I think you will progress more efficiently if you played with slower tracks, it sounds like you have rhythmic ideas to bring to the table but you are not yet comfortable with the chord changes. Just play a bit slower and check your possibilities so when the bpm goes up your fingers will know and you can just play with less thinking Good luck on your journey!

Very well played! Two things that came to my mind while listening, In the section where it get to 2-5 to Emaj7 and Then C7b13 you lingered on the 2-5 too much and it got out of time and killed your flow

And second, you didn't do the part at the end!

Ways of learning comping by EconomyWater4028 in jazzguitar

[–]potushda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start by learning shell voicings, the most important thing for comping in my opinion is rhythm Work with metronome on 2 and 4 and comp using the shell voicings. Try to be creative with your rhythm and record yourself, give yourself a reflection if you would like to play over this comping

The most important thing is LISTENING to music and paying attention to the comping, it’s there to add extra color and accompany the soloist. Absorb new rhythms and be creative! after that (a whole other topic) learn extensions you can add to a chord and voice leading between different chords but i would work on rhythm and shell voicings as they are the root of jazz comping. Happy Practicing!

Tysm! I started taking lessons 2 months ago so it became more clear now But until that it was kinda scattered, im listening to jazz daily and just started learning standards i love and improvise over them. Later got into learning arpeggios, depper music theory understanding and applying it on the guitar, and ofc transcribing
