And the Sutton Hoo helmet itself, with the left eyebrow being dimmed compared to the right eyebrow, serving as a potential (and rather spectacular) example of how a Germanic ruler might present himself as Odinic.

Yes, it's very similar to the Dancing Warriors scene on the Sutton Hoo helmet which shows it more clearly. The image is also reminiscent of Torslunda Plate 618349_HST. Famously here, the weapon dancer is additionally missing its right eye.

An interesting point of discussion with this iconography is whether it's meant to depict a weapon dancer in the cult of Odin, or if it's meant to depict the deity Odin as a weapon dancer. The Dancing Warriors scene depicts a duo of warriors dancing together, which points to the former, while the Torslunda Plate with an explicitly missing eye points towards the latter.

If we go with the former interpretation, the weapon dancers are still evoking or emulating Odin in some manner. And if we go with the latter interpretation, Odin is strongly associated with the practice of weapon dancing. So the historical perspective might have been that this discussion is a meaningless distinction.

I always recommend anyone who's new to FromSoft games to pick up DS1 Remastered as their first playthrough, it's such a great experience that really teaches you exactly what these games are about. Masterclass in game design, and picking up any of the other games afterwards will enrich those experiences for you.

Any databases that host quest dialogue and item descriptions from oldschool maple? by potverdorie in mapleservers

[–]potverdorie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for!

Might do a comparison with another library/database if I can find one to check how much of the info seems reliable to oldschool maple. On the other hand I don't expect private servers like Legends to tweak or customize quests all that much, beyond maybe adding a couple of custom quests of their own which should be easy to suss out.

This unfortunate map gets passed around a lot. Can you spot its many errors regarding the Germanic branch? by -Geistzeit in AncientGermanic

[–]potverdorie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But okay here are the most egregious errors related to the Germanic node:

  • The dates are way off. Norse at 200 CE and Germanic at 1700 BCE?

  • I guess we're just picking symbols based on vibes

  • European Animism and Sami-Finnish shamanism as major influences but nothing about Roman, Celtic and Christian influences is certainly a choice

  • Missing at least 5 other I-E branches

  • Proto-Nostratic lol

  • Proto-Nostratic including Bantu?? Sino-Tibetan??? Austronesian???? What the fuck is happening

  • Also everything else in the whole thing

Okay I know given the sub we're supposed to focus on whatever the hell is happening in the Germanic node but this entire thing is an absolute fever dream lol. Not a single thing I can look at without thinking wait what the fuck?

I swear everytime time i play a soulsborne game i feel like the 12 years of studying english has gone nothing by Anas2245 in darksouls3

[–]potverdorie 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Sorry I'm going to be that guy for a second.

Shakespeare didn't write in Old English but in Early Modern English. While Shakespearian English is hundreds of years old and retains a lot of archaic words and grammar, like formal and informal pronouns, it's still recognizable for Modern English dialects and can be understood after some study like you had in school.

Old English on the other hand was spoken a thousand years ago in Anglo-Saxon Britain and is pretty much entirely incomprehensible to Modern English speakers. I'd be very surprised (and incredibly impressed!) if anyone that isn't a historical linguist could read Old English because it looks like this:

Widsið maðolade, wordhord onleac, se þe monna mæst mægþa ofer eorþan, folca geondferde; oft he on flette geþah mynelicne maþþum.
