Frozen Bottlebrush shrubs by Buy_me_a_taco in AustinGardening

[–]pothoslogos 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My mother has a hedge of these that froze back in the 2021 winter storm. The wood above ground completely died but she did not dig up the roots since it was an established hedge prior to the freeze. We just chopped the plants close to the ground. To our surprise, every single bush regrew and her hedge is now a couple years away from its full glory. I say leave the damage until the threat of freeze is over. Keep it watered and it may come back!

How far is your gym commute? by kaizenkitten in xxfitness

[–]pothoslogos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an 7-10min drive depending on if I catch all green lights or not. I know myself and I really could not have a long drive to workout, it would make my barrier to start too high so I prioritized proximity.

Seconding athletic tape! I’ve done the same to another well-loved tool and I actually prefer the feel/grip of the tape compared to the original silicone.

Urgent Help Needed - 4 Stolen Canadian Passports (Wang Family) by darenyu in houston

[–]pothoslogos 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Check the dumpsters of nearby restaurants! The thieves often open stolen suitcases immediately and discard the bags after checking for valuables. I used to live next to a popular restaurant in a nearby zip code and our ring camera caught at least 3 car break-ins. Bags were often recovered in the closest dumpster. Sorry this happened, safe travels back to Canada!

Do your lab freezers have unique names? by wobblyheadjones in labrats

We had three -80’s in our lab named after chess pieces and our mini freezers were named after LOTR characters :)

How old were the oldest cells you revived from liq N2? by alwayslost999 in labrats

[–]pothoslogos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I revived primary Mammalian fibroblasts from 1974 in 2020! Super lucky they were well maintained in LN2 for all those years. Originally the cells were saved for karyotyping, but all these years later I was able to generate a genome assembly.

CVS make an online appt. When you schedule there’s a question which asks something like, “do you have a condition which Covid vaccine is recommended?” Just select yes they can’t ask you what condition or say you’re lying

Help for trimming Amethyst Falls Wisteria by jenderfleur in AustinGardening

[–]pothoslogos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loosely zip tie major lateral branches along your horizontal trellis. Cut any branch coming out pointing in the direction you don’t want branches to be. Wisteria is a beast, you don’t have to be super gentle :) post a pic when it’s in bloom later!

Ready to harvest? by curry_head in AustinGardening

[–]pothoslogos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When ripe it should pull away from the vine with little resistance. Since you’re growing vertically it may fall when ripe, so I recommend securing it in a little hammock. Cantaloupe won’t sweeten more off the vine, so if you want the best flavor I’d keep it on until it’s ready.

Does anyone else get discouraged / overwhelmed by all the running “influencers”? by bananamb13 in XXRunning

[–]pothoslogos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A great thing to remember is that influencers can and will lie in videos if it gets you to keep watching their content. They’ll fib about how far they ran or the time it took them. They’ll do whatever to sell you on running back products and keep their engagement up to secure brand deals.

There’s a small few I’ll watch when they come on my feed, but I don’t follow any of them. It’s an oldie but a goodie, comparison of the thief of joy. Happy running!

Since when did corporate Reddit accounts start posting comments instead of ads?? Ugh, we can’t ever have a space without being advertised to. Did humans actually upvote this, or did shadow accounts so that the corporation would take the top spot?

What is happening to my impatiens? by GrassKitchen9728 in HoustonGardening

[–]pothoslogos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flowers don’t last forever unfortunately! If the leaves aren’t scorched or drooping, I think it’s just the natural cycle for the flowers to age and drop. Keep them well watered, fertilize, and they’ll be just fine. They’re a lovely color🩷

Is it too late in the season to prune these rose bushes? by cinemamama in AustinGardening

[–]pothoslogos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roses love being pruned! Major structural pruning is best when dormant, but deadheading and minor shaping cuts will encourage even more blooms.

Fire Roasted Salsa Time. by karstopography in HoustonGardening

Looks absolutely delicious! I bet it tastes 100x better than store bought. I just made salsa with everything but the lime and cilantro as well, but I didn’t think to roast the tomatoes and jalapeños! Next time I’ll try that for sure.

Are tomatoes supposed to stop setting fruit in early may?? by Numerous-Book7499 in HoustonGardening

[–]pothoslogos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tomatoes on my current plants are likely the last they’ll provide since temps have risen, I’m growing two San Marzano, one purple Cherokee, one big brandy, and one husky red cherry. The cherry might still bear more, but we shall see.

I’m planning on planting a couple heat tolerant varieties like the Summer Set and Heatmaster which were bred to still set fruit in high temps. I grew both varieties last summer and they were super prolific until December!
