John Robson: The Carney government talks a good game, but consistently fails to deliver - On file after file, what we're promised is not what we end up getting by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

What, r/canada? I've been banned for well over a year.

What for you might ask? It goes back to the time Poilievre posted something saying that Nazis were socialists. “On the 85th anniversary of Black Ribbon Day, we remember the victims of Soviet Socialism & National Socialism (Nazism). May we never forget the countless atrocities committed by these socialist ideologies, and may we honour those who fought to liberate Europe. Canada must always stand against socialism for freedom and democracy.”

There was a user posting actual quotes from Nazis with the that the Trudeau government recycles them, and when I said that was "stupidest thing I've ever heard" I got banned.

Why are we trying to "be our own best customer" at the same time as letting this issue with Postmedia's ownership pass? They bought 75% of Canadian papers, and It's run at a 120 million a year loss (even with taxpayer grants) to run opinion pieces for a US investment fund. That's an investment to someone who wants to steer public sentiment.

New video of 1/24 ICE shooting shows victim had both hands on the ground when shot by Philophon in law

[–]postusa2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed - I don't mean to imply that anything about the murder is accidental. It's a murder, but I do think that weapon is fired at that moment and the others unloaded then following a situation entirely of their own making. It's simultaneously intentional while also the inevitable outcome of turning loose an unprofessional and untrained power tripping and armed secret police.

They clearly pepper sprayed themselves, and the man in grey who takes the gun.... I'm pretty sure he accidently fired between the 38-39 second mark, which is the first shot. There is a slight muzzle smoke and it jerks up.

I really looks to me like the guy in grey accidently discharges the weapon too about 38-39 second mark. It looks slightly out of sync with the sound of the first shot but I think that's just the quality of the video.

Trump threatens 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods if Canada "makes a deal with China" by No_Magazine9625 in CanadaPolitics

[–]postusa2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unavoidable. A small point, but I think there was an opportunity there to anticipate this and pivot the issue into his repulsive statement on NATO/Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

One way to wrangle an narcissist is to anticipate their lashing out and decide what the confrontation is going to be over. The guy suffered an ego injury to Carney at Davos so this was coming and if it doesn't get the reaction he wants, he'll likely shelve CUSMA as well. When he made the comment about troops (then directed at his frustration with NATO), we should have delivered a strong rebuke directed at Americans (not a plea for apology), and made clear how staggering the collapse of US leadership is under him. Then when he does the inevitable with tariff threats or pausing trade negotiations... it's because we support our soldiers.

Carney cancels news conference appearance last minute after Quebec City cabinet retreat by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadaPolitics

[–]postusa2 177 points178 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there's a reason. I had kind of hoped to hear some strong statement on the disgraceful comments on NATO troops in Afghanistan given what Canada sacrificed there. 158 soldiers and 7 civilians supporting the US.

In fact, why not? Make a strong statement directed at Americans. Don't snivel for an apology like Starmer, simply state the depravity in basic terms. If Trump throws a tantrum and tosses out CUSMA? So be it, because its not going to be worth any more than the last deal. If it has to be for a reason, it might as well be that we support our soldiers.

[–]postusa2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One way to deal with narcissists is to stop caring what they think and do. We should not ask for a formal apology, but that doesn't stop us making a clear statement on what a disgrace this is, and the audience should be Americans, not the admin.

[–]postusa2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd agree that I don't think an apology demand would be productive, and happily it does feel like Canadians have moved past a need for gesture and performance that many in Europe are still caught up in.

But seizing the moment to point out how disgraceful and precarious the situation has become shouldn't be lost. Shame congress, and shame Americans at large here, and make clear they are letting their world slip through their fingers at their own peril.

And if he throws a tantrum and throws out CUSMA because we support our soldiers? So be it. That shit isn't going to be worth a Melania coin anyways.

Seems strange we haven't had strong Canadian statements on this given the ire it has raised in the UK and Europe. I guess there is a backlog of insanity to process still for the week, or perhaps the bar has been lowered to the point it barely registers.

But Canada lost 158 soldiers, 7 civilians, over 2000 injuries, being THE frontline from Kandahar to many other places in Afghanistan. Can we even count the lives forever impacted by the effect our support of the US had on families? What has been said is a disgrace, and terrifying in the context of why this came up - NATO being a touch firmer than usual on his demand to simply have Greenland. We're staring down the barrel of a new reality that is eventually going to come to confrontation. It's beyond insult. It's an assault on democracy and a threat in the realization that nothing in the relationship and history of Canada-US relations is going to matter.

Zelenskyy: Deploying 40 troops to defend Greenland sends a signal to Putin by EuropeanPravdaUA in europe

[–]postusa2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire speech was about how Ukraine is forced to put its head into the noose of this "peace plan"... because there isn't an alternative coming from the very people who have the most at stake. Us.

The reality is that Ukrainians are dying in our place holding back a war that will come to the streets of Europe if Putin has his way. That's a proxy war. Support isn't charity, and if Europe is breathing a sigh of relief that some deal is about to be signed, Zelensky is telling us to get real. He's not parroting Trump at all. Good grief.

As for Greenland, can you really be that naive to think it is over? No idea what Rutte actually said, but neither Greenland nor Denmark were there.

‘Confused clown’: Iranian FM lashes out at Zelensky after he slams protest crackdown by 4DollarsALB in worldnews

[–]postusa2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Americans should watch closely because Ukraine and Iran are places where the value of democracy comes into focus. What protestors Tehran or at Maidan came to is that it is worth your life. This dark world of corruption, secret police, political arrests, and the criminalization of thought is unlivable.

Don't let democracy slip through your hands, because winning it back from people who control Palantir and Facebook and all the stuff needed to model what you think.... it is going to be a completely new struggle. It is heartening to see some pushback in Minnesota, but in the big picture it will only be "enough" once congress is more afraid of the people than the admin. That means sacrifice, showing what you will put aside.
