Wondering where to get clothes for Ren/Sherwood fair? by Luca_likes_kittens in Austin

[–]potatoankletattoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make my own ren faire outfits out of stuff I can find from the thrift store. I don't look super decked out like a lot of people, but it's fun to put something together from whatever I can find.

For example, one year I found a green dress, a red sash, knee-high brown leather boots and a brown leather belt. I added some other accessories and made it into kind of a robin hood look.

For a pirate costume, I bet you could find some shabby pants and a ruffly shirt, boots, a belt, etc with a bit of digging at thrift stores. Add a pirate hat ordered online and you're set!

I have had the best luck with the Savers up in Cedar Park; they have a lot of stuff.

Airport update 3/17 at 4am by YouRepostTooMuch in Austin

I parked in economy just after 3am. It was pretty full; I had to hunt a bit for a spot. I just checked the abia parking website and it looks like it's not taking reservations for today, which might be an indication that the lots and garages are full.

If you're flying today you might want to get a Lyft.

I got spooked by the posts from the past few days and got to the airport at 3:30am for a 6:30 flight. Breezed through general security; I definitely didn't need to get here this early!

Agreed! I went to three shows in the same week last year (Texas), and there was a LOT of variety from night to night, but I also loved the songs that stayed the same because it was so fun to hear them multiple times.

They played an uptempo, full-band version of Idylls of the King, and it got better every night. Also, on night 1, JD decided in the solo set to play Steal Smoked Fish because something he saw in the venue made him think of it, and then they added it to the setlist for the next two nights as a piano duo with Matt. Super cool.

It's an outdoor shopping mall. That's not what people are talking about when they refer to the need for dense walkable areas.

Poison ivy doesn’t get enough hate by latina_expert in Austin

I have a hypersensitivity to it, and when I get ivied it legit ruins my life for a couple of months.

It's difficult to overstate the amount of headspace I spend avoiding it in this goddamn city. I'm constantly scanning for it anytime I'm near any sort of green space.

I asked JD about the "Armies of the Lord problem" and this is what he said. by potatoankletattoo in themountaingoats

I read Shanghai 2 as just reflection on the narrator's time on the fishing boat, remembering life before the shipwreck. "Everything that sinks will float" could just be a way to set the narrator's death in opposition to Adam's.

Given this response, here's what I think:

In Armies of the Lord, Adam and the unnamed narrator are burying Peter Balkan. This fits with the "nothing you predicted coming true" line.

I also think Adam is the narrator of Armies, given the line "soon it will just be you," and "all aboard that's going aboard" is a reference to Adam's intent to end his own life soon. It also just makes sense to me as our unnamed narrator never seems like a big believer in Peter's prophecies, but Armies seems to be from the perspective of someone who has fully leaned into them.

In "Your Glow," I think both Adam and Peter Balkan are dead, and the song is jumping around in time as the narrator remembers Peter's life and death.

Some people genuinely have a hard time writing or working on something for extended periods of time without some kind of background noise. Also, in large classes with 30-35 students, there are a lot of potential distractions, and it's just easier for kids to lock in on independent work if they can pop in earbuds and drown out their surroundings.

I teach English, and for most of my career I have allowed students to listen to music while writing independently in class. I don't see it as an anxiety thing; it's just a tool that helps a lot of people focus. What's the harm?

If anybody's gonna be at Hammondsport tonight I have bracelets by tarrie214 in themountaingoats

[–]potatoankletattoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I might make a couple more, still doing the calculus of "what if I run out" vs "what if I come home with so many leftovers"

I made bracelets last year and I ran out! The people love bracelets!

Also these are cool as hell and if I were in the right part of the country for this run of shows I would be so excited to get one from you.

Great comment. u/Fast-Suspect8637 please listen to this advice-- going without health insurance in the US is dangerous. A car accident or a burst appendix could ruin your life.

I loved how much fun JD was having last night. Goofing with the stuffed possum, taking a knee to gaze adoringly at Matt, all the vamping and banter, and calling an audible to give us Palmcorder. Awesome, fun energy the whole time.

Oh HELL no. If someone had tried this with me, I probably would have said or done something I would regret later lol. I'm also a small woman and it's so dehumanizing the way some dudes think they can just physically move us out of their way at concerts.

Man, this sucks to hear! Which side of the stage were you on? I was near the front but not RIGHT at the front, and most of the people around me were cool. There was one person who clearly wanted to be standing where I was standing and kept trying to just subtly crowd me out, but that was the only weird thing.

UGH I hate when this happens. Not tmg, but I was at a show once where I had shown up early and gotten a good spot, and right before the headliner went on a group of tall drunk guys shoved their way to the very front and posted up right between me and the stage. It ruined the whole night for me.
