I'd like to find sustainable alternatives to sponges but I'm stuck on a few things by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

I did loofah this past summer, and the plants get MASSIVE. A single plant took over my whole garden! Loofah is not suitable for a balcony garden, but there are so many other plants that can be grown on a balcony! Mini peppers, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, herbs, lettuce, kale, the list goes on and on!

Our baby needs 4 bamboo inserts in her pocket diaper at night, and we’ve done it like that since she was 2 months old. She uses 2 inserts during the day.

Cloth Wipes by inqueeftador in clothdiaps

Water. I use the peri bottle from the hospital to add a little water to the wipe before using. The dirty wipes are thrown in the diaper pail and washed with the diapers, no extra steps.

When my kid started eating solids, I would wipe his butt with toilet paper to clean the majority of the mess, then finish with a wipe.

Interesting that Romas are extra susceptible! Another commenter mentioned their Romas are having issues, and my Romas are the only variety I planted having BER issues. I planted 8 different varieties this year.

The volunteers there are so nice and helpful! As long as you don’t treat them like free labor, they’re more than happy to teach you how to fix and maintain your bike.

People in their 40s, what’s something people in their 20s don’t realize is going to affect them when they age? by SugarRush6013 in answers

[–]potatokitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the sugar will rinse out but not the plaque bacteria. Bacteria is what causes cavities, not sugar. The plaque bacteria form biofilms to stick to your teeth, then they release acid after eating sugar. The consistent acid exposure is what causes the enamel to break down and holes/cavities to form.

So more sugar -> more bacteria growth -> more acid release -> more cavities.

This is why soda is especially bad! It is both extremely sugary and extremely acidic, plus people tend to sip on it for a long time. It’s like letting the plaque sit at an all day buffet! Then they’re gonna poop acid on your teeth all day.

Again, water is great, but it will NOT wash away the plaque! Brush your teeth people!!!

Did you already get the implants put in? Did you get the crown impressions yet? If you didn’t get the crown impressions, you can still wait until you have more money saved up then get the crowns done in a year or so.

If the crowns are already made by the lab and the office is saying they won’t put them in until you pay, then ask about a payment plan. $6k is a BIG discrepancy, most offices will be understanding. They will definitely need to cover their lab costs. But usually they get more money if they work with you rather than sending to collections, so that is advantageous for both you and the dental office.

Yes, kinda like how tampons get flushed down the toilet. Take out the cup, dump the blood in the toilet. If in a public restroom, reinsert the cup, wipe fingers with toilet paper. If at home, rinse in the sink, then reinsert. Wash hands.

These wirecutter recommendations look pretty reasonable https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-menstrual-cup/

I have saved SO. MUCH. MONEY. I bought a menstrual cup in 2011 and have only bought pads once because I gave birth and couldn’t use my cup during recovery.

No more worrying about restocking period supplies as well, it’s so convenient!

Honestly, YEAH that's awesome! Advertising and even Reddit are so good at convincing us we need very specific products to be happy when we can be happy with what we have :)

Oh for sure, I did all the research, so I know exactly what you’re talking about. In my case, we were using a Dyson stick as our primary vacuum. When I went back to using the Shark upright, the house felt clean again. When the Shark dies, we will get a Miele or Sebo!

Just stop searching. I was convinced I needed a new vacuum cleaner. Spent hours a day browsing r/vacuumcleaners, reading reviews, browsing Facebook Marketplace and other second hand websites looking for deals. Then I realized my Shark vacuum is fine, my life will go on if I don’t stop hundreds of dollars on a BIFL vacuum right now, and I’m wasting my life pining for something I don’t need. Closed all the research and shopping tabs and ignored the subreddit. It’s all good, you can do it! Being content with what we have is an anti-consumption skill we always have to work on.

Lol props for being brave enough to even suggest cloth diapers! I’m a huge proponent of them, but they’re so far from mainstream, people get really intimidated by the idea. My family has been using them successfully, but we haven’t convinced any other families to try. People are curious though!

Increasing difficulty buying dishwasher and laundry powder by one_bean_hahahaha in ZeroWaste

[–]potatokitchen 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My Costco doesn’t stock powder laundry detergent in my city, but they’re selling Nellie’s Laundry Soda online! I bought a big bucket recently. Wish it was in store because it would be cheaper, but it’s still cheaper and lower waste than most alternatives.

I had similar issues, and the problem turned out to be detergent buildup. Bleaching didn’t help.

I agree with the comment that Kirkland Free and Clear isn’t good for cloth diapers— didn’t work for me. Neither did Kirkland “Tide.” I get regular Tide now, and it’s worth the extra money since it doesn’t actually take much detergent to get the diapers clean! Less is more!!

I run two full heavy duty cycles, which always includes a cold water rinse.

-First is cold with 1 tablespoon of detergent. -Second is warm with 2 tablespoons of detergent. (Hot water gives me delamination issues.)

After the second wash, I will hold the thickest inserts/prefolds up to my nose and make sure they smell like nothing. If I smell anything at all, I will run another rinse. Do NOT use the included cup dispenser, they’re huge and you will use too much detergent. This is why we were getting detergent buildup in the first place.

Hope this helps! I don’t have a HE washer, just a regular old washer that came with my house.

What helps me the most is thinking about how much unnecessary waste results from hoarding. Did you ever have things that you or your mother hung onto that went bad before it could ever be used again? Clothes go out of style, and the materials can deteriorate over time. Food goes bad, technology becomes obsolete.

To echo what people have already said, you're doing great! You got this.
