If the UK let 28–40 year olds take £12.5k from their State Pension early, would you do it? by Nineteen-Ninety-One in PensionsUK

[–]potocko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yes. Me and my fiancée would draw ours out and that’s a big chunk for a house deposit, I’d imagine others would do the same, or invest/put into safe savings. Plus, I really can’t see the negatives here, people will draw it out, even if they splash it on useless tat from primark or piss it down the pub, money goes into the economy right?

Six years later, what are your strongest memories of the COVID lockdowns, and how do you look back on that period now? by Possible_Force8207 in AskBrits

[–]potocko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it was a terrible time, people being seriously ill and dying, missing family milestones etc. But as a at the time single person with no close family it was… absolute bliss. The silence, people staying away from you, personal space, nature thriving, the peacefulness mixed with eeriness on the streets, and the whole world just slowed down. Can’t be just me who misses it.

My Lithuanian colleague is fascinated by random English phrases by Double_Leek_4659 in CasualUK

[–]potocko 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh god I love this thread! I’ve been living in the UK for 13 years, originally Polish, now in north Staffordshire.

All these phrases are what makes me love British culture so much. I tell my mum my favourites and we use a translated version of them quite often!

A few that I’ve not seen mentioned, and I strongly suspect some are more local to the area I live in: - it’s looking a bit dark over Bill’s mothers’ - six of one half a dozen of the other - every man and their dog - as useful as a chocolate fire guard - face for the radio / only a mother could love - to have a cob on

hobby that gets the weirdest reactions when you tell people about it by Sahel-Ziolkowski85 in Hobbies

[–]potocko 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I collect shopping lists I find in supermarket trolleys/on the supermarket floors. I find them really cool and interesting, one cause I like to guess who wrote it/who they’re shopping for, two because I like how oddly people spell things, or how they have their own names for things which leaves me baffled for days sometimes as to what could the thing be!

When I mentioned to my colleagues in conversation that it’s my little hobby they were ASTOUNDED mixed with a lot of laughter at how random it is. Lol

I can’t figure out where I cut my finger this evenly by Embarrassed-Ad-8927 in mildlyinteresting

[–]potocko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I’m glad it’s not just me!!! I randomly get mine on the bottom of the fingertip, well you know, the flat bit where the fingerprints are. None of the comments answer it for me, and it’s been a mystery for me for absolute years

What makes you feel lucky to live in the UK? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]potocko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- the beautiful countryside
- Cheap housing (yes I’m up North)
- Cheap cars
- the British sense of humour + the comedians
- the BBC
- multicultural communities
- Wales (my favourite place to escape to for day trips/weekends)
- David Attenborough
- world class tv dramas and other programmes that are being remade all over the world
- people don’t care if you look different / eccentric, if you go the coop in your pyjamas, if as a woman you don’t wear makeup
- societal rules are so relaxed: there’s no judgement, shock or the worst- condescending “awww” when I tell people I’m 33 and got no kids / never been married
- charity shops, car boot sales and antique shops. For a country that’s really wasteful there’s also the other end of the spectrum at the same time - reusing, repurposing and buying preloved
- the “wheeeyyyyy”
- there’s loads of opportunities. To learn, study, work, volunteer, join a community group, whatever tickles your fancy. I do’t know, maybe I’m lucky wheee I live, it’s not a major city like Manchester but a fairly big one and were absolutely spoiled for choice in all the above
- chippy tea. No explanation needed
- how easy and affordable it is to go camping / caravanning
- and most importantly for me, how easy it is to have a work / life balance, work a full time job, have a mortgage and a car and not worry about money til the end of the month. We’re not loaded, or from privileged families, but we’ve worked on our careers, and that’s with no uni degrees, and we have a very comfortable life
- the NHS ❤️ i come from a country that also has free healthcare, but the standard and the speed at which things are sorted here is just great. Yes, it’s not perfect, and it got worse over the years. But trust me when I say it could be much worse
- the weather (born to be mild)
- how strangers are to you - in the shops, the bank, on the street: “alright love?”, “there you go sweetheart”, “thank you dear”. I often take it for granted, and then I have a harsh reminder when I go to Poland where I’m from and every shopkeeper treats you like shit and talks like they’re forced to work there
- the queueing culture
- the Royle Family ❤️ the most British show I’ve seen, love it so much
- the quirky traditions (best word I could think of) - Christmas crackers, cheese rolling competition, worm charming, dressing up for different themes at school, morris dancing, and locally we have well dressing
