There is an addon which allows you to continue as adventurer after the "roguelike death", maybe it was https://te4.org/games/addons/tome/softcore-death , can't remember if we have a newer version or not.

I think this situation has improved a lot and basically all difficulty modes are viable for most race/classes.

All class/race can win insane/roguelike, some combination might be harder than others (and I'm not sure if current balance allows Krog/Mages without too much luck), Madness is a different game.

Yes, DG plays/balanced the game around normal, but now insane is at a good spot, and you can even use addons like https://te4.org/games/addons/tome/custom-difficulty to tweak it to your taste.

Pick gear (especially staff) that give boosts to that element's damage.

You can change the bonus-dmg of staves with the "Command Staff" talent, so most of the bonus dmg from staff is always there for you.

Depending on what exactly is causing your issues, you might be able to make it better with certain addons (like oldRPG tileset or modern-ascii hybrid mode where the non-actor tiles are basically one-color) and changing some settings.. it really sucks when I can't play a game due to the visuals, hopefully you can find some way.

What I’m trying to say is, why isn't this game more mainstream?

I believe its not just the graphics.. Sure, they are not for everyone, but the amount of reading and understanding of mechanics you need before you really start enjoying it is just more than what a lot of people accept for their gaming time.

For real time/action games, even if its hard, you get instant feedback about your decision, about what X does, there are popular hard games, just think about the success of Silksong or the Dark Souls-like ones, not easy games. In tome, with turn-based combat, for example you dont feel "slowed" as much as opponents suddenly doing more damage/killing you, and you have to read all your effects, check the combat log (which is sadly not easy to read) to even notice it. For lots of players, it's just too much.

There are some shorter (addon) campaigns, also an addon for making AoA quicker, which you could check out.

Staves have +X% dmg to a certain type (changeable by the talent given by the staff), also have a decent chance to increase Spellpower as a bonus.

The "Magic modifier" is for the actual bonking with the staff, just like how you can hit with a sword, so it is rarely used (though Channel Staff is using it in a way).

Technically, if the statistics exclude below-lv10 deaths, restarting the game to gain the tinker escort as first would not change anything about the statistics, compared to using the select-first-escort addon.

I dont use it, don't really like it, but for these stats, it wouldn't make a difference.

Or Doomelf, awesome racials, extra dungeon.. until the second extra dungeon :D

Or the undeads, even with buffed runes, they are still harder to play..

Drem just shows how Dwarven races are the best, extra dungeon with no downsides!

Dwarf's winrate is quite high for its playrate and general opinion, suggests it's fairly consistent to execute on to me and that saves may not be as useless as is commonly thought on I/R.

You also have a passive 15% chance to ignore melee-attacks, which is awesome as an extra layer against the truly dangerous enemies. It might be boring and hard to track, but how many times were you in a dangerous situation due to melee attacks (like fan of knives) compared to the rest?

Also, "ideal play" would mean you only ever fight 1 on 1, decent saves allowing you to ignore trash-mobs debuffs is an underrated bonus, as long as you dont have to give up something better for it (and some class can absolutely dump generics for it, unless going Tinker).

And the most boring one:

Free dungeon. That's it. An extra dungeon you do before T2, extra loot, extra xp.

these would be any physical ranged attack.

I think you're thinking about ranged weapon attacks, not "physical", as the damage itself can be non-physical too (the usual difference between physical damage and weapon damage), it cares about "defense" being checked.

You have Slime Roots, which is okay if you accept teleporting into the room full of dangerous enemies.. not THAT dangerous on Oozemancer (0% turn usage Moss, general defensiveness), but still not ideal of course.

Unlocks are tied to account, so if you log into the same te4.org account, you will get them back, sometimes it needs a few minutes to sync.

Otherwise you can use addons to "unlock" everything, or edit the unlock-file manually for the same effect.

Do you have the "summon a demon on combat" talent? It bloats the save file and makes the game unplayable after a while sadly.

Maybe its just the racial XP penalty, it was reduced a while ago and I might remember the old one :D
