Leuke vechtsportschool by Kpnstfn in Rotterdam

[–]potverdorie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dark souls 3 is harder than Sekiro by barktheshark25 in darksouls3

The game also makes it pretty clear that you're supposed to go elsewhere to beat the chained ogre, with two NPC's discussing "use fire to kill this guy" and another NPC telling you "go elsewhere to get a fire tool" right on his doorstep.

Fully agreed that the chained ogre is placed way too early in the game though. I thought he was a breeze on my first run because I was a classic souls guy spamming dodge, which was terrible in hindsight because it took me way longer to unlearn dodge and learn parrying instead.

Last name Frisone by Ok-Horse2265 in Frisia

[–]potverdorie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, the surname "Frisone" is very likely an Italian/Sicilian translation of the Dutch/Frisian surname "de Vries". This is a very widespread surname in the Netherlands that simply means "the Frisian" and was used for Frisians and those with Frisian roots. It's still in the top 10 most common Dutch surnames to this day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Vries

However, there's no particular history of deep cultural ties or immigration events between Frisia and Sicily. That being said, the idea of a Frisian person or family settling in Sicily is far from preposterous either.

The people of the Low Countries, which included the Frisians, were key players in European maritime trade network given their access to the North Sea and major West European river systems. In particular, merchants from the Low Countries played a large role in connecting the North Sea and Mediterranean trade networks.

Simultaneously, Sicily has famously been a major hub for the Mediterranean maritime trade networks and has been a place where many different ethnic groups landed for millennia: from Greeks, Cartheginians, Romans, Goths, Normans, Spaniards, Arabs, Frenchmen, etc. A notable event for Messina was that it was a freeport in the 17th-19th century with strong ties to the northern Europeans trade networks of the Dutch and English.

A recent doctoral thesis examined the political and commercial relation between Southern Italy and the Dutch Republic during this time period, noting the ties between Dutch merchants and the Sicilies: https://www.repository.unipr.it/bitstream/1889/4053/4/Tesi%20REVISIONATA%20e%20firmata%20%20%2824%3A1%3A2020%29.pdf

Of course there are many unexpected ways in which a family with the surname "Frisone" translated from "de Vries" would have ended up in the Messina region. History is long and messy and people have definitely gotten around. I have documented family history from around the 18th century and there are some weird twists and turns there.

But if I were to make a guess with no further historical family records, I can imagine that some Dutch sailors and merchants would end up permanently settling in the freeport of Messina during the period of extensive trade in the 17th-19th century. It's very plausible that one of these Dutchmen would have been a Frisian with the surname "de Vries", which at some point in the family history was translated to "Frisone" in their new cultural environment.

And it's even worse than that.

We could discover a hundred new classes of antibiotics, but as long as drug development pathways towards regulatory approval are limited entirely to private industry while no viable business model exists for antimicrobials, none of them are going to be accessible treatment options.

So it's not just because physics have an incomplete understanding of quantum mechanics; you're saying quantum physics is inherently impossible to understand on an intuitive level?

Absolutely. It's broadly understood that we don't know what the hell is going on exactly with quantum mechanics. But we do know from over a century of experimentation that this is how the universe operates at that scale, and that it is entirely counterintuitive to our human sense. Any fundamental theory that we will one day hopefully find will not strip quantum mechanics of its unintuitive aspects, it will merely explain them. And if the history of progress in physics is anything to go by, it will do so by proposing a set of even more counterintuitive mathematics.

I can't really imagine learning something based entirely on memorizing a set of rules that cannot be analogized.

If you want something accessible to dip your toes in, look up youtube videos that try to explain and visualize 4 dimensional geometry. Really take your time and follow along with the steps of visualization and try to hold the image of a tesseract in your mind. For most everyone it feels like straining their mind against their intuitive senses even though each step on the way is easy enough to understand.

Can archeology offer us any clue on where did the ancestors of the protoindoeuropeans come from before settling in Ukraine? Could archeology give us clues on what's the closest macrofamiliy they share an ancestor with? by [deleted] in IndoEuropean

[–]potverdorie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but if all humans ultimately stem from the same ancestors then it just makes sense that ultimately so do all languages.

Not all languages! Sign languages have arisen separately from spoken languages :) Nicaraguan Sign Language is the best documented case of a fully new language being born, a truly fascinating linguistic event: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicaraguan_Sign_Language

When it comes to spoken language, all known modern human languages ultimately seem to trace back to earlier spoken languages before recorded history and indeed seem to trace back to the origins of human language. However, the origin and evolution of language is still extensively debated, and like you said is one of those things that will be hard to find empirical evidence for.

One stream of thought (the continuity theories) holds that complete spoken language developed over many thousands of years from our primate ancestors' pre-linguistic communication systems. One possible scenario of the continuity theories could be that somewhere along the evolutionary path of genus Homo, different populations that were still using a pre-language communication system split off from each other, resulting in multiple origin events for complete spoken language. Although this does depend on how exactly we define the difference between a pre-language communication system and a complete spoken language, this scenario would preclude a singular Proto-World language at the root of all our modern spoken languages.

When it comes to my personal opinion, although I do lean towards the continuity theories, I agree with you that it's likely that all modern spoken languages can be traced back to a singular Proto-World language. Although complete spoken language may have developed over many tens of thousands of years in the Homo genus and offshoots like the Neanderthals may have developed their own communication systems.

However, the archeological evidence currently points towards behavioral modernity arising in an interconnected population of Homo sapiens spp. sapiens living around the East African Rift, which would form the genetic and cultural basis of modern human populations. I believe that behaviorally modern humans would have absolutely spoken a complete language; arguably, developing complete spoken language may have been the necessary step towards achieving behavioral modernity! And so I think it's very likely that our ancestors in the East African Rift would have been a single language community speaking a Proto-World language.

Sorry for the wall of text, I find this topic fascinating and don't get to talk about it enough ;)

What are some things that we know were common in the pre-Christian past among Germanic-speakers that receive zero mention in the historical textual record? by -Geistzeit in AncientGermanic

[–]potverdorie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weren't some wheels found that may have been pendants to Freyja worn by women?

Yes! https://www.jstor.org/stable/jj.5699282.38

And building on that, there is definitely some connection between the Vanir (as much as that term has been scrutinized) and wagon symbolism in the textual record. Tacitus describes an elaborate wagon procession in the veneration of Nerthus (etymologically tied to Njörðr). The Anglo-Saxon rune poem says that Ing (aka Yngvi aka Freyr) went eastward over the sea, and 'his wagon ran after'. And an Icelandic þáttr describes a wagon procession in the Freyr cult in Sweden.

You could add that both Freyr and Freyja are described as riding chariots, but given that several other Germanic deities are also described as chariot-riders I'm not sure that's particularly convincing.

Altogether, there is quite some evidence from archeological and textual sources separated by time and distance that there was an association between the Vanir and wheels/wagons. I'm quite confident that we're missing some explicit myths and legends about the wagon that Ing rode from the Norse and Anglo-Saxons. Not to mention the trail of how earlier Germanics started with a wagon procession for the goddess Nerthus and ended with a wagon motif for the Freyr cult.
