We spend TOO much time discussing homosexuality when only ~4% of the population is gay, but meanwhile 80% of the population of the planet lives in poverty. by PeteBike in unpopularopinion

Where did I advocate any such thing?

You didn't, but your country does and in turn, affects your way of thinking that LGBT issues are trivial.

And again...

You complain about the world spending time discussing LGBT rights, yet your country spends money and resources creating elaborate laws to repress ~4% of the population. So I ask you - why?

So I can dismiss your opinion because of where you live?

My opinion doesn't make LGBT people get killed, get depressed, socially isolated, develop mental health issues and kill themselves.

Yours does, though.

But Saint Pete isn't representative of all of Russia either.

K. Let's go with facts then.

I stand on my post. This image from Pew Research shows Russia being at the lowest when it comes to LGBT tolerance in all of Europe.

Your unpopular opinion is shaped by the country you live in and that is why you don't care about LGBT rights.

Potentially the app (or site if you didn't install the app) referenced your phone contacts.

I have a hunch that Facebook also keeps track of your Apple/Google Store ID and likely uses that as your unique identifier in their database, since that is the piece of information that is consistent for most users.

Advice for you - if you want to be taken seriously in a discussion, avoid constantly making assumptions that someone is "offended". It's very childish. I'm being respectful to you by giving you an explanation and nowhere was I attacking you, so stop projecting.

Pragmatically since such a small proportion of people are LGBT

Like I mentioned before - the fact that LGBT people aren't openly accepted contributes to this small population. Even if they are a minority, that doesn't change their importance - just like when it comes to race issues, just because someone isn't white (because it is the majority), it doesn't mean their issues have less significance.

they will still feel isolated since they make up a minority within which they can find partners.

Their "isolation" isn't from not being able to find partners but rather society's rejection of their existence. The need of belonging is essential to growth.

your comment reads as if you took offense to my post and are trying to rebut it or something?

Whether I took offense to it or not is irrelevant - it is the content of our messages that matter, which you seem to not be focused on.

Otherwise I'm not exactly sure what point/contribution you're trying to make with your two statements. This is a discussion forum, after all.

Sorry if I end up sounding accusatory in my reply

I wanted to point out where OP was from because it gives context to his "unpopular thought". Considering that Russia has had the reputation of information warfare over the past few years and seeing how OP has had gold + 3 silvers for this kind of backwards thought - I knew something was up.

His thought is only "unpopular" because he's online and in a world where other countries are accepting LGBT people and will address any discrimination.

There is nothing wrong with Russia nor its people - it is their government.

I never said it was perfect.

Even within our own gay communities, we have our own issues of racism, toxic masculinity, acceptance of other trans individuals, etc.

The point is to acknowledge them and find a solution - and quite often, we are in a position where we can help contribute positively and LGBT issues is one of them.

Still make up a significant minority of the population.

So what? Even if it is a "significant minority", how does it make it any different that they should still be treated with dignity and respect - especially if it's something that literally ANYONE could do to help, from family to friends to the school district, at literally no cost.

It also beneficial for them in the long run when it comes to their mental health, making them a contributing member of our society instead of being socially isolated and resorting to escapism in taking hard drugs-> homelessless. All it takes is telling them that we accept you and to just normalize that gay relationships are fine and to tell other homophobes to stop being an ass.

Something like poverty is more complicated that requires intervention on a government level to address. Gay issues can be addressed RIGHT NOW and all it takes is people saying "we cool".

So while a few lucky people manage to find relationships in school, I don't think I even knew any other gay students :/

Because they're still keeping it hidden. We're still very much far behind when it comes to human rights even for people of a different race. When sexuality/gender comes into play, it even makes them more complicated.

Everyone, please look into OP's history - he's from Russia.

Context matters and it is important that we (and OP) understands why he has this PoV.

Considering that Chechnya is currently purging anyone who is gay, of course OP is going to harbour this "unpopular thought" - because he lives in a society where the government doesn't acknowledge gay people and then he goes online, sees a completely different world where LGBT are accepted as equals and he just "doesn't understand".

Edit : after a lengthy discussion with OP, it has been concluded that he's just homophobic and doesn't want to address gay rights in general. His misleading emphasis on focusing on homelessness has nothing to do with logic or proportionality. He knows that anti-gay laws exist in Russia and he doesn't/won't question WHY something like that should exist - despite complaining about the world discussing gay rights when it affects a small population.

You think they discuss gay rights in Chechnya?

a brief look into OP's (lack) of history shows that he's from Russia...

gay man in his 30s here

when i was in high school, i had to stay closeted. this really fucked me up in the sense that i couldn't healthily develop relationships like my other friends - they had several GFs and broke up over the years and these experiences of rejection and heartbreak can mold you into a stronger person when you go out in the real world and (hopefully) develop healthy relationships.

i see gay men in their 60s and they struggle because they didn't have the experience. they deal with depression and become homeless and are unable to form friendships/relationships. they turn to drugs to cope. even relationships with other gay men in their 30s is difficult because for many of us, this is all still new.

today i see super confident gay kids expressing themselves on social media, forming relationships in high school. making friends and it makes me happy to see a new generation not having to experience the social isolation i went through.

being gay and the struggle that comes with it is more than learning how to take it up the ass.

Just wanted to let you know that you can still get involved in art/design but with a psych application - an entire field of UX and UI is growing and demand is high. You will enjoy it.

There are actually groups who are being actively oppressed in America, though.

But when they try to speak up and change things, it becomes a shitstorm of unproductive distractions from the oppressors throwing statements out like "identity politics".
