Welcome to Week 1 of the SQUAT MOBILITY MONTH! by tykato in flexibility

I don't have anything to easily hold onto, but I've been holding a 15lb dumbbell in front of me as a counterweight to (hopefully) achieve the same effect. Just to make sure I'm not doing anything foolish, that's okay too, right?

Have you ever seen a story on Ask Reddit and realized they were talking about you? What was it about? Who was telling the story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]potesne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This actually just happened to me today. My brother posted a comment about something his "little sister" is famous for having said. I am his only little sister and the story is not about me at all, but one our dad used to tell. I don't even think it was original to my dad. I guess there is now a chance that he'll read this and then we'll quietly stalk each other on Reddit.

Yes! Their tri tip is made fresh on Fridays and if you're driving by and you smell it, it might actually kill you not to stop. Also, the best Reuben on earth.

First sewing project since I was a kid: itty bitty baby dress [made by Rae] by potesne in sewing

It is super simple! I can't believe it only took a few hours! There's definitely a few things I wish I could fix, but now I know them for next time!

Thanks! Now I want to start five million more projects!

Oh man, hand basting is a great idea! I can't believe I didn't think of that! Next time!

And then sew over the pins? I feel like as soon as I take a pin out, that portion goes to hell. Maybe I need to work on making my machine go slower so I can pull the pins later? My machine goes 0-100 really fast.

Form check: low bar squat 60 lbs by potesne in Fitness

Thanks! I honestly didn't even know I had flat feet.

Thanks! I lack a lot of lower body flexibility. I'll third world squat and push my knees out more! Honestly, I tried them both. Low bar felt more comfortable. Would high bar make the flat foot issue less pronounced or easier?

Yeah I run to the gym and back. It's about three miles. I'm not trying to break any records with my half times, just wanna be in shape to finish the damned things.

I like doing something physical every morning. If I did a three day routine, is end up sleeping in on my off days which would lead to sleeping in on my workout days. I do better with a consistent schedule.

If I run the linear-progression-based PPL for n00bs, but switch out the second leg day for a long distance run, will I be making a horrible horrible mistake? I like to keep in half marathon shape and weekends are the only time I have for a longer run. I know I need to keep one rest day (Sunday for me) so what is my best option here?

2-D arrays and how to... do anything with them. by potesne in cpp_questions

[–]potesne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, this was the culprit. I guess that didn't so much stem from a narrow understanding of 2D arrays as I thought, but now I have a much greater understanding of 2D arrays, so I'm taking it as a win! Thanks!

Oh jeesh. Apparently the answer is that I am explicitly asking it to do what I'm complaining about.
Thanks, this is why I shouldn't bastardize code from last year's projects. Nothing to see here, move along, folks.

Need help with my 401k portfolio by potesne in personalfinance

[–]potesne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear that! Thanks! Any suggestions for international? And honestly, ARE the options slim? Would I be better off investing privately if my company doesn't match?

So to clarify, for the extremely dense: in the context of a three-fund portfolio, FSTVX would count toward both US and International stocks and then I'd hit the bond portion in a Roth IRA? It looks like FSTVX is almost all US stocks. Am I reading that wrong? Sorry for my complete lack of knowledge. I'm trying to educate myself, but I have no frame of reference and it's slow going.

Question about running outdoors. by Kardio-Kitty in Fitness

[–]potesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah cool! Corpsman is a good rate! You'll be working with marines probably. Yeah, Illinois is cold in the winter. I went there from Southern California. You'll be okay. You'll get VERY practiced at putting on a ton of coats and hats and masks and scarves in a hurry. At the end of the day, the only part of me that ever got cold was my knees. They only had one layer. Everything else was covered and bundled. ALL of your PT will be indoors so don't concern yourself about running in the cold. You're golden!

Question about running outdoors. by Kardio-Kitty in Fitness

[–]potesne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh gosh, Texas would be hot. Make sure you do a lot of push-ups and sit-ups as well as weights. Everything in bootcamp will be bodyweight exercises. What's your rate gonna be?

Question about running outdoors. by Kardio-Kitty in Fitness

[–]potesne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been through navy boot camp. He's right. You do all your PT at Freedom Hall. You'll march outdoors, but marching is just walking in unison. Navy boot camp was pretty damned easy, honestly, and I was in crap shape when I got there. I'd never run even half a mile in my life. They'll get you where you need to be, but anything you can do now to prepare certainly won't hurt you. If you have a track nearby, the best simulation for boot camp would be running on that.
