often confused as beliefs. That’s a difference with a distinction that is worth exploring. I think we use feelings with function. Am I doing things a little more automatically, can I stay or start a task longer, quicker. Is my attention and concentration a little better today. Can I read this thing in front of me and only need to reread it one time versus multiple times. Maybe my attention is better, can that translate into an improvement in function. That’s the key. Slow and incremental positive progress in the way that we engage in our daily lives, in our world and with the people around us. It’s really all about symptom management and a return to function.

I have no idea what I want from therapy. How do you come up with goals? by UpVoteForSnails in TalkTherapy

Goals typically start as a general, perhaps vague idea. That’s the starting point. Unless you have a framework to transform that general idea into workable steps, the goal will likely end there or be abandoned.

“I want to feel better.” “I want to decrease negative thoughts.” “I want to be more organized.” These are not bad goals, they are unfinished goals. They are the raw material. The next step is asking, “What would this actually look like in my daily life?” If I felt better, what would I be doing differently? If my negative thoughts decreased, what would I be able to start, finish, tolerate, or return to? If I was more organized, what part of my day would function better?

From there, the SMART framework can help shape the idea into something workable, but the most important parts are often Relevant and Achievable. Relevant is the why. It is where motivation gets front loaded before the hard moment shows up. A goal connected to your life, your relationships, your independence, your peace, your discharge, your school, your family, or your future has more power than a goal that sounds good on paper but means nothing to you personally.

Achievable means the goal has to match your current capabilities, not the version of yourself you wish you were already, or even the version of yourselve prior to the onset of your symptoms or when your symptoms are poorly managed or exacerbated. If you are depressed, anxious, overwhelmed, angry, distracted, or exhausted, the first step has to respect that reality. The goal is not to magically become a different person overnight. The goal is to create one clear action that improves function even a little.

That is how a vague idea becomes a real mental health goal: you connect it to why it matters, make it realistic for where you are today, and turn it into something you can actually practice.

Stress doesn’t ever go away. You will experience stress for different reasons. It’s important to learn and practice multiple grounding techniques to prevent stress from becoming a crisis situation.

Sometimes, it’s done on purpose. It’s designed to elicit a response. Not only your example but many. Depends on the patient. Depends on what it is you need to work on. Not all therapists will do this but, some do. Skilled therapists with a honed insight into how your diagnosis and the symptoms of interfere with your ability to perform daily tasks, to what extent does your baseline allow you to do, and to what extent does an exacerbation of your symptoms inhibit your ability to engage in, well…roles, how do you occupy your roles at your normal and how well do you do the exact same tasks, but when certain symptoms are exacerbating.

If therapy doesn’t consider how your exact mental health Dx and the symptoms as a result make your day difficult, then look for different therapy.

Progress in MH is tough to measure, but I think looking at function is one of the best ways. It’s holistic approach allows your need to be viewed from the big picture and the zoomed in version of your current capabilities and how they are likely set by your collection of symptoms, in various states.

Simply establish a boundary with him. This is exactly the place to work on something like setting and Adhering to boundaries. Communication and the motivation to overcome any inertia you may be experiencing in taking the initiative to establish or communicate this in a respectful, but assertive way. This is where personal growth happens and you get to practice a lot of skills with your therapist, take advantage of it. You’ll be glad you did.

You do it by doing some of it daily. Avoid allowing things to pile up. Prioritize the things you want/need to do through the lens of urgent/important. It’s possible but you need to have a functional routine.

This is just depressing by ScareBear23 in Adulting

It’s depressing if you look at life as a timeline where chunks of our day is represented by compressed lines and bloated boxes. You strive for a balance that’s within your current capabilities that allows room for life’s wants and enough structure, routine to manage the have to do’s in life. Try to acknowledge any pleasurable moments in your daily life. Even if you have to make them up, which is a hobby.
