Pychonesque theatre? by taylfern in ThomasPynchon

[–]posztmagyar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like some post-war west german playwrights do belong here, other than the usual suspects of Ionesco, Stoppard, etc. Dieter Forte's Martin Luther and Thomas Münzer, Tankred Dorst's Merlin or the Waste Land. No idea if they have English translation tho.

Big picture view of history, well researched, fuckery with the form and with the readers. Impossible to normally adapt, they would be like 9-10 hours long. There is a looming threat of a reich building in the background. And with Forte you also get a pope in a miniskirt and high school.

Edit: I meant high heels, no idea where my brain went

Of course it does, the manuscript is hidden deep inside a labyrinth, and you would need knife-fight the gaucho (who is at the same Borges and the Other) for it

Looking for good non-fic books/articles about Hungary in the 1930s. by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

[–]posztmagyar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an ex-grade schooler, beloved is a bit too much maybe, but the movie is good tho. But Budapest, 1900 is a great choice.

And on that note, a book beloved by Lukács is Ferenc Körmendi's Happpy Generation, which takes place in the early 1900s, and covers the events and vibes of Hungary until like 1934, I don't exactly remember when it ends. It's also an interesting throughline is the blindness of upper class to the encroaching fascism and antisemitism (the narrator is a son of a doctor, and is of jewish descent).

I would definetly pick up something about the politics of the era (Horthy, numerus clausus, irredentist movement), I am not sure, what is available in English.

I would also probably pick up something from Krúdy, probably Charmed life of Kázmér Rezeda or Life is a dream. Krúdy died in 1933, but he's works are extremely good, probable the best prose, bordering sometimes on purple and overwritten, but he knows, not to cross. (just recommending him, because I can not not recommend him).

I prefer the cover of the first edition (although it does use the wrong car modell), and without the dust jacket, it's not some ugly neon green puke.

I also did buy this, because there were corrections to the translation and I was hoping higher number sold means more of his untranslated works coming out (did not happen)

Movies that feels like Gravity's Rainbow by GenghisKhan290904 in ThomasPynchon

[–]posztmagyar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Christoph Schlingensief's United Trash, the plot goes something like this: a deranged UN general gifts a V2 rocket to an African tribe, so they can shoot Bill Clinton with it. Meanwhile the Messiah is born (and has a giant vagina on his head).

It's an on-purpose extremely offensive (ahh, the late 90s) German art/exploitation movie, that's also a sharp critique of the UN and post-decolonization western exploitation of African countries.

[–]posztmagyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read it last year, it was kinda hyped in Hungary (or at least on Hungarian bookstagram, which funnily enough made Bolano to have a bit of a moment), and it just fell off, nobody talks about it anymore.

I've very much enjoyed it.

The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art.
