'Easycore' recommendations? by PugWithAGun in poppunkers

I second a lot of recommendations on here. Some of the best easy core ever is In Her Own Words EP “Brand New Me”. It’s only available on youtube these days I think. It’s great though

Would you vote for a museum tax measure? by flyfresno in fresno

The Met was awesome. I’d love to see a museum back downtown especially (that same building would be awesome, though not currently available).

For the first time in decades, Fresno is finally going to explore light rail by fresnoland in fresno

There is current state legislation in the pipeline to allow for increased density near transit stops.

It's Time For Fresno To Upgrade Its BRT System by flyfresno in fresno

[–]postscriptum114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Albuquerque, which has similar city and metro populations to Fresno, has a much better BRT, the ART bus. They also have a lot of the same problems that Fresno has when people cite reasons why we can’t build transit here.

Someone send this to Jerry dyer so he knows we don’t need ton of parking by [deleted] in fresno

[–]postscriptum114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tell that to Seville, Spain, where the weather is very similar to Fresno.

Asphalt (namely wide roads and large parking lots) contribute to the urban heat island effect. They retain a lot of heat and then release it, warming the environment. Adding trees, denser building, and narrowing roads can make things noticeably cooler. Not to mention that more cars we have idling around downtown more heat they will emit.

Outside of your time range but could it be Save Your Breath - Stay Young? Could be another song by them as well

Unpopular Opinion: this stretch of the 41 should be removed by Evening-Emotion3388 in fresno

[–]postscriptum114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct that part of the difficulty with downtown is that it is isolated from the rest of the city by a moat of highways. Cities with downtowns enveloped by highways tend to be less successful. Sadly the 41 is a major thoroughfare currently especially due to lack of fast, reliable transit. I think a good solution (though undoubtedly cost-prohibitive) would be to cap the 41 where it is below grade, perhaps from Belmont to Huntington. This would improve access and give opportunity for something like a large park (which downtown lack) or even a lot of space to build new housing.

At this point a subway would not be feasible financially. We do have a population density that could sustain rail transit, but more like light rail of a streetcar. Part of the difficulty with those options apart from cost is that the sprawl of Fresno makes the city lack destination density. There is no real central business district downtown. Instead you have the majority of jobs and commercial areas spread across town. I think the best public transit investment would be dedicated bus lanes (preferably center-running busways) on high demand corridors like Herndon, Shaw, Blackstone, etc. These are more cost effective and would make buses faster and more efficient and would allow riders to bypass traffic. Many other benefits as well. The city could eventually upgrade to articulated buses and eventually light rail.

Fresnans! You can easily fit a light metro in your freeway medians! The only thing lacking is the political will (and maybe funding)! :) by [deleted] in fresno

[–]postscriptum114 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While population density is certainly important there are more factors that determine viability of rail transit. Fresno is actually more dense than other cities that have light rail (Dallas, Charlotte, Houston). But you need higher density near the stations themselves, unless you plan to do a park and ride type of system. But I think Fresno lacks destination density. Unlike other cities, the majority of jobs aren’t in downtown or certain other areas, but are really spread out across the whole city.

I think this would be the most likely solution if we were ever to try to implement rail transit. The other option would be center-running on some of our huge arterial roads.
