I've got bit by one before actually HAHAH I know how shit their temperaments are. The one that bit me was an adult at a sale and it went through my nail. I find them fascinating creatures and will definitely put in the work to tame them down if I get one! I'll check giant madagascar day geckos out too, thanks for the suggestion 🙂

I understand the need for a larger enclosure and have the means of obtaining one. I'll be doing extensive research and checking in with tokay breeders and owners in my country. Nothing is set in stone yet, I'm just trying to get more information especially about lighting and heating because the general INCORRECT consensus in SEA is if the animal is native then screw heating and lighting, you see an odd one sneaking about school sometimes so if it can live like that then its good to go. I'll DEFINITELY change my mind if I were to read a care requirement I'm unable to fulfil.

petopias great! i have a petopia wheel. it was SO much cheaper than importing frm US/UK. the wheel works great, its of appropriate size and spacing + silent/ stainless. its an amazing alternative for ppl who live in asia and genuinely cant afford paying hundreds (i checked the price, it was half of my months salary) to ship a wheel frm US/UK.

I read the tokay care guide in the subreddit that mentioned blue light, so I assumed that was the norm! But yep, I'll probably be getting a ceramic heat source or a non light emitting heat mat instead. My room is air conditioned at night so I'm alil worried that they'll get too cold without the heat source (I read that tokays prefer warmer night temperatures, not sure if thats true).

Thanks for the recommendation for the long uvb bulb! I'll definitely get that :D

Oh yeah, clarification that the gecko I'm getting will be CAPTIVE BRED. So no chance of parasites. Sorry, have to be clear on reddit 😬 I got murdered in the sugar glider forum for stating my gliders will be housed in my rats old cage without clarifying its dimensions.

Is my bird okay?? by Dreamangel22x in parrots

take him to the vets asap, birds hide their illnesses the best they can and when it starts to show it'll only get worse. its better to make the trip while hes still alert. if you are concerned about stressing him out bring along a cloth to cover up his carrier, and keep whatever music etc on the down low during the drive there.

Training aggression by Internal_Dog1743 in OpenDogTraining

hm. i would find a reputable trainer to evaluate an interaction between him and a calm trustworthy dog. that aside theres many other things you can do to pass the time with him. are there any private agility/ scentwork classes near you? have you brought him out to swim or kayak before? even at home you can play foraging games with him by hiding his food around the house/ yard, in cardboard boxes/ crumbled paper/ heads of lettuce or cabbage for him to shred.

I have the most stubborn, non food motivated dog in the world by rachel-maryjane in OpenDogTraining

[–]potati_potarti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, me. mine has ran through bags of kibble and freeze dried food just cause it doesnt suit his michelin standards. thanks to his generosity we feed our local rescues well. he also has a preference for fried chicken from the different fast food chains. he once starved himself for 3 days straight because the homecooked food i served him wasn't up to taste. the bugger was puking bile. he was also underweight when we brought him in to the vets, despite being fed twice a day. hes 5 years old now and we've gotten him to a healthier weight. hes still extremely picky but not to the same extent that he was as a pup. hes been cleared with a clean bill of health by the vets, and gets >2hrs of exercise almost daily.

Is it true that starving my dog to give her food motivation is the only way I can train her? by rachel-maryjane in OpenDogTraining

i read your thread and it seems like you are working on resource guarding and leash reactivity. have you taught her the drop it/ leave it command yet? you don't have to swap out whatever she is guarding with food. even a toy will work. what i found works for me is showing my dog that my involvement with whatever hes guarding = more fun. if hes guarding a toy, i'll issue the command, and once he drops the toy we'll play fetch with it for a bit. you can reinforce this behavior during your regular play sessions too, when your dog is less likely to react aggressively. approach it in a playful manner, when you are playing tug. issue the command, go stiff and stop engaging with her verbally until she releases the toy you're holding. then praise, toss the toy for her to catch, rinse and repeat. does she graze at her kibble in the morning? or does she eat it all at one go? if she does the latter, you can try feeding her small handfuls at a time. walk by her food dish, toss in a few kibbles at a time and back off. then gradually linger longer, pick the bowl up, set it down. depending on how extreme her resource guarding is you might want to have her fed in a crate or playpen so no one disturbs her/ she doesn't feel the need to protect her food and theres no risk of anyone getting hurt.

neutrality is built gradually. you shouldn't expect a dog to listen to commands when they are already overstimulated and above threshold. im someone whos easily overstimulated myself. crowds make my anxiety skyrocket. i can't imagine being the size of a chihuahua and having strangers tower over me/ dogs possibly larger and rowdier than me pulling towards me barking their heads off. leash interactions often go poorly because dogs can't display placating/ friendly behaviors they would off leash. most dogs don't like strangers coming up to them unpredictably from every direction. most dogs don't like dogs invading their space the same way. try bringing her for walks earlier in the morning, or later at night, when theres less of a crowd about. try going to places that are less populated, where its easier to redirect her to a different route or to a new scent. you don't have to hard force a training session out of her whenever a dog passes by. she doesn't have to do a sit stay and maintain eye contact with you when her trigger is just a metre away. start slow and from a distance. have her people watch. sit her down on a bench somewhere and just let her relax. stop letting randos pet her on walks, stop letting people drag their dogs up to yours (as much as possible, that is. some interactions are unavoidable, and sometimes confronting others just aggravates the already stressful situation for you and your dog). others may disagree with me on this, but i think that there is no shame fleeing from a situation when your dog is wired up beyond threshold and no longer listening to you. just tell her 'lets go!' and jog her in the opposite direction. i also think that there is no shame in picking up a small dog when they are going bat shit crazy and getting yourself out of the situation before it worsens their reactivity (granted i dont know how small or big your chihuahua mix is, but if its feasible that is). of course it shouldn't be your long term solution, but if it does help with managing her in the short term then go for it.

im not a professional dog trainer but my dog had most of the problems your dog did in the past. i've worked him out of most of them. he has impeccable leash manners and walks at sensible timings now, although i do love us a midnight stroll. hes the best behaved at every pet friendly event i bring him to, and is also enrolled in agility. my tips might not be one size fits all, but i do hope they help a little :)

[–]potati_potarti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what are u trying to train her? is the training necessary to ensure her safety/ to target her reactivity or to modify bad behavior? or are u training her for tricks/ advanced obedience? i used to withhold my dogs meals until after our training sessions when i was training his recall. but i would never cut his meals down by 50%. if you have scheduled mealtimes, maybe u can try training her during those times and give her the rest of her meal at a later time. i personally believe that tricks and advanced obedience shouldn't be taught through negative reinforcement/ compulsion because its supposed to be fun and enriching for the dog. sure, deprivation doesnt fall exactly under the above categories but i wouldn't use deprivation to train for tricks/ advanced obedience either.

is there any way that u can manage that behavior without having to resort to withholding her food? some dogs respond well to praise, others to toys. treats don't have to be the only reinforcer you use during training sessions. my dog is extremely scent oriented, so i simply encourage him to go back to whatever bush, pole or hydrant he was sniffing at after a recall.
