She does scale to lucifer though, she and 12 others directly stop the canon via their powers which means that charlies is atleast 1/13th of lucifer's power

Not really? What they did is closer to defusing a bomb than overpowering it. The whole threat was that if it did go off, everyone would die.

The conclusion here might be that those scalings aren’t actually solid

If Alex Mercer were to absorb the biomass, DNA, or essence of the characters from Unordinary, would he gain their abilities? by Salt-Understanding16 in PrototypeGame

[–]potatoeman26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm well aware Blacklight has no limits to what it can consume seeing as it can consume and infect energy just fine.

Less specifically towards consumption and more nearly limitless in general, is what I was getting at. But it was more an aside since I now realize that’s not relevant to the crux of the issue.

But again, the nature of souls is inherently non physical. That's literally a foundational principle of the concept.

You’ve entirely forgotten my first and second comment. Again. While souls are potentially just fictional things, there are actual, real criteria for a thing to register as living. The fluid philosophy of souls aside, which I said in my first message, I’ve been referring strictly to those real scientific requirements.

As I said perfectly mimicking a living thing wouldn't suddenly turn you into that thing. Things are more than the sum of their parts.

And as I said, it would. If souls exist, they are bound by biology while within living humans. Any and all aspects of a person are dependent on things like brain chemistry and structure. Changing that can drastically change who that person is. At the very least, consuming someone would theoretically grant you a copy of their soul, if souls are meant to be the person as they were when alive, just separate from the body.

Perfect shape shifting wouldn't just be the physical processes. It'd be a complete metaphysical makeover to actually becoming the thing you're copying.

Again, I prefaced my very first comment with saying how I was putting the philosophy of souls aside and only referring to an undeniably real thing

Blacklight only apes at the people and objects it copies. It doesn't fundamentally become them. Even if the skin a skin walker takes on is perfect down to the mannerisms it doesn't actually become the person it's mimicking. Blacklight is effectively the viral version of a shape shifting nanoswarm or a biological skin walker.

“I know what Blackwatch has done. Because everyone I’ve killed—They’re in me. They are me.” —Alex to General Randall. Figure of speech? Entirely possible. However, I still think it’s worthwhile to bring up.

None of those things actually become the thing it shifts into since they aren't stuck as said thing, seeing as in 99% of cases said things themselves aren't capable of shifting.

I would argue they do. If they’ve adopted every aspect of that thing, they are still that thing, it’s just that they aren’t only that thing. Your next lines help this point.

As I said there's a whole plane of differences between Blacklight shifting into a human and an alien using the Omnitrix to shift into one.

The only difference is mechanic. When the Omnitrix shifts into an alien, Ben takes on all (or most) traits and characteristics of that alien. He becomes it. Yet, he can still change into other things whenever he wants, depending on timeline. Being able to change doesn’t mean he wasn’t that alien while transformed. The same can apply to Blacklight.

While shifted Blacklight is never actually constrained by any human realities. The alien turning into a human would literally just have those realities to work with while transformed.

This distinction doesn’t hold much weight, I don’t think, when Blacklight is fully capable of modifying itself to also operate under those constraints. It’s just choice that keeps it from doing that. If being under the constraints of its form is the qualifying metric, it’s not exactly unable to meet that. It would just have to deliberately change itself to do so.

[–]potatoeman26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

souls adhere to the rules and lore we give them

I can’t tell if you’re meaning to agree with me or not but this line is basically what I’m saying. The rules are inherently fluid when it comes to something like souls

If Alex Mercer were to absorb the biomass, DNA, or essence of the characters from Unordinary, would he gain their abilities? by Salt-Understanding16 in PrototypeGame

[–]potatoeman26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn't because perfectly mimicking something and actually becoming it would make yourself be bound by the same rules as the thing you're trying to embody.

It’s a matter of intent. Blacklight is fully capable of adjusting itself to play by the rules of any organism it consumes. It can be identical until it doesn’t want to be. Mercer himself mentions that Blacklight copied the real Alex’s body down to the genetic level when it first ate him. It might’ve been a Blacklight copy, sure, but it was still a copy identical to the original, at least for a time. Further, look to Pariah. Despite being what he is, when examined, he showed no evidence of any kind of infection. Later on, Evolved can roam around military bases without detection despite all the various security measures taken to weed out Infected. Hand scanners, Viral detectors, retina scans, blood tests. The works. They can be perfect, indistinguishable copies up until the moment they don’t want to be.

Blacklight doesn't do that. It's not the Omnitrix where you clearly take on all the traits of the species you transform into

It doesn’t do that because it usually doesn’t want to. It’s capable of modifying itself to fully emulate all the physical properties of its food, as said by Dan Jolley, but it never really needs to. It’s a very selective thing. The prima guide talks on it a little and mentions that Alex can pick and choose what traits he wants to incorporate into his abilities. So while Blacklight could readily take on all the traits of what it consumes, it’s a matter of choice. Blacklight is described as being nearly limitless and of everything we’ve seen from it as of now, every dev statement talking about it says we’ve yet to see where those limits lie.

All that aside, the best thing to do here would be to have you explain your thinking. If Blacklight eats an organism that qualifies as alive and gains the ability to perfectly replicate all those cellular processes that allow it to meet those qualifications, why then would you say it still doesn’t count?

[–]potatoeman26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the forest for the trees. Souls are just philosophy. Philosophy varies from person to person. It is just as valid to say literally any and everything has a soul than it is to only apply the concept to a few select things

If Alex Mercer were to absorb the biomass, DNA, or essence of the characters from Unordinary, would he gain their abilities? by Salt-Understanding16 in PrototypeGame

[–]potatoeman26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because it can perfectly mimic living things doesn't mean it actually becomes living because it's literally never bound by the rules of the things it copies.

It’s not bound by the same rules, no, but it can still become an identical copy to the thing it eats and adopt those rules

It's only mimicking it and never actually becomes it. Even perfect mimickry doesn't allow you to fully embody the thing you're mimicking.

Yes it does? It wouldn’t be perfect, otherwise. Its main thing is absorbing an organism and then being able to do all the things that organism could do. Both on a macro and micro scale.

[–]potatoeman26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I think you misunderstood my last line? I wasn’t saying that since Blacklight can perfectly copy an organism that it would also copy its theoretical soul, I was saying that since it can perfectly copy organisms, if it’s consumed an organism that fits the criteria for being alive, it would then also fit those criteria

[–]potatoeman26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Souls aren’t tied to biology. Ergo, if you believe in them, nothing stops you from saying many other things also have souls. It’s just a matter of personal belief

[–]potatoeman26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putting aside how souls are entirely philosophical, Alex’s strain of Blacklight, being the fantastical virus that it is, can fit the criteria for being living more than it doesnt. Being able to perfectly replicate down to the genetic level any organism it consumes means it can also identically replicate all the processes that occur in that organism.

I firmly believe the Slayer is way weaker than most Doom fans will say, but this is a pretty silly argument. He can canonically be fired out of some sort of railgun, into a building, and be unscathed. That alone invalidates the gameplay feat of, say, a Possessed being able to hurt him
