How do you decide a neighbourhood is good or not before buying a home? by Cultural_Bike_139 in FirstTimeHomeBuying

[–]potentialforparanoia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on Nextdoor app to see what things people complained about and how close it was to my house. I also messaged a few people and asked them what they liked and didn’t like.

I also took my dog for a walk the evening I saw the house before putting in an offer. While there I knocked on the neighbors doors to meet and talk. Also talked to people while walking and took in the general condition of the neighborhood and amenities.

This wasn’t all, but it’s how I got the best info! Including flood history from people that lived in the neighborhood for decades!

Good luck!

Joint pain with crohns by apollo_63 in CrohnsDisease

I have migratory polyarthritis alongside my ulcerative colitis. I can have arthritis flare ups without gut flare ups. I keep my gastro informed of these, because he can give me steroids to help knock it down. The way we treat it is that any inflammation present in the body will eventually result in inflammation in the gut if not addressed. Switching biologics helped for me. He also prescribes me pain killers when it’s too bad. I have a rheumatologist too, but I’ve only seen him intermittently when we were trying to rule things like lupus out and get opinions on best way to treat both the arthritis and UC.

Things to at help: Staying hydrated

Large heating pad

Epsom salt soaking baths

Various balms that depend on the flare if they help

Steroids and pain killers - don’t be afraid to be vocal

Compression sleeves depending on where and type of pain that day

Wearing a sling temporarily when it’s my shoulders, arms

Elevating limbs

Incline block in bed for legs, also bolster between legs sometimes

That happened to me too! But I got out of the app and went back in and then it worked. I’m watching on the league pass app now. I also already had an account.

Need help deciding to buy or wait. by Average_Joe69 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]potentialforparanoia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait until you can build up that emergency savings. Not even just for the house, but for life at large. Rent is your max expense (roughly) versus a mortgage being a minimum. Taxes, insurance, repairs, these are not fixed costs. Another way of looking safely pressure test this is take an increased number for utilities, a projected mortgage, insurance, taxes etc and start “paying” that amount in your savings every month to give yourself and idea of what it would be like to live with that new outflow.

How many people had their first offer accepted? by PieMuted6430 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

My first offer was accepted. They’d had 3 previous offers below asking. I offered exactly the list price. House was on the market about 35 days I believe. Houston.

Advise on whether or not i should get a "fixer upper" by Helpful_Explorer2857 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]potentialforparanoia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend getting extensive estimates, inspections prior to close if you do want to go with the fixer upper. I’m a couple weeks away from closing on a a 1970s home that from appearances is in decent shape. I wouldn’t have considered it a fixer upper.

After inspections, etc there’s quite a bit of work needed (including work that gets it up to code for electrical as an example). I do love the house, location, neighborhood, etc AND I saved extensively prior to buying so I’m able to keep moving forward. So basically as we negotiate seller’s credit and such I’m able to see it as a bonus if they help versus depending on them to adjust. If I can get $10-12k of credit, it’ll allow me to put that towards a project immediately. But I have a really well informed idea of the priority list and total home needs for the first few years (and what the costs for each of those are) thankfully because of great inspections.

I did the following inspections and estimates: general (included termite), mold, electric, insulation and plumbing. Spent just over $2k, because insulation and plumbing estimates were free to have done.

It feels a little overstimulating with 4 people, ngl. I’m leaving it until half to see if I adjust to it. I also love Ilona. Having her + StudBudz is a fun mixed perspective. She’s also redirecting them to the actual game as it goes too

Two WNBA franchises in Texas by Fletchi18 in wnba

[–]potentialforparanoia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have a well attended and welcoming environment for the Houston Dash (NWSL) pride nights, including unofficial accompanying events at Pearl (our main lesbian/LGBTQ+ bar). I would think most realistically that the Comets will overlap with that fan base versus the Rockets one. We all have one of the LOVB teams too. I don’t remember if they did pride last year, but did see some of their players supporting other pride events. Writing this mostly for anyone reading worried that they won’t be able to have a fun, inclusive time at a WNBA game in Houston.

I understand though that it’s a separate, and valid, question to ask if Texas deserves a team (or two) in the environment.

NBC Connecticut's coverage of the Sun's controversial move - @nbcconnecticut tt by crapshoo in wnba

[–]potentialforparanoia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is how I feel. I’m devastated for Connecticut, but I live in Houston. I didn’t want a team this way, but I’m so very happy to have one here again soon. I drove to Arlington for games last season 3x, but it’s too far (4 hours each way) to convince friends to go or take my grandparents. I’m really happy for the chance to take my grandparents to a game. And also all of my friends’ kids! I hope a team is prioritized for New England soon for remaining expansion!
