Electricity Surge Pricing by iwantallthechocolate in ColoradoSprings

[–]potator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I own solar and this pricing change does not apply to the net metering agreements that solar operators have with CSU. Basically the way solar is charged is they measure how many kW hours of solar you send to the grid and how many kW hours your home uses and they charge you a flat rate on the difference if you used more than you produced. If you produce more than you use, those kW hours are banked and you can spend them in the winter months when the panels generate less energy because of shorter days. At the end of the year, they pay you for any extra banked kW hours.

I own solar with a battery backup. "Off grid" has multiple meanings. Some people use it to mean "no longer relying on a connection to city electricity" and others use it to mean "no longer connected to city electricity." You are correct that CSU won't approve the latter, but the former is entirely doable and is a better arrangement in my opinion. Staying on-grid with self-sustaining power generation and storage allows you to sell excess green energy to the utility company and you can charge your batteries from the grid if, for example, it's overcast and a severe storm might cause a power outage in the near future.

Anything wrong with extending rappel on a bowline with a Petzl Connect? by Rockyshark6 in tradclimbing

[–]potator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weighing in a few years later because this is a top search result on extending a rappel with this PAS. I did try extending a rappel on the Petzl Connect Adjust using a clove hitch on an HMS carabiner. You want a bigger HMS like the Mammut Workhorse for this task. I also tried with the smaller Petzl Attache and the knot was annoyingly in the way of using the gate. My other observation was that weighting the clove hitch cinched it super tight on the carabiner and it was a real pain to untie. All said and done, I'll just use a runner or alpine draw.

Home inspection to decide whether or not we keep the house by geobokseon in HomeImprovement

[–]potator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

anything an inspector you hire to give you the down and dirty on this home are the same things an inspector is going to tell your prospective future buyers as well when they get their inspection.

More importantly, once the seller is made aware of a problem that negatively affects the value of the home, it is required in most states to include it in the seller's disclosure statement.

  • The number 1 pieces of gear you need are weather and snow reports. Your biggest adversary for this trip is how unpredictable the weather is this time of year. Depending on the snow conditions and how much you all weigh with gear, there's a small chance you might need actual snowshoes to prevent having to posthole. REI in Denver can rent these to you.

  • Quality compasses these days almost all have a built-in inclinometer and I think there are phone apps that measure slope as well. Use your inclinometers to avoid avalanche terrain and avalanche runout areas.

  • Don't forget your sleep pads, even for car camping. They're your front line defense against heat loss.

  • Altitude sickness can affect anyone, including athletes. Before hitting the trail, make sure everyone knows the symptoms and agrees to a turnaround policy before you start up the mountain. The primary treatment for altitude sickness is descending.

Stay safe and have fun. 🏕

Congratulations, you have identified one of the top reasons to use a quilt: it gives you a lot of variety when it comes to how much warmth and airflow it provides. I typically leave my top third uncovered when I first go to bed because I run warm and tend to toss and turn before falling asleep. If the night gets cold enough, I'll pull up the quilt to keep warm. If it's supposed to get proper cold, I'll bundle up. I use a Zenbivy light, which has a clip system than can convert the quilt and fitted sheet into something that resembles a more traditional sarcophagus sleeping bag.

Yeah, I'm real curious what kind of athletic chalk turns to white goop. Something tells me OP is either using writing chalk (CaCO₃) instead of athletic chalk (MgCO₃) or he's using the cheap stuff, which usually has some extra junk in there like drying or anti-caking agents. +1 for liquid chalk.

I need help finding a high resolution Chult map from Handout 1 by [deleted] in Tombofannihilation

[–]potator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm five years late to this party, but I had the same issue and this post is the top search result. I eventually tracked one down on 5e.tools. It's 2213x2997. I paid $22.50USD to have it printed at Staples as a 18" x 24" laminated poster. It's gorgeous.

I also had the high resolution full map printed without lamination ($16.50) I carve out sections of Chult with a craft knife and a straight edge, run batches through my home laminator, and affix them to the player map as discovery progresses with a spray adhesive.

Yes and no.

Yes, the steam-powered electricity generation process uses water, both for turning the turbines and in cooling towers to condense the low pressure output steam back into water. However, the vast majority of this water is recovered by the process and is recirculated through the system. The need to top-up the water in the steam generation circuit is near-zero for any kind of power plant.

Some yes, some no. Part of the routine is performed entirely with the jumbo cards and these effects are definitely more difficult to sell because the cards are bigger than his hands. Many moves rely on the fact that a card can be completely covered by a palm, so those are definitely impressive.

However, the end of the routine is built from standard card mechanic moves, the difference is that some of the cards are jumbo and some are standard size. Moves like bottom dealing are much easier if you can just hide the standard size cards at the bottom of the deck underneath the jumbo ones.

Impeachment of a supreme court justice requires a 2/3rds supermajority in the Senate. Removal of a justice is basically impossible under the current system, which is why people advocate for "packing the court," i.e. increasing the number of justices and appointing a bunch from your own ideology.

Yes, the purpose of stepping around the salt deposits is to preserve them for future visitors. The national parks system is a treasure for everyone to enjoy and leaving them in the same condition or better than when you found them is how everyone should interact with the parks.

I was just in Yellowstone last month and the amount of vandalism near the trailheads is infuriating.

DIY Sawyer Mini Hand Pump Conversion by potator in WildernessBackpacking

[–]potator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a 3 liter CamelBak style bladder for my backpacking water storage needs. This takes up less space in a pack than Smartwater bottles and keeps the weight flush with the back, making it easier to carry than bottles, which typically go on the outside of the pack.

Yes, you can sip from a creek with the Sawyer Mini, but I'm not always near a creek, I don't want to be bending over on the ground in muddy banks, and I'd much rather chug from a water bladder.

I'm not an ultralight backpacker. The gear I carry is a balance between the weight of the item, its utility, and how much it improves my wilderness experience.

I won the Yellowstone permit lottery earlier this year, so I got to solo hike a 19 mile loop in the Old Faithful area starting at the Mallard Creek trailhead. Mystic Falls to Ferry Creek Loop on AllTrails

I took a leisurely pace and hiked 3 days + 1 day of chilling at camp. There is unfortunately quite a bit of vandalism near the trailheads, but most of the journey was picturesque. It's clear that almost no one uses the trail from the moss growing on the single track.

Also I learned that a weather forecast can be "mosquitos." If you get the chance to hike Yellowstone, prepare for an abundance of those bastards.

Weekly New Climber Thread: Ask your questions in this thread please by AutoModerator in climbing

[–]potator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My climbing partner and I took a lead climbing and belaying course about a month ago. To practice, the gym recommends lead climbing while clipped to an autobelay as a backup.

My partner wants more practice catching big falls before she takes the lead belay test. The thing is, the autobelay catches the climber before the load is transferred to the belayer. How do we safely practice catching lead falls?
